Cross surprised his Bulldogs have chance to be 10-0
Thursday, October 26, 2006
By Chris Beaven REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON Another league title. Another trip the playoffs. A run at the state title once the regular season ends. That's the expectation every high school football season for fans of the McKinley Bulldogs.
So for most people, McKinley's 9-0 record heading into the final week of the regular season is no surprise. Don't count head coach Brian Cross among that group.
"At McKinley, people believe you're just going to come out and win every single game," Cross said. "It's good to believe that, but it's unrealistic. Our kids have worked awfully hard to be where we're at."
McKinley is at is exactly the same spot it was a year ago. The Bulldogs are unbeaten and guaranteed a first-round home playoff game heading into Saturday's 115th meeting with Massillon. What remains to be seen is if they can beat the Tigers in the 2 p.m. game at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium to complete a second straight 10-0 regular season for the first time in 50 years.
REBUILDING QUICKLY
To get here, McKinley has come a long way, rebuilding both lines and developing a number of leaders elsewhere.
"When we were picked to win the league, I just shook my head," Cross said. "I couldn't believe it with what we had returning. Of course, we had a good quarterback, a good tailback and three good defensive players back."
But he knew it would be hard for a relatively inexperienced team to roll through the Federal League a second straight year.
"We've been very fortunate," Cross said. "We got a move-in middle linebacker in George Tabron. That has made a big difference. I don't know where we'd be without him. And we've had some other things happen that have helped. Kids that have come around slowly and gotten better. That's all you can ask of your team."
One veteran leader, senior tailback Morgan Williams, said McKinley's success stems from its every-day work.
"I knew if everyone came to play every game and came to practice, we could be a good team," he said. "I think it starts in practice. That's where we've won our games."
VETERANS GET HELP
Williams is 518 yards and 12 points shy of becoming McKinley's career rushing and scoring leader. He has been one of the veterans meeting high expectations, with 1,524 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Quarterback Dan Grimsley has thrown 11 TDs with just four interceptions, completing 51.4 percent of his passes. Center Drew McIntyre anchors the offensive line, which helps McKinley average 35.1 points per game. Kicker Zack Campbell has six field goals, including a school-record 48-yarder.
Defensively, nose tackle Darius Willliams, linebacker Disi Alexander, and cornerbacks Will Sheeler and Brandon Mingo returned with starting experience. They have been a part of a unit that has limited teams to 11.6 points and 209.1 total yards per game.
"I believed in my teammates, and I knew we could be tougher than last year," Darius Williams said.
What's made the difference is the emergence of others.
Receivers Lonnie Richardson and Kenyard Blair became reliable targets. Jewone Snow and Steve Laubacher came along at tight end. The offensive line was rebuilt with Alex Lyon, Max Rehfus, Sean Whited, John Randall, Andrew Sewell, Isaac Gatlin and Isaiah Gatlin.
The Gatlin twins stepped up on the defensive line, along with Martavian Thigpen, Trent Bush, Charles Taylor and Gaylan Roberson. Snow became a force at outside linebacker. Tabron, a transfer from Central Catholic, became an impact player at linebacker. Derrick Gordon and Tremaine O'Neal took over at the safety.
DEFENSE GELS
Darius Williams said the defense began to hit its stride two weeks ago in overtime at Boardman. The Bulldogs tied the game on the final play of regulation. Campbell hit his 48-yard field goal to avoid a shocking upset. Boardman had the ball first in OT, and McKinley's defense stepped up with two sacks, first by Tabron, then a group effort.
"It was four guys hitting all at once," Darius Williams said. "We all just flew in there and got to the ball."
Boardman ended up missing a field goal. Three plays later, Morgan Williams scored on a 10-yard run, and the Bulldogs had another win.
Another strong performance followed last week, a 41-10 win over Jackson, leaving the Bulldogs full of confidence.
"It kind of woke us up," Darius Williams said. "It let us know we could really ... keep it going far in the playoffs."

