<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> NORTHMONT
Grade/position: Senior/QB
Scouting report: Big kid (6-foot-6, 225 pounds) with a rifle arm and 3.7 grade-point average. Wayne coach Jay Minton is not alone in calling him the best in Ohio. Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Duke, Kansas State and Miami University have offered scholarships. Several Big Ten schools are ready to pounce. Threw for 2,700 yards and 30 TDs as a junior, leading Northmont to the playoffs. Goal this year is to make bigger postseason dent. Credits QBs coach Mike Schneider for helping him learn to dissect defenses.
What's in your CD? "Hip-hop and R&B. Like it all."
Cell phone ring tone? Came with the phone. "Like a Jamaican tone, with bongos and things."
Brandon Saine
PIQUA
Grade/position: Senior/RB
Scouting report: Quiet off the field, the OSU-bound Saine is a monster on it. He's big (6-0, 215) and ultra fast (state record-holder in the 100 meters at 10.40 seconds). Some have wondered if he has the power to run up the middle — well, feel free to step up and test him. And in open field ... let's just say the coaches sometimes gasp to each other on the headset, "Did you just see that?" As nice a kid as you'll meet for someone who is the GWOC's offensive player of the year and state track champion.
What's in your CD? Boyz II Men, Evolution. "I just like the songs, the way they sing."
Cell phone ring tone? The Color of Love, Boyz II Men. "My friends think it's funny."
Favorite actress? Jessica Alba. "I like the movies she's in."
Carlton Peake
TROTWOOD-MADISON
Grade/position: Senior/RB-DB
Scouting report: Peake, a transfer from Meadowdale, is Scout.com's No. 1-ranked player in Ohio and the sixth-ranked safety nationally. With offers from Purdue, Michigan State, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pitt and Louisville, it's obvious Peake is coveted. He will play both running back (11 TDs last season) and DB (109 tackles, six INTs). Where he plays on Saturdays – and what position – has yet to be determined. Should the Rams reach the postseason, Peake could be the difference maker in a sustained run. He's that good.
What's in your CD? Nothing. "I don't have a CD player."
Cell phone ring tone? It's Going Down by Young Joc. "My ring tone was boring and I was trying to download some and came by that. I just put it down."
Chris Roark
ALTER
Grade/position: Senior/RB
Scouting report: At 5-10 and 180 pounds, Roark isn't a textbook running back but coach Ed Domsitz said his senior does have the desire. "He's smart, he's quick, he's experienced, he's strong." Domsitz said. "The only thing Chris Roark doesn't have is great size. He possesses everything else." The two-time All-GCL selection and third-year starter will be paired with junior speedster Michael Shaw in Alter's wishbone. The Knights will throw a little bit but will rely on the ground game. Roark said teams can't key on either he or Shaw.
Cell phone ring tone? Ice cream man. No, not the Van Halen song. "It's the tune that guy plays when he rides around. I like it."
Tyler Replogle
CENTERVILLE
Grade/position: Senior/LB
Scouting report: At 6-2 and 225 pounds, the Indiana-bound linebacker is a tackling machine. Centerville coach Ron Ullery said Replogle fits in with the Elks' all-time great LBs. He might not have the exact size and speed some scouts look for, but he's always around the ball, reads plays well and hammers ballcarriers. As a junior, he was defensive player of the year in the GWOC East.
Cell phone ring tone? "It's a straight-up ring, ring, ring. I don't care."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? History Channel. "There was just some marathons about World War II or something. And I watch a lot of ESPN."
Mitchell Evans
MILTON-UNION
Grade/position: Senior/QB-DB
Scouting report: Milton coach Bret Pearce summed it up when asked how he'd feel as a defensive coordinator facing Evans: "Helpless." Seeing the field, arm strength, athleticism and 4.49 speed in the 40-yard dash have helped Evans become one of the state's most sought QBs (1,990 yards, 20/5 TD/INT ratio). And he might be even better at DB (6 INTs). The 6-3, 200-pound Evans has D-I offers on both sides of the ball. He was a big reason for Milton's playoff run last season and has the offensive line, backfield, receviers and returning cast on defense to duplicate 2005.
What's in your CD? Nothing. "I don't listen to music really at all."
Cell phone ring tone? Original ring tone. "It's just the normal Cingular ring tone that comes with the phone."
SIX MORE GREAT PLAYERS TO WATCH
DONNIE EVEGE
School: Wayne
Grade/position: Senior/RB
Scouting report: Think speed. The 5-11, 193-pound Ohio State recruit is quick as a hiccup and, as Wayne coach Jay Minton puts it, "one of the best young men you could ever be around." Evege will be a workhorse RB while also making cameo appearances as a DB. Packed on about 10 pounds of muscle without losing a step. "I gained the weight to get faster," he says. "It's almost like the more I weigh, the faster I get." Chose OSU over Purdue, Miami University and Washington. Caused stir with midyear transfer from Xenia in sophomore year but has no regrets.
What's in your CD? Tupac. "He talks about real issues. A great artist."
Cell phone ring tone? "It's always on vibrate. I'm usually in places where it shouldn't be ringing, like practice or church."
Favorite actress? Salma Hayek. "She's very good, and very attractive."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? BET. "They've always got some music playing."
DREW FREY
School: Clinton-Massie
Grade/position: Senior/Slot
Scouting report: A lightning bolt in cleats (a legit 4.4 in the 40). One of the area's most feared RBs-WRs at 6-3, 195. Scored 24 TDs in '05. Will be used mainly as a slot this season, an occasional tailback, receiver, kicker, returner and DB. "My job is to get him the ball in the open spaces and give him as many touches as possible," said Falcons coach Dan McSurley. Said Waynesville coach Glen Burchfield: "It's simple — give him room and he'll go the distance. He's scary."
What's in your CD? Nelly. Splurge.
Cell phone ring tone? Young Jock, It's Going Down.
Favorite actress? Keira Knightley. "Pretty much her looks. She was easy to watch in Pirates of the Caribbean."
History channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? MTV.
JAFE PITCOCK
School: Piqua
Grade/position: Senior/DE
Scouting report: At 6-2 and 250 pounds he's not as big as brother Quinn (6-3, 295), but that's about the only difference between the two. Strong, fast and great at using his arms to shed blockers makes Pitcock tough to stop. Piqua coach Bill Nees can't recall an opposing lineman ever getting a holding call on Pitcock because he's elusive and doesn't stick in the same spot for long. A willingness to be coached makes Pitcock a dream. "He's so coachable it's unbelievable," Nees said. "He refuses to stop moving. He runs from snap to whistle. He believes every play is his to make."
What's in your CD? Downloaded mix, maybe. "I have no idea."
Cell phone ring tone? Super Mario Brothers. "I saw it and liked it."
Favorite actress? None. "I don't really have one."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? History Channel. "I'm into history. I like modern technology."
JEREMY SHRIEVES
School: Wayne
Grade/position: Senior/OT
Scouting report: Lived in the weight room in the offseason and went from 220 pounds to 255. Carries it well on 6-5 frame. Moving from right tackle to left tackle. "Seems pretty much the same," he says. "I don't view it as a big challenge." Known for pass protection. Also a solid drive blocker who can open holes in the run game. Has scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, Miami University and Cincinnati, but in no hurry to decide.
What's in your CD? "The Devil Wears Prada. A Christian metal band."
Cell phone ring tone? Generic. "It just rings. I'm not rich or high tech."
Favorite actress? Angelina Jolie. "Good features."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? BET. "The music gets me pretty krunk."
GENE STUDEBAKER
School: Covington
Grade/position: Senior/QB
Scouting report: A note to defensive players: Don't relax because Studebaker is contained. You still have to catch him. The converted RB enters his second season at QB as a multiple threat. He rushed for a single-season record 1,726 yards and threw for 809 last season. Poised to stay in the pocket, Studebaker has no problem scrambling — or sprinting — for yardage. At 6-2 and 200 pounds, he can carry a defender with his strong lower body or give a juke to make defenders miss.
What's in your CD? Punk. "I listen to a lot of different things but punk is my favorite."
Cell phone ring tone? Original ringtone. "It vibrates and rings. I don't know what it's called. It's what came with the phone."
Favorite actress? Jessica Biel. "Just the way she acts and does her thing."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? MTV. "I like the different types of shows on there."
DE WALLACE
School: Beavercreek
Grade/position: Senior/RB
Scouting report: Last season Wallace burst onto the scene with four TDs vs. Fairborn in Week 2 and 229 yards and two TDs against Troy the following Friday. Finished with a school-record 1,209 yards rushing and 17 TDs. A first-team All-GWOC pick, Wallace has big goals this season for the Beavers. With him in the backfield, Creek will enter Friday nights with better odds than they've had in the past.
What's in your CD? Mixed CD. "Rap all the time and rock a little."
Cell phone ring tone? Standard. "Just have the normal ring. Nothing fancy."
Favorite actress? Martin Lawrence. "Oh! Wait ... I don't have one."
History Channel or MTV/VH-1/BET? BET. "I like the music and the videos. No shows, just the music."

