Defending national champion Michigan swept a doubleheader from the Ohio State softball team yesterday at Buckeye Field.
Michigan (30-11, 8-2) rallied in the opening game for a 3-2 victory and cruised to a 6-1 win in the second game.
Ohio State (30-17, 8-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first game when Brittany Vanderink scored on a passed ball in the first inning and then tied the score at 2 in the fifth on Christina Douglas’ home run.
Alessandra Giampaolo’s oneout RBI single in the seventh off OSU starter Kim Reeder (13-7) scored the winning run. It was the first Big Ten loss of the season for Reeder after four wins.
Jennie Ritter pitched a complete game for the win.
OSU lost the nightcap despite outhitting the Wolverines 10-6.
Michigan scored four times in the bottom of the second inning before the Buckeyes countered with their lone run in the top of the third. Ohio State squandered a chance for more runs in the inning when Ritter, who relieved starter Lorilyn Wilson, struck out three hitters with the bases loaded.
Ritter (18-5) pitched five innings of three-hit ball to post her second win of the day.
Jamee Juarez (13-7) suffered the loss for OSU. The series concludes today at noon.

Kalafatis Wins No. 600 as Juarez, Ohio State Shut Out Michigan State, 4-0, in Game Two

Juarez hurls 17th career shutout, Koyano hits fifth home run as Buckeyes sweep Spartans

April 23, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State head coach Linda Kalafatis won her 600th career game and junior Jamee Juarez pitched her 17th career shutout as the OSU softball team blanked Michigan State, 4-0, Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. After winning game one, 13-4, the Buckeyes (33-17, 10-4 Big Ten) take over sole possession of third place in the Big Ten and sweep Michigan State (32-18, 8-6 Big Ten) for the first time since 2002.

Kalafatis is now 600-341-2 in her 18th season as a collegiate head coach and is already Ohio State's all-time wins leader with a 327-226-0 record in her 10th season in Columbus. Her 599th and 600th wins helped erase a pair of losses to No. 12 Michigan yesterday.

"We told the team how proud we were of them for bouncing back from the two losses yesterday against Michigan," Kalafatis said. "These were critical games and we have a lot of respect for Michigan State. We started a little slow today, but the girls picked it up. Brittany Vanderink had a great weekend and as a sophomore is showing that she is going to be a big star in this program. Jamee Juarez also pitched her best Big Ten game today."

In her 47th career complete game, Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) allowed only two base runners through the first four innings. She scattered six hits and struck out five to improve to 14-9. Her 17 career shutouts are tied for third-most in Ohio State history with Genice Turley (1994-95).

OSU junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) hit a two-out, solo home run in the third inning, her second of the day, to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. It marked Koyano's third home run in her last six games. Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled up the middle to lead off the fourth inning and later scored on a Spartan error to put the Buckeyes up, 2-0.

Junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) led off the top of the seventh inning with a double and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Koyano. Sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) then reached on a fielder's choice, stole her 14th base of the season and scored on a single through the left side by Schwab.

Junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) went 2-for-3 and Schwab went 2-for-4.

Vanderink's 8-for-15 weekend upped her Big Ten average to a team-best .435.

Ohio State hosts Wright State Wednesday in a doubleheader at 5 p.m.

Ohio State Gets by Wright State, 3-2, in Game Two

Juarez strikes out 10 in 13th complete game; Schwab delivers game-winning RBI in seventh inning

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Seniors Chelsea Baker and Stacy Hibma hit home runs in the second inning and junior Megan Schwab delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh as the Ohio State softball team pulled out a 3-2 win over Wright State Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Along with a 10-2 win in game-one, the Buckeyes (34-17, 10-4 Big Ten) improve to 19-2 at home this season.

Wright State (6-31, 6-7 Horizon) tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, but in the seventh Ohio State loaded the bases with two hits and a walk and Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) sent a line drive to the wall in left field to end the game.

"We got the two wins but we had some set some goals to accomplish tonight that we didn't achieve," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. "In the end, the girls executed and moved runners, but that second game could have turned out differently."

The home runs for Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) and Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) were the 14th and 10th, respectively, of their careers and helped send Ohio State on its way to an 11-0 record in non-conference home games this season, upping OSU's record in that department to 94-10 under Kalafatis.

OSU junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) struck out 10, walked none, and scattered six hits to improve to 15-9 this season. The game marked her 13th complete game of the season and 48th of her career and she notched double-digit strikeouts for the fifth time in 2006.

Senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) led off the seventh inning with a single down the left field line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hibma. Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) then walked and sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) collected an infield single to the hole between shortstop and third to load the bases. Schwab then stepped to the plate and gave the Buckeyes their second walk-off win of the season (Baker's home run to beat Northwestern April 9).

With a 1-for-3 performance in game-one and a 2-for-4 effort in game-two, Vanderink is now hitting .500 (11-for-22) in her last six games.

Ohio State will play four Big Ten road games this weekend beginning with a 6 p.m. single game Friday at Iowa.