Playoffs now for Tigers, who likely need win to get in
Thursday, October 26, 2006
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

MASSILLON The marquee outside the Lions Lincoln Theatre in downtown Massillon advertises two shows. One is "Invincible." The other is "Footloose." Friday night, high school football players for the Massillon Tigers will ride past the marquee and under the "Beat McKinley" banner that stretches across Lincoln Way. The town will turn its attention to them.
Maybe players will see the sign. Maybe they'll decide which way they are going to play in Saturday afternoon's showdown against McKinley.
Invincible or footloose?
Invincible is what put the Tigers in this situation: A must-win against the unbeaten Bulldogs if Massillon wants to get into the playoffs. Footloose is what got the Tigers past the Bulldogs in last year's playoffs.
Footloose is what got Massillon from a devastating loss to McKinley in the regular-season finale a year ago and into the Division I title game five weeks later. That confidence stayed in the program through the offseason. Maybe it led to great expectations. Maybe it masked this year's shortcomings.
OVERCONFIDENT EARLY
"I think we probably were overconfident early in the season after our first two wins," Massillon coach Tom Stacy said. "I don't think our captains were. They've been through it. There were guys who are seniors who basically played special teams a year ago and are starters this year. They might've been overconfident. We got our ears pinned back a little bit, and it woke them up to reality. Since then, we've been a better team."
An easy win against North Park, Ontario set up a game against a decent H.D. Woodson team from Washington D.C. The week before playing Massillon, Woodson beat the two-time defending West Virginia state champs. Massillon won, 59-7.
Reality set in when the Tigers lost three of the next four games. They were handled in a 48-14 loss at Moeller. They were beaten at Mentor and lost to St. Ignatius. Two weeks ago, they lost at Warren Harding.
The theme in those losses was turnovers. Massillon was minus-9 in those games.
The Warren loss, though, changed Massillon. The Tigers outplayed Harding, but three turnovers were costly, including one returned for a touchdown. The Tigers defense played a variation of its 3-4 scheme, but it looked more like a 50 defense. It had success.
A young defense gained confidence in a loss.
TURNING POINT IN WARREN?
A year ago, everything Stacy did came up roses. A year later he's found the thorns.
"It has been a more difficult year in some respects," said Stacy, the first Massillon coach to take his team to the state title game in his first season. "The nice thing about it is if we win Saturday, we can reach all our goals still. After all the adversity, all the tough games, tough schedule and tough losses, we still have an opportunity to make the playoffs."
Maybe even host a week 11 game at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
Perhaps in late November if Massillon is still playing, Stacy can point to the Harding game as a turning point.
"It was the most disappointing loss since I've been here next to Week 10 last year against McKinley," Stacy said. "Our kids felt like they were a better team, and we killed ourselves with turnovers."
IT'S A ONE-GAME SEASON
The Tigers are led by All-Ohioan Brian Gamble, a two-way game-changer. He is the team's leading rusher with 877 yards in eight games. Quarterback Bobby Huth has thrown for 1,545 yards and 17 touchdowns. His interceptions are up from a year ago, but Huth has only thrown six picks; three were returned for touchdowns.
Stacy has had to rebuild his offensive line. The team has gone through growing pains at linebacker. The bug might be worked out.
Then again, they may not be. It could be harsh to call this a Jekyll and Hyde team. Massillon has played the toughest schedule around.
Stacy's team is 5-4, teetering on the brink of disaster and brilliance.
"That's an unknown at this point," Stacy said of what kind of team this can be. "We've shown signs of being a good football team at times, and at other times we're pretty average. We're going to find out a lot about ourselves Saturday. Are we worthy of being a playoff team? Ask me Saturday."

