Release: 08/23/2007

The 2007 women's cross country team comes into the season looking to continue to build on its successes. In 2006, the women's team won its first two meets of the season and also an individual win in two races.

The 2007 Buckeyes are looking to keep moving forward with the progress of the program. The women's team has its eyes set on the All-Ohio team title and is looking forward to hosting the 2007 Big Ten Championships Oct. 28.

"We are proud of the fact that our women's cross country team was the recipient of the 2007 highest team G.P.A. award here at Ohio State," head coach Karen Denis said. "We want to carry that same excellence to specific athletic goals for our distance group. We have recruited two of the best athletes from Ohio in Ellen Birmingham and Keesha Brooks to assist us in our efforts to win an All-Ohio Championship and to place in the Top 7 at the Big Ten Championships. We are going to continue to recruit strong student personnel to move our distance area to a more successful position within our conference and region."

No story on ohiostatebuckeyes.com yet but the women's team finished 11th at the Big Ten Championships. Their first runner finished after 7 entire teams (7 runners each) finished... they have a very young team and have a lot to look forward to next year.

Side note: The 3rd and 6th place finishers, both sophomores, are from Ohio but opted to go to Illinois and Penn State respectively. Ohio State needs to get a women's coach or assistant coach who is dedicated to help strengthen their distance program. The current cross country coach is their track coach and while I think she will do a good job there she comes from a sprint/jumps background.