Ohio State Comes Back for 10-6 Win at Wisconsin

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a two hour rain delay, the Ohio State softball team fell behind 5-1 at Wisconsin Sunday, but the Buckeyes scored two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and two more in the seventh for a 10-6 win at Goodman Softball Complex in Madison, Wis. In what was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, the teams played just one game Sunday because of the weather conditions, with Ohio State winning for the first time in its last six games in Madison.

With the win, Ohio State (35-18, 11-5 Big Ten) moves back into sole possession of third place in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin (21-21, 5-10 Big Ten) remains on the outside looking in at the Big Ten tournament, which begins May 11.

"We were up against some adverse conditions, because of both the weather and from some big hits early by Wisconsin," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. "I give our kids credit for staying grounded and battling and coming back for a win we really needed."

The Buckeyes pounded out 14 hits, their most in a Big Ten games this season, to keep their status as the league's best offense with a .286 average overall and a .318 average in conference games. Ohio State ends the month with a 19-5 record in April, a month in which it hit .333 as a team compared to .216 in March.

Coming off a rainout at Iowa Saturday, Kalafatis had a fresh pitching staff at her disposal and would need it to get past the Badgers. Junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) started and pitched into the second inning, freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) then took over and pitched into the fourth and freshman Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) worked a total of 4.0 innings, allowing just one run, to earn the win and improve to 15-8. At the plate, Reeder collected her first collegiate hit and RBI and her 15 wins are just one shy of the OSU record for wins by a freshman, held by OSU assistant coach Kristi DeVries, who had 16 2001.

In the second inning, Wisconsin's Alexis Garcia hit a two-run homer off Juarez, then Athena Vasquez hit a three-run homer off Pruner to put the Badgers up 5-1. Wisconsin would have just four hits the rest of the way, however, as Ohio State mounted its comeback effort.

Against Iowa Friday, the Nos. 4 through 9 spots in the OSU order went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, but Sunday the same group accounted for nine RBI, all of which helped the Buckeyes battle back.

Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead when she hit an RBI single in the first inning to score junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut), who had led off the game with a double. In the fourth inning, RBI singles came from junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) and senior Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian). Then in their five-run fifth inning, the Buckeyes got RBI from senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales), Juarez and Douglas and scored two more runs on opportunistic base running, first on a Badger throw and the other on a wild pitch.

Leading 8-6 going into the seventh inning, OSU tacked on two more runs on a RBI ground-out by Juarez and a RBI single by Reeder, the first of her career.

Four Buckeyes had two hits each, including Koyano, sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) and Baker, while Juarez and Douglas both drove in two runs. For Juarez, it was her eighth multiple-RBI game of the season, tying her with Pruner for the team lead.

Ohio State hosts Oakland in a non-conference doubleheader at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Buckeye Field in OSU's final home games of the season.

Ohio State's Vanderink Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Sophomore hit .600 last week and upped Big Ten average to league-best .481

May 1, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a weekend in which she upped her batting average in league games to a Big Ten-best .481, Ohio State sophomore Brittany Vanderink was named the conference's softball Player of the Week Monday. Vanderink went 9-for-15 overall in OSU's four games last week, including a 6-for-8 performance in two Big Ten road games.

Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood H.S.) extended her career-best hitting streak to eight games last week and helped lead the Buckeyes (35-18, 11-5 Big Ten) to three wins in four games. During her current hitting streak, Vanderink is hitting .567 (17-for-30) and has vaulted to the top spot in batting average in Big Ten games only and to No. 10 overall average at .336.

Vanderink, the 2004 Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year, went 3-for-7 in a doubleheader vs. Wright State Wednesday before going 4-for-4 at Iowa Friday and 2-for-4 at Wisconsin Sunday. The second games of both series were rained out. Vanderink, whose four hits against the Hawkeyes were a career best, added three runs scored, a RBI and two stolen bases last week and played errorless defense in right field.

The player of the week honor is the first for Vanderink, who joins teammates Stacy Hibma (Sr., Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) Feb. 14 and Megan Schwab (Jr., Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) April 10 as Buckeyes to earn conference weekly honors this year.

In its final week of the regular season, Ohio State hosts Oakland at 5 p.m. Wednesday before traveling to Penn State for single games at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Ohio State Makes Quick Work of Oakland, 8-0, in Game Two

Buckeyes set school record with 26th-consecutive game without being shutout

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Scoring at least one run for a school-record 26th-consecutive game, the Ohio State softball team needed only an hour and one minute to finish off Oakland, 8-0, in five innings Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Junior Jamee Juarez threw her 18th-career shutout and allowed only one hit as the Buckeyes (37-18, 11-5 Big Ten) put the wraps on back-to-back undefeated home non-conference seasons, finishing the 2006 campaign 13-0 at Buckeye Field against non-Big Ten teams and 19-2 overall.

Oakland (25-26, 11-9 Mid-Continent Conference) mustered just one hit against Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson), who improves to 16-9 this season with five shutouts. The outing marked her 14th complete game of the season and the 49th of her career, which now included five one-hitters. She struck out 10 Grizzlies for her sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.

In its final home games of the season, Ohio State improved to 96-10 in non-conference games at Buckeye Field under 10th-year head coach Linda Kalafatis.

