It's that time again...one more thread for the masses to sift through to find out if Damon McDaniel has come out of hiding yet. The OSURFC kicked off it's Spring 2006 season this past weekend with a solid opponent:

#5 Ohio State @ North Carolina

Despite not having a formal practice yet (just conditioning to this point) and missing three senior starters due to injuries, we were able to dispose of the UNC, 33-19.

Here is the early 2006 schedule (RugbyBuck, take note of 3/18 and 3/25):

We will most likely be scheduling a few more games, most likely at home, on some of our open dates. Josh, I will let you know well in advance if/when we get a home match on the calendar this Spring. Everything we do now leads up to the big weekend, 4/21-4/23 at West Point for our Sweet 16 match in the national tournament against #7 Dartmouth

Write-up of the game:

Ohio State Shakes Off Rust, Beats North Carolina

January 29, 2006, Chapel Hill, NC — The University of North Carolina Tar Heels welcomed the #7 Ohio State Buckeyes over the weekend in a season opener for the hosts, and a mid-winter rugby oasis for the visitors.

"This is our opening day and we are putting out our first-side XV from this point on," said head coach Mike Folan. Our schedule is difficult both in conference and out of conference and it starts this weekend.

Looking for a full 80 minutes and a better scoreline than last fall's 41-20 loss, the Tarheels got a bit of both, but also suffered a loss as both teams weaved their way through fairly shaky performances.

UNC's Alastair McKeever kicked two early penalties to put UNC up 6-0.

"OSU was the rustier of the two squads," said Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney. "We opened the game with four penalties in less than three minutes."

But OSU picked it up, kicking two goals of their own to tie it up, and then opening up a lead as some good support work on a quick tap saw the ball out wife to Nick Bell on the left wing.

From the restart UNC attacked well, thanks to a well-taken catch on the run from flanker William Hayles, using both forwards and backs, and looked to have their tails up. But freshman center Tony Dieppa intercepted a pass between the centers and sauntered in for the try. A makeable conversion was missed, so that left the score at 16-6.

That was a tough one for the Tarheels to come back from, but they tried. Again multiple phase work went for naught as OSU turned the ball over and headed downfield, eventually jamming the ball over thanks to No. 8 Brandon Jewett.

Another try near the end of the half put the game away for OSU at 30-6.

Ohio State opened the second half as they had the first, committing a lot of penalties and causing some teeth-grinding on the sidelines. North Carolina capitalized with two McKeaver penalties before some excellent runs from forwards Chris Campbell and Mike Burrows allowed flanker Eric Martin to score a deserved try.

Rooney was relatively pleased with the effort, if only because his side got to go outdoors and play a game. They won't play again for three weeks.
The teams have begun a relationship to help the other warm up for league or playoff play. It doesn't hurt that the aforementioned Mike Burrows is the son of old-time OSU rugby alum Ken Burrows, who was club president in 1970.

"The object was for both squads to get their feet wet early and it served its purpose, I think, for both teams," said Rooney. "UNC came to us in the fall on their fall break and helped us get ready for our playoffs and we returned the favor. We hope to keep it going in years to come. Most important of all, we got to play. Many of the skills were rusty, especially lineouts, but we got outside. That was huge."

4 penalties in the first 3 minutes...if that isn't our M.O...:shake:

Two of our guest coaches from the Fall were named to the '06 Eagles pool...

USA Rugby names 2006 player pool

Boulder, CO – (January 31, 2006) – Fifty players have been named to the 2006 National Team player pool, the first big step toward the summertime international season.

Nine backs and six forwards are new to the pool, while a total of 18 players are uncapped. Overall, there are 25 backs and 25 forwards, led by flanker and captain Kort Schubert. Half the group have previously been Collegiate All-Americans, evidence of the program’s pivotal role in the development of elite players as well as the overall importance of university-level rugby.

Player pool selections are based on consistent performance in America’s leading club and college competitions, the National All-Star Championship, and the Collegiate All-American and Eagle 7s programs. The 2005 international season also weighed in the coaching staff’s decision making.

“The 2006 National Team Player Pool looks to be stronger than the preseason group we named the past two years. We anticipate healthy competition for roster spots this summer, particularly with the World Cup qualifiers at hand,” USA head coach Tom Billups said in naming the pool.