Morgan Williams No. 23, senior, tailback
Stark County's top tailback the last two years, Williams is at his best in big games. In a showdown of unbeatens three weeks ago, he delivered 241 yards in a win over Perry. He went for 172 yards on just 17 carries in last week's win over Jackson with first place on the line. He tied a school record with 335 yards in a big road win last year at Hoover. And McKinley fans will remember his 234 yards rushing against Massillon in last year's Week 10 clash of unbeatens. That set a record for most yards rushing by a Bulldog against Massillon in 114 games between the schools. Williams also returns kicks and has seen action in the secondary.
Will Sheeler
No. 4, senior, cornerback
A true multidimensional threat, Sheeler can make a difference in all phases. Defensively, he is a shut-down cornerback. He also is a ball hawk, with a team-high seven interceptions. Despite not being all that big (5-foot-8, 158 pounds), he is not afraid to come up in run support and deliver a huge hit. Offensively, Sheeler backs up Williams and has shown he can be a gamebreaker. He has scored eight TDs on just 56 offensive touches. Sheeler also is dangerous on special teams, averaging 16 yards on eight punt returns and 23.4 on five punt returns.
Disi Alexander
No. 2, senior, linebacker
McKinley's defensive enforcer, Alexander lines up at outside linebacker but can make plays anywhere on the field. He has the size and power to rush the passer, is strong against the run, and his speed and quickness allow him to drop back and defend the pass. Alexander also will see time at receiver and make plays on special teams. He had a big 52-yard kickoff return against GlenOak and blocked a punt against Hoover.
Zack Campbell
No. 10, senior, kicker-punter
Of the five, Campbell will see the least time on the field. But his impact could end up as the biggest. He made perhaps the biggest play of the season, nailing a school-record 48-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to force overtime at Boardman. McKinley went on to win that game. His ability to hit clutch field goals, though, is just part of his importance. He has become a reliable punter, with a season-long of 65 yards. And he helps limit kickoff returns by regularly putting kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
Dan Grimsley
No. 12, senior, quarterback
Like Williams, this will be his third start in the backfield against Massillon. Grimsley's accuracy on the deep ball, especially on post routes, gives McKinley the ability to strike quickly. When Grimsley gets in a rhythm throwing shorter routes, McKinley becomes especially tough. Grimsley also has directed a pair of clutch fourth-quarter drives on the road. The first, at Lake, produced a game-winning TD with 20 seconds left. The second, at Boardman, led to a game-tying field goal on the last play of regulation, as the Bulldogs won in overtime.

Massillon players to watch
Thursday, October 26, 2006

Brian Gamble No. 26, senior,
tailback/defensive back
If Gamble is on and the offense is clicking around him, Massillon is very tough to beat. Gamble has a head for the game and understands concepts and schemes, including the ones the other team is using - a rare combination in a high school player. His carries have been reduced from a year ago, but he did miss a game with an injury. He still has 877 yards rushing, about half of Massillon's team rushing yards. Defenses must account for him because of his versatility and speed. Massillon's defense revolves around Gamble, who is tied for the team lead with three interceptions. It will be interesting to see what Massillon does with Gamble against McKinley on defense.
Cody Colly
No. 18, senior, linebacker
Perhaps no Massillon defensive player is more improved than Colly. A 3-4 defense requires good-to-great play from the LB. The theory of the defense is to get another athletic LB on the field. Colly corrected the problem. "He's a guy we thought about replacing in the middle of the season, and he has since refused to allow us to do that," Stacy said. "He made changes in how he plays and has made himself into a pretty good player." Colly is second on the team in tackles behind Scassa. Colly has a wide wingspan and can knock down passes. He isn't big, but he has deceptive quickness and speed. He will have to be attentive in Massillon's blitz scheme.
Andrew Dailey
No. 10, senior, linebacker/flanker
Penn State doesn't offer marginal players a full scholarship. Dailey is anything but marginal. Dailey is playing a new position, moving from safety to outside linebacker. He again is all over the field. Coach Tom Stacy has moved Dailey around on offense more, and Dailey has 20 catches for 256 yards and two TDs. At outside linebacker, Dailey does a nice job as an edge rusher, but Massillon doesn't send him after the QB too often. He is too valuable as a tackler and in coverage. He is a weapon on offense who has to be accounted for. He is a big target with speed and a big frame.
Antonio Scassa
No. 47, senior, fullback/linebacker
He is half of Massillon's inside linebacker tandem and has improved every week. Scassa is a sparkplug. He blitzes well, tackles well and loves contact. Stacy said he has played hurt on and off all year and he refused not to play. "He and Brian Gamble are our two vocal leaders, and he does a great job with leadership. He is not the best athlete I've coached, but he finds a way to get it done," Stacy said. Scassa needs to be a sure tackler as Massillon's defense wants to contain McKinley RB Morgan Williams.
Bobby Huth
No. 16, senior, quarterback
Fans would have a tough time coming up with another QB who has been more consistent and put his team in better position. In two seasons, Huth has thrown for 3,565 yards and completed 266-of-437 passes. He has 35 TD passes and 12 interceptions. There is a misconception Huth is being picked off more this year. He threw six picks in 15 games last year, six through nine games this season. But Massillon has thrown the ball more this year. Huth is one of the toughest players in the county. He is under-sized, but stronger than a year ago. If his young line gives him time to throw, he can pick a defense apart. Huth is throwing on the run off rollouts more. In two games against McKinley last year, he threw for 180 yards.

