2007-2008 College Basketball Season Thread

Success in both the football and Basketball arenas dictate that there will be more upsets as parity and confidence grows in the smaller schools. This should be a very entertaining year in college basketball.
besides it gives us something to do until the football bowls .

College basketball roundup: Big East reprimands UConn's Calhoun

Saturday, December 8, 2007 3:09 AM

From staff and wire reports

Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun was reprimanded by the Big East yesterday for comments he made about the officiating after a 69-60 win over Northeastern a day earlier.
Conference policy prohibits such comments, Big East commissioner Michael Tranghese said. Calhoun apologized in a written statement yesterday, agreeing the comments were inappropriate.
Calhoun received two technical fouls during the game and was ejected.
One of Calhoun's technical fouls came after official Wally Rutecki heard the coach use profanity to address his players. Calhoun called Rutecki "a bad official" and "incompetent" during postgame media discussions.

Hell of a day in college hoops today. Dayton knocks off Louisville. Brian Roberts is the best college hoops player in Ohio. Indiana smoked UK. I wonder if the blue necks are sorry Tubby is gone? Butler lost a tough game to Wright State 43-42. Each team scored 15 points in the second half. Butler is still a fine basketball squad and the committee won't look at that as a bad loss come March.

Ohio's Kenneth van Kempen, left, knocks the ball away from Kansas' Brandon Rush.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Brandon Rush had three good reasons to be pumped.
Kansas' all-Big 12 guard was making his first start of the season, signaling a successful recovery from knee surgery that kept him out of the NBA draft.
His team was making its first appearance in a new arena. And this was all happening about five minutes from the neighborhood where he grew up.
"I was motivated," Rush said with a big smile.

Memphis vs. Georgetown is next week from the FedEx Forum. Early season game of the year in my opinion. Tough to tell who will win. Georgetown doesn't have a football team so that knocks them down but they do play in a BCS conference so that's a plus. Memphis plays in CUSA which has never had a team make it past the first weekend of the tourney so that will hurt them. Memphis only has a 6'8 center in Joey Dorsey which means they have no size and will get killed in the NCAA's. Hibbert is taller so that means victory is guaranteed. Playing in a BCS conference and having a taller center means the Hoyas will win.

P'Allen Stinnett of Creighton, Chris Wright of Dayton, Armon Johnson of Nevada, Austin Daye of Gonzaga, and Derrick Rose of Memphis are the five best non BCS frosh I've seen this season.

College basketball roundup: Lawson leads Tar Heels to win

Monday, December 17, 2007 2:56 AM

Associated Press

No. 1 North Carolina 93, Rutgers 71-- Ty Lawson scored a career-high 26 points, Tyler Hansbrough had 20 points and 11 rebounds before leaving with an injury, and North Carolina beat Rutgers last night in Piscataway, N.J.
The Tar Heels (9-0) are off to their best start since the 1997-98 season when they won their first 17 games on the way to the Final Four.
Hansbrough, the preseason national player of the year, tried to take a charge from Earl Pettis with 5:47 to play. Hansbrough went to the floor in a sitting position and hit the back of his head against the bottom of the basket support. He stayed on the floor for a couple of minutes before being helped up by coach Roy Williams and the team's trainer. Hansbrough was taken to a hospital for precautionary measures.