Chris Roark
ALTER
Grade/position: Senior/RB
Scouting report: At 5-10 and 180 pounds, Roark isn't a textbook running back but coach Ed Domsitz said his senior does have the desire. "He's smart, he's quick, he's experienced, he's strong." I went to the Alter/Fairmont game tonight, and Shaw is the better of the two IMO. He's about 5-11 (maybe taller) 185 and was a 10.6-10.7 guy in the 100M as a Sophomore. He's a strider, has great speed on the outside, and can be a punishing runner or an elusive one. He's got great vision. I was extremely impressed with him... Definitely one to keep an eye on for next year...

Edit: I'm told that Michael's best 100M time as a Soph. was 10.9 as opposed to what I stated above...

Agreed - Shaw was very impressive.
Fairmont coaching - not so much - although they did block an extra point with only 9 men on the field. I guess Alter hadn't practiced how to block only 9 guys!

Me and Shaw were in the same group at OSU camp at RB stations and talked a lot. The coaches were pretty impressed with him I believe and he did look good at camp. I think he is in the 5'10 to 5'11 range without shoes and weighs probably around 170 to 175. He has a good frame to put on some lbs. though.

I think he's bigger than that now RB... He looked to be a solid 185 or so (IMO). Had pretty good size arms, but still thin legs. He's not as tall as Robert Smith was, but he seems to be all legs and a glider like he was... I was really impressed with how tough he ran, hearing that he was a speed guy coming into the game...

He may have put on some weight since then since it was in June. But his official measurements from OSU were around 5-11 175. Either way he is one to watch this year.

Just PM stx, he can probably tell you for sure.

He looked about 175-ish to me, but he played bigger. He was definitely not afraid to take on a tackler and deliver the blow rather than receive it.

I also left with about 4 minutes to go, and didn't see if Holly Mangold got any plays in.