Make or break
Friday, October 27, 2006
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

MASSILLON - When Tom Stacy was on his way to the final booster club meeting of the regular season, a fashion faux paux struck him. He turned around, returned home and grabbed his orange blazer.
The Creamsicle-colored look is a fashion statement only the head coach of the Massillon Tigers can pull off. It was a gift from the booster club during last year's state title game run.
If the Tigers beat McKinley on Saturday at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, Stacy can wear whatever he wants.
If not, the second-year Massillon head coach knows what he'll wear: A disappointing 5-5 season for the next 10 months.
Stacy lost his first game to McKinley as Massillon's coach last year at Fawcett Stadium. Massillon came out flat, then got flattened. The Tigers recovered for a postseason run that included beating the Bulldogs in the regional final.
Massillon's playoff picture this year isn't as sure as a year ago entering Week 10. Lose Saturday, and there may not be a second chance.
"The biggest difference between last year's game and this year is we're the underdog," Stacy said. "Last year, I'm not sure either team knew where they stood as far as being the favorite. ... We're the decided underdog this year, there's no question about that. Our kids are kind of relishing that role."
A McKinley win would give the program its first back-to-back 10-0 seasons since 1955 and '56. It may eliminate Massillon from the playoffs, creating an easier postseason road for the Bulldogs that doesn't include Massillon.
Both teams enter this game averaging similar point production. Massillon is averaging 34 points a game, McKinley 35. The difference is on defense. The Tigers have given up 19 points a game, the Pups 12.
Stacy knows he may be facing the prospect of a better McKinley team than last year.
"I think they're getting there," Stacy said. "I think they could be better than they were last year. For me to say that, I really don't know. I'll have a better idea Saturday."
Massillon isn't the same team it was a year ago. The Tigers have played a brutal schedule, but they did so while replacing virtually the entire offensive line and two inside linebackers.
The defense has been hurt by the absence of Michael Porrini and the move of Quentin Nicholson before the season.
" ... We've coached better this year, and coached harder," Stacy said. "We have a whole offseason to do things. We just haven't had the same breaks we had last year. We've had more injuries; we've turned the ball over more.
"Porrini and Nicholson are two big losses. One moved away, the other has played very little. We've had to overcome adversity as a staff before the season started, then throughout with injuries."
Stacy has coached this team a little different. There are young players still learning. Sometimes a loss can be a win.
"I think eight to 10 years ago I'd have handled it differently," he said. "We try to stay positive. We tell them we're going to encourage them, and we're going to coach hard. The guys who don't want to play hard are the guys who won't play. When they make a play, we pat them on the back. When they make a mistake, we're going to get after them.
"You learn about yourself and what kind of football coach you are with every game."
What kind of coach is Stacy this year?
Ask him - or anyone else in Massillon, for that matter - on Saturday.

