2006 Spring Game info/discussion

Spring game is now up! Link in the sig as always. 1.37 GB DIVX. Mili, I know you asked for a DVD but I actually don't have a DVD burner, which is why I make the DIVX files in the first place. But, because of that I can also make clips myself. I'll upload those clips when I get some time tomorrow or later tonight.

Good deal! Looking forward to the clips...

Nick Mangold organized the Senior Signing and coordinated making sure all the seniors were there. Don't know why you didn't get Bobby's sig -- he was there. Nick sounded disappointed that AJ went to the ND spring game with Laura, especially since AJ had confirmed he would be at the OSU game for the signing.

Sounds like somebody is a little whipped ... :p

What time was Bobby there? We were there from about 10:45-11:15 and he wasn't there during that time. I figured he was with some NFL team. Was really disappointed that AJ wasn't there, especially since he was at ND's game.

I got Bobby's autograph! He & A.Schlegel even posed for a picture for me1 They both talked to us for about 5 minutes, they were not real busy at that moment.I think it was around 9:00! I got the picture & my Fiesta Bowl hat signed! I did go back with my football for $10 & Bobby was not there then! I'll send you the picture of Bobby & Schlegel via email on Tuesday!
Good fun, just got back on Monday! Nice meeting you Joe,Todzilla & the rest of the crew!

I just now got to watch the game and here are my thoughts:
QB- Troy Smith is just a stud. Zwick can't throw the deep ball but looked ok throwing short to midrange passes. Boeckman impressed me on some throws and has more arm strength than I thought. Shoenhoft has a gun and was impressive towards the end. If I had to give the edge to anyone based on JT style, it would be Shoenhoft, since he made better decisions overall.
RB- Erik Haw played pretty well and he should get some carries this year. Maurice Wells wasn't all that impressive and still looks a bit tentative to me, but I did see some improvement. Beanie Wells is a beast as advertised and was the most impressive RB at the game imo. Great pad level, leg drive, power, great burst, and I loved how he used his hand to balance himself. He will be a good one.
WR- I am excited here. Ginn and Gonzalez are stars, but many others showed up to play. Roy Hall looked really impressive and is the #3 WR in my books. Brian Hartline is going to be good and just gets open. I would say he gets some PT this year and I have him at #4. Albert Dukes showed some flashes and some wheels, so I would have him at #5, slightly ahead of Brian Robiskie, who looked pretty good as well. 4,5, and 6 are probably interchangable really.
TE- I saw some real movement here. Nicol looked great and it looks like we will utilize him this year. Marcel Frost is a good athlete but needs to be more consistent catching the ball. Overall I was very pleased at TE.
OL- Not real impressed here but it was alot of patchwork on the line. Boone needs some work on passing blocking but did well run blocking. Whaley didn't impress me. I saw him consistently losing ground right off the snap. Cordle looks much better at center imo. Kyle Mitchum was a guy that stood out to me as someone who should get some PT this fall. Josh Kerr was pretty unimpressive though.
DE- Amazing improvement here. Jay Richardson is an absolute beast and looks like he could be all Big Ten this year. Vernon Gholston also looked very good and is the other starting DE in my books. Lawrence Wilson didn't look all that bad and will rotate in. If Worthington and Wilson aren't healthy though, I could see Rose coming in and playing.
DT- Good improvement here as well. Pitcock is already a stud but Joel Penton impressed me. Nader Abdallah shows flashes but needs to get more consistent. Todd Denlinger should rotate in at DT and looked like a beast. Didn't see much from Patterson but he should be the other starter to Pitcock.
LB- Saw some good things here. Freeman was pretty consistent. Ross Homan is a great player and I think he gets lots of PT this year. Lauranaitis impressed me and I see him at the other starting spot right now. Kerr really didn't stand out to me and I personally like Hoobler better. Hoobler was great in pass coverage and was around the ball alot. I say at least play Hoobler some in the middle against passing teams. Didn't see a whole lot from Larry Grant or Curtis Terry.
DB- Malcolm Jenkins is the next great CB here. A solid player all around. Amos didn't look all that bad and neither did Antonio Smith. Anderson Russel flys to the ball well and Brandon Mitchell impressed me as well. Jamario O'Neal looked pretty good as well. I personally like Mitchell over Patterson from what I have seen, though Patterson showed some flashes. I'm very high on Kurt Coleman and think he is a perfect nickel player and on special teams. He will contribute this year for sure. Donald Washington looked great on special teams and not bad on defense. Overall, I liked the potential I saw.
K- Pettrey has an amazing leg. Didn't get to see Pretorious much.
P- Is it amazing how many great punters and kickers we get? Well Trapasso is another special player as Tressel would say.
In Summary- We are going to be dominant offensively, especially if Pittman is healthy. We can run and throw at will. I'm not too concerned about the line and I think they will come together. Great leaders in Smith, Ginn, Pittman, Hartline, and Gonzalez. On defense it looks as if we didn't lose a step speed-wise. We have some guys that have played and the leadership is going to have to take effect. I think Jenkins, Lauranaitis, Mitchell, and Pitcock are all great leaders and they are going to have to exemplify that. From what I saw, we have a very real shot at a NC game this year if the leadership is there like in 02' on both sides.

