2006 Ohio Boys Basketball Tournament

Wooo! Just got back from the Columbus Grove - Windham game... my alma mater (Grove) won 75-62! They will play South Webster, who beat Lockland 61-58, on Saturday at 10:45. Go Bulldogs!

BTW, I saw this posted somewhere else but it also belongs here... OJ Mayo is suspended for today's game and possibly for the Saturday game, if they would win today (they are beating Archbol 23-14 at halftime). No details on why he is suspended but it appears to be something school or team related as police have no record of wrong-doing.

State basketball preview capsules

SOUTH WEBSTER (25-2) vs. COLUMBUS GROVE (21-5)

What: D-IV final

When: 10:45 a.m. today

Summary: South Webster has found its postseason groove after falling in the 2004 state title game to Holgate and exiting at the regional final level last year. Prior to this three-year run, the Jeeps had never even won a district title. Senior Nick Aldrige should surpass 2,000 career points today after helping derail Lockland 61-58 in the semis. Guard Eric Maag went for 31 points in Grove's 75-62 defeat of Windham in its semi.

CANTON MCKINLEY (24-2) vs. TROTWOOD-MADISON (22-5)

What: D-I final

When: 8:30 p.m. today

Summary: The deep Bulldogs, led by star Raymar Morgan, could become the sixth Ohio team to defend a big-school title. They get points for an extra-strong schedule, losing only to Oak Hill (Va.) Academy (51-50) and North College Hill (69-67). Trotwood showed some depth in its win over Lancaster. Chris Wright was in foul trouble, but Ibrahim Marone had 18 points and 10 boards, and eight Rams scored.

Division IV - Final

South Webster defeats Columbus Grove 83-65

The long wait was well worth it for the Jeeps.

One day short of two years from their most painful defeat, South Webster celebrated its greatest victory by beating Columbus Grove 83-65 Saturday to capture the Division IV state championship.

Led by Nick Aldridge and Brigham Waginger, the Jeeps more than made up for a semifinal loss in the 2004 state tournament. The 31-28 loss to eventual champion Holgate on March 26, 2004, lingered with the Jeeps - making the school's first state title that much sweeter.

"That was a lot of motivation for our kids," coach Marc Kreischer said of the defeat. "As a player, you use that to psych yourself up."

The Jeeps became the first team from the Southeast District to win a state title since Portsmouth in 1988.

Aldridge, a 6-foot-7 senior headed for Western Carolina, scored 34 points and added four rebounds, three assists, five steals and two blocked shots.

Waginger is a first-team Associated Press All-Ohioan who played for Division III state semifinalist Ironton a year ago and then transferred in. He added 20 points, three assists, eight rebounds and five more steals.

The Jeeps forced 22 turnovers and turned them into 24 game-deciding points.

Second-team All-Ohioan Kyle Meyer had 18 points and Tyler Kohls 10 for Columbus Grove (21-6), which was trying to become the 67th school to win a title in its first trip to the state tournament.

After the final seconds melted off the clock, reserve Josh Campbell hurled the game ball straight up off the giant four-sided video monitors over midcourt. Then the Jeeps - laughing and waving - piled on each other on the Ohio State logo.

Division III - Final

Cincinnati North College Hill defeats Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph 90-73

Two days after he was prevented from playing in the semifinals for missing a class, O.J. Mayo scored 34 points to power top-ranked Cincinnati North College Hill to a contentious 90-73 victory over Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph in Saturday's Division III basketball championship.

It was the Trojans' second state title in a row.

The game will be remembered for Mayo's glittering return (he and teammate Bill Walker dominated throughout) and also for three controversial technicals called against VASJ in the third quarter.

North College Hill's 90 points was a record for a Division III title game.
Ohio State signee David Lighty and Darryl Rushton each had 20 points for VASJ (21-6).

Division II Final

Dayton Dunbar Defeats Wooster Triway 73-46

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The climb back to the top took 19 years
for Dayton Dunbar.

Led by the big three up front of Ohio State-bound Daequan Cook
and 6-foot-8 bookends Aaron Pogue and Mark Anderson, the Wolverines
pulled away to beat Wooster Triway 73-46 Saturday in the Division
II state championship game.

Cook finished with 23 points, three rebounds, five steals and an
assist. Pogue had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Anderson added 14
points and eight rebounds.

The Wolverines (26-2) were pretty good on the perimeter, too.
Norris Cole II had 18 points and five assists and Darran Powell
directed the attack with nine assists.

The title was Dunbar's first since the team led by Mark Baker
(Ohio State), Mike Haley Jr. (Wright State) and Kirk Taylor
(Michigan) won the 1987 championship at the University of Dayton
Arena.

The Wolverines, making their fifth appearance at the state
tournament, were ranked No. 3 in the final regular-season
Associated Press poll. They lost in last year's semifinals.

It was another heartbreaking close call for the Titans, who have
made four trips since 1988 but have never captured a championship.
They lost in last year's championship to Upper Sandusky, 94-86.

Only three other teams in the tournament's 84 years have
finished second two years in a row.

Jeff McCartney scored 12 points and first-team All-Ohioan Linc
Rottman added 11 for the Titans (26-1), ranked fourth in the last
poll.

Jamie Breneman, a hero of last year's run to the final, never
got untracked at Value City Arena. After hitting just 1-of-11 shots
including misses on all four of his 3-pointers in the 58-56
semifinal victory over Columbus DeSales, he hit only 4-of-17 shots
and missed all six shots behind the arc while scoring 8 points
against Dunbar.

The win was Dunbar's 21st in a row. It has not lost since
dropping a 51-46 decision to Ridgeway (Tenn.) on Dec. 26. The
Wolverines' other loss was a 69-54 setback to national power
Lawrence North (Ind.), which features two Cook's future Ohio State
classmates in 7-0 Greg Oden and point guard Mike Conley.

Even though the Wolverines led for most of the game, Triway
didn't fade away. Rottman's 14-foot jumper to open the fourth
quarter cut the lead to 43-37.

But Dunbar started to flex its muscles inside to pull away with
a 10-0 spurt - the Titans remaining scoreless for more than 3
minutes.

Pogue started it with two baskets in the paint before Cole
scored on a follow and Cook hit two foul shots. After Cole added
two free throws, Powell scored on a fastbreak layup to crack the
lead to 55-37 with 4 minutes left.

Triway went cold at the worst time, missing four shots and
committing three turnovers over the Dunbar run.

Dayton Dunbar used a combination of its muscle inside with
Cook's athleticism to take a 27-20 halftime lead.

With the score tied at 16, the Wolverines took the lead for good
on Cook's dunk following up a missed layup by Powell. After a
Triway turnover, Anderson scored inside on another putback for a
20-16 lead.

Powell hit two foul shots to extend the lead to 24-19. Triway
picked up a foul shot by Rottman, but Cook meshed a long 3-pointer
from the right corner in the final seconds of the half.