"We haven't always come out with the intensity you need in these midweek games, but our girls were fired up tonight," Kalafatis said. "We can't win the Big Ten so we have set some new goals and the kids are responding. We haven't performed well in the circle or in the field the last few weeks, but we did tonight and that will be the difference for us down the stretch."

For OSU seniors Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales), Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina), Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) and Nicole Lancaster (Magnolia, Ohio/Sandy Valley), it was their final game at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes were 7-0 in non-conference home games last year and together with this season have registered the only two such perfect non-Big Ten home seasons in program history.

The Buckeyes scored three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and four in the fifth for the mercy rule win, marking OSU's quickest game since game durations were first kept in 1998. The previous shortest game in OSU records was a 10-0 win over Ohio, April 11, 1998, that took 1:13.

Ohio State sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), the current Big Ten Player of the Week, went 3-for-3 to extend her career-best hitting streak to 10 games, during which time she is hitting .600 (21-for-35).

Juarez also went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, upping her average to .458 (11-for-24) in her last eight games. Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) also hit a double, keeping herself and Juarez tied for the team lead in doubles with 11 each. Carder and junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) also doubled.

Carder, hitting .375 (15-for-40) in her last 13 games, totaled three RBI in the doubleheader to take over the team lead in that department with 34.

Ohio State will wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend with single games at Penn State at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

No. 4 Seed Ohio State Ousts No. 5 Seed Penn State, 9-6

Buckeyes score in first five innings, advance to semifinals vs. No. 1 Northwestern

May 12, 2006
EVANSTON, Ill. - After being shut out at Penn State last Sunday in its regular-season finale, the No. 4 seed Ohio State softball team returned the favor with a 9-6 win over the No. 5 seed Nittany Lions Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament, hosted by league champion Northwestern. Ohio State (38-20, 11-7 Big Ten) scored in each of the first five innings and advances to play No. 1 seed and 12th-ranked Northwestern in a semifinal game at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, with the championship game beginning at 2 p.m.

Penn State (37-15, 10-10 Big Ten) carried the nation's 10th-ranked pitching staff (1.15 ERA) into the game, but Ohio State collected 10 hits, including a homer and two triples, to erase the memories of getting swept in University Park, Pa., by the Nittany Lions last weekend.

"We challenged the top of our lineup to produce and they did," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. "We were able to execute our bunts and also found some gaps. We felt like we didn't swing our bats the way we are capable of last weekend at Penn State, so it was nice to start the tournament hitting so well. We got back to playing Ohio State softball."

These two teams combined for a total of seven runs in their two games last weekend but had scored that many runs by the end of the third inning Friday. OSU sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) went 3-for-5 with a two-RBI triple and scored three runs, junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) drove in two runs for her team-leading 10th multiple-RBI game of the season and senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) hit her team-leading eighth home run of the year which gave OSU the lead for good.

The Nittany Lions entered the game 27-1 when scoring first and put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but the Buckeyes never trailed again for put give Penn State loss No. 2 in that department. In addition, the Lions were 14-3 in neutral site games coming into the game, while Ohio State improves to 7-9 in that department. Meeting for the third time in the last seven days, the Buckeyes improve to 2-1 all-time against Penn State in the Big Ten tournament.

Vanderink, who was named first-team All-Big Ten Thursday, extended her career-best hitting streak to 13 games, during which time she is hitting .553 (26-for-47). The 13-game hitting streak is fourth-best at Ohio State since 1998.

Penn State's Ashley Esparza put the Nittany Lions up early with a two-run homer in the top of the first, but the Buckeyes knotted the score at 2-2 in their first at bat. Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) led off with a single to left field and Vanderink followed with a single through the left side. The two moved up on a grounder to third by junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) and then scored on an RBI groundout by Juarez and a single through the left side by freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet). A walk to Baker reloaded the bases with two out but PSU starter Jenn Reynolds was able to induce a ground out by junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson).

Reynolds shut out Ohio State last Sunday, snapping the Buckeyes' school-record 28-game scoring streak, but was chased from the game in the second inning when a two-out RBI single up the middle by Juarez brought home Vanderink, who had singled, giving OSU a 3-2 lead. Reliever Missy Beseres, PSU's all-time wins leader, came on to get the third out and would pitch into the fifth before the Buckeyes would bounce her from the game, too.

A RBI double by Penn State's Danielle Kinley knotted the game at 3-3 in the third, which prompted Kalafatis to bring Pruner into the circle in relief of Juarez. Pruner worked into the fifth for a total of 2.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts to earn the win, improving to 6-1 this season.

Baker's solo homer in the third inning, which put OSU up 4-3, was her team-leading eighth homer of the season and the 15th of her career, giving her sole possession of fourth place in the OSU record book.

The Buckeyes tacked on two more in the fourth on a RBI triple by Schwab and a squeeze bunt by senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina).

Penn State brought its deficit back to one run at 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning when Hollee Haines knocked a two-RBI double off Pruner. Kalafatis then went back to her bull pen and brought on freshman Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.), who would finish out the game for her first collegiate save.

Leading 6-5 heading into the fifth, Vanderink knocked her two-run triple and then scored on a groundout by Schwab for OSU's ninth run.