Just to clarify the fumble issue: 1) JamO fumbled on a kickoff return, not a punt return (they weren't allowed to return punts, for starters, and this fumble occurred on the kickoff after the safety). 2) Dukes fumbled right near the sideline, and this was all Kurt Coleman-great ball awareness and went for the strip. 3) Boeckman fumbled when he was sacked by Homan on 4th down, but the play was blown dead. Homan definitely was about to pounce on it though. 4) Hartline fumbled after his catch, but at first it was tough to tell whether he took steps or made an athletic move. He was kind of just falling to the ground and trying to stay up and then the ball was out. The ball couldn't have been in his hands for more than a second.

Had a great time at the Spring game...even if I did pick Scarlet to win...I was able to get 2 football autographed by all Seniors except Hawk and Carpenter, my intentions are to donate the footballs to a children's home for their benefit auction...does anyone have any ideas or connections as to how i might get Hawk & Carpenter to autograph the footballs...Also had dinner Saturday night at Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe...was walking thru the Walk of Fame, when a distinguished gentleman came from the opposite direction...It was Coach Earle Bruce...we shook hands and talked briefly and Coach graciosly consented to a picture being taken of Coach, my cousin, and myself...what a Great Guy...:osu2:

My take on the future QB situation

I will bet anyone that Boeckman will be the next starting QB for our Bucks. He was not spectacular, but looked MUCH better than Robby. Robby was all over the place. He has zero touch on the ball, and only hits his receivers when given tons of time. He forces the ball, and had three balls batted down. Boeckman's arm is not as strong, but he seems to "always find the open man" as Tressel once said about him. Boeckman looks like a Krenzel type of QB to me. Boeckman looks like he could be a year away, and Robby looks more like two or more.

both showed potential... boeckman was a better passer, schoenhoft showed great mobility again. Neither convinced me that henton will not have a shot if he can grow up in a hurry, and mature despite being #5 on the depth chart.

While I can't disagree with what you said, we have to remember this is only a spring game. Anything that happens has to be taken with a grain of salt. The thing I like about Robby over Boeckman is his mobility. That and he has a cannon for an arm. Both of these guys still have another full season and another spring of practice before we have to name a starter for '07...and remember young Mr. Henton who came on board this winter. No need to jump too far ahead, we have a great fall coming up. I think we can all agree the future of Buckeye football is as bright as ever.

Troy will spoil everyone this season. He is the best QB the big ten has had in a while. That being said, Robby was unbelievably wild with his arm. He sprayed the ball all over the field on Saturday. The only reason that I bring this up is because many people think that Robby had a better game, and I can't seem to understand what game they were watching. People seem to be enamoured by Robby's strong arm and mobility, is if these attributes alone make a great QB. My Saint X relatives always said he was a bit of a "wildthing" athlete, but not a true QB, because he makes poor decisions. I am SO excited for next year and not trying to be negative, but cannot ignore what I see.