Notwithstanding, newcomers could play their way into the pool based on springtime 15s competitions, including the new North American Series with Canada, Billups said. NAS players will be announced later in the spring. Slightly larger than the 2005 pool, this year’s group will be on call for the three-week Churchill Cup in June and Rugby World Cup qualifiers in July and August.

As for the Spring, we are heavy on starting experience. And because of the scores last Fall, many young guys got valuable A-side experience. The name of the game for us is the same as it always is: injuries and penalties. If we can cut down on those two key areas, we have the players and game plan in place to be a force come nationals. We hae a tough draw at West Point...Dartmouth, followed likely by Penn State, the only team to beat us last Fall (first game of the season, we were missing our top 3 players, but they were missing their all-everything flyhalf). The trip to Charlotte in a few weeks to face Kutztown and Navy will tell us a lot about where we are. But the kids have been working hard this off-season, and we will come out ready and fit.

As for next Fall, we have been more active on the recruiting front than ever. We are looking at kids from everywhere from California, to Iowa, to Ohio, to overseas. With the large number of outgoing seniors after the Spring, we are looking to bring in a deep and talented class next Fall.

Any details on the DC tourney? You could alert the DC Alumni club and get them to come out for your game. I'm headed to Baltimore this month to catch the LAX team play, and would happily support the Rugby team in DC in April.

DC Alumni Club web site:

:oh: :io:

thanks for the link...we work closely with both the office of alumni relations and with the office of sponsorship and stewardship. I imagine there will be some sort of gathering down in DC, but I will look into it to make sure we are getting the DC alumni involved.

Man I'll be in Hawai'i during the team's trip to GA or I'd go shoot it for you! You guys need to recruit some sole's (Samoans). Go to New Zealand etc and find a Jonah Lomu! All Black Baby!

most of our foreign talent comes from either Zimbabwe or South Africa...but I would love to land a Kiwi or two...maybe Jonah Lomu and Richie McCaw. I'm sure they have college eligibility left!

While certainly the odd foreign player who has played since he was five is great to have, how many are we realistically going to bring to Columbus? It's one thing to build a program with Islander talent if you're in CA, another if you're in OH. There are hs seniors every year in Columbus who are good athletes and could be made into fine rugby players if caught early enough. Surely, there are guys who could play DII or III football but go to tOSU instead. I had small school offers, but went to UGA for the degree and in-state name (not the best decision, but that's another story for another time). Identifying those kids early and making them aware of the opportunity to learn and play could be huge.

We have really focused on strengthening Ohio high school rugby. We created the Ohio Rugby Coaches Association and have started offering clinics and seminars to the local coaches. Westerville is already a strong program, but we have also worked with Lakewood, Parma, Worthington and a few others to cultivate the talent in Ohio. We are ahead of the game in that respect...

Now like RB said...the odd foreigner here or there doesn't hurt...

wadc, Rugby, I agree with you. It is best to build high school rugby. Also, there are a lot of potential front-liners playing high school football but not offered at university level because they are too short, etc.

My point about South Africans is that, as you know, there are a lot of them around the midwest. The midwest feels culturally like the inland regions of South Africa and many aspire to a US education. The other thing about South Africans is that they stay in contact. So, my guess is that Ryan Pretorius will be able to tell you where a few good South Africans might be found who are already in the US or about to come.

Nevertheless, if you can build the game at high school level, you will do the best thing for Ohio State and US rugby.:osu:

great points all the way around...

This weekend in Charlotte, NC:

Saturday - #4 Ohio State vs. Kutztown
Sunday - #4 Ohio State vs. #10 Navy

Kutztown is a dangerous team that is always knocking on the doorstep of the top 25...and always looking to knock off a giant such as OSU. Navy's ranking and record are incredibly deceiving...they are 5-3 with their losses coming last Fall at the hands of Brixham RFC of England, #3 Penn State and #1 Army...and all were close losses. This is going to be a great chance for us to run out some young guys against Kutztown as well as shake off the rust against some stiff competition from the US Naval Academy. Anyone in the Charlotte area who is interested in times and/or directions, please let me know.