Tigers ruin Bulldogs? shot at 10-0
Sunday, October 29, 2006
By Chris Beaven repository sports wRITER

MASSILLON - At a loss for words, Antonio Scassa stopped talking and started hugging. Player after player, coach after coach, the senior inside linebacker looked determined to hug everyone associated with the Massillon Tiger football team. A season-saving 10-7 win over McKinley left Scassa running all around the soaked turf at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium to celebrate with any Tiger he could find Saturday.
"I don't know how to say it," Scassa said of his emotions after the win. "It just ... it feels good, it feels good."
Massillon's win in front of 17,950 assured the Tigers (6-4) of a spot in the Division I playoffs in Region 2. It also spoiled McKinley's chances for a second straight 10-0 regular season.
"We beat McKinley, we're going to the playoffs and we're going to make a run," Scassa shouted.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in the state, also are headed to the playoffs. But they go in after a sloppy offensive performance helped end their school-record streak of 24 straight wins in the regular season.
"You can't beat your sister when you turn the ball over four times like we did," said McKinley head coach Brian Cross, who counted a blocked punt as turnover No. 4 to go with three lost fumbles.
McKinley's inept ball-handling offset a fine defensive effort. The Tigers gained just 140 total yards.
McKinley middle linebacker George Tabron made more than a dozen tackles, four for losses. Defensive end Martavian Thigpen was in on three tackles for loss, in addition to two sacks.
"I thought our defense played really well," Cross said. "For them to rush for 57 yards on 40 carries, you can't get much better than that."
But the Tigers had no turnovers and they also played strong defense.
"People were talking about how our defense couldn't stop McKinley," Scassa said. "We came out and proved ourselves."
Scassa made four tackles for loss in the second half. Fellow inside linebacker Cody Colly made two fumble recoveries. And the rest of the defense was there to make sure McKinley all-state tailback Morgan Williams never made a game-changing play.
"We got to the ball and we swarmed the ball," Scassa said. "If someone missed a tackle, someone else was there to make it. We played as a team and we played great."
Williams rushed for 159 yards on 29 carries, but he gained only 27 yards on his 12 second-half carries.
"We knew we had to come out and stop the run, and hit the (crap) out of them," Scassa said.
McKinley wasted no time asserting itself. Disi Alexander and Tremaine O'Neal combined for a huge hit on the opening kick. The McKinley defense then forced a three-and-out.
The Bulldogs took over at their 48 after a punt and scored in three plays. After an incomplete pass, Williams broke free for 29 yards to the right. Tabron followed with a 23-yard TD on a trap play through the middle. Zack Campbell's PAT gave McKinley a 7-0 lead with 9:31 left in the first quarter.
"For a lot of us on defense, it was our first time starting in a Massillon-McKinley game," Scassa said. "We had big eyes out there early on. After that, we settled down and played the game."
Massillon head coach Tom Stacy just encouraged the Tigers to, "keep playing, keep fighting."
" ... We took advantage of a couple opportunities and got back into it."
Massillon special teams created the first opportunity. Junior Corey Hildreth blocked a punt, giving the Tigers the ball at the McKinley 30. Two plays later, Massillon had its touchdown.
Quarterback Bobby Huth pump-faked an out route to receiver Trey Miller, who quickly turned upfield as the defender slipped. Huth lofted a pass to the right to Miller, who scored on the 29-yard play.
The Tigers picked up just five more first downs and finished with six three-and-outs.
"We mustered just enough offense to get a win," Stacy said.
The Tigers scored the decisive points midway through the third quarter. Colly recovered a fumble at the Bulldog 47. Huth's 14-yard completion to Giorgio Jackson on a third-and-four put them in field goal range. A sack by Alexander and Thigpen nearly knocked them out of range.
But Steve Schott was still close enough to make a career-long 47-yard field goal with 6:38 left.
The Tigers made the lead hold up, setting up an apparent first-round playoff game at Perry. McKinley unofficially fell to the region's second seed, and hosts Toledo St. John's.
"We got to close the door on this now," Williams said. "We have a state title to win. Whoever our next opponent is, we have to beat them. We have five more games to go."
Massillon is thinking the same way.
"We've got a whole new season," Stacy said. "There's no reason we can't make a run."
