Talk about a boring-ass game. This thing didn't get any good until they were down to the final out. And then... we get to see the NL NOT use the second-best hitter in the game with a chance to tie it up or win it. Thanks a lot, assholes. I'm glad I got to see Aaron Rowand with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

Tony LaRussa wasn't the only one mailing it in though... Pay-Rod apparently wore his cement boots to the game, botching a grounder when he tried to range to his right without moving his feet, and then getting thrown out by a mile on a play at the plate. Russell Martin could've pulled a scorecard out of his chest protector and marked Rodriguez out at the plate in the time he had to wait for him to arrive for the tag.

Wouldn't make a difference for those selfish "players".

Most of them don't honestly think they'll make the world series anyway because their teams don't have enough players like themselves on their team.

Actually, I like that all the teams are represented. It might not be the "best of the best" but if I want to see the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Dodgers, I'll just watch ESPN any night of the week. I agree with Griffey that expanding the roster to 40 makes sense. I think the significance of the game is to market players and the more involved, the better. It also gives them more of a chance to include some rookie stars and older vets as "reward" type guys who would really only play if the game went extras.

Despite the criticisms, baseball's all-star game comes much closer to real game level of competition than the NFL, NBA, or NHL.

I agree. The first 8 players on each team are voted in by fans. That means its a potential popularity contest. Then, you have the "every team must be represented" rule, which makes it so that some players who make it aren't better than other players who don't make it. Finally, whoever the all-stars for the last-place teams in each division (I have no idea who those teams are - I don't follow baseball very well) don't give a monkey's toaster oven who has home-field advantage. If those teams even make it to the playoffs, it would be a great feat. And, many times, even the managers of the two teams aren't even in a position to care about home-field advantage of the World Series.

I was always under the impression that the all-star game was for the fans. Let the fans vote in their players. I don't care if every team needs to be represented. But don't make the game "mean" anything, if the managers have their hands tied before the game even starts.
