High School 2006 Division 6 Final: Shadyside (11-2) vs. Maria Stein Marion Local (12-2)

Otte is a hoss and a half from I've heard. I wonder if their philosophy will change at all. Is anyone going to make the game? I might make it early for a tour of the HOF and then hit up the tailgate.

OSUGrad21 I PM'ed you.

Marion Local's star running back questionable for finals

By Greg Billing
Dayton Daily News

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Shadyside's defense is bracing for Marc Otte in the Division VI state final Friday. Otte, meanwhile, is bracing his knee. Marion Local's 2,000-yard running back plans to test his injured right knee during warmups Friday, then determine if he'll play in the title game at 3 p.m. at Canton's Fawcett Stadium.
"He's going to try and give it a go," Marion coach Tim Goodwin said, "but as of right now we don't know what level he's going to perform at."
Otte injured his knee making a cut during last week's regional final win. On Monday, Goodwin said there was ligament damage but Otte put off an MRI until after the season. He'll use therapy and a brace to try to get ready for Friday. Otte rushed for 265 yards and three touchdowns in the regional final win, giving him 753 yards in four postseason games and 2,097 overall.

REAILTY CHECK: Tigers are tenacious

By: RICH GIBSON, T-L Sports Writer
NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Is this football team on a mission, or what? Advancing in the OHSAA football playoffs is a difficult enough task. But this Shadyside bunch is performing at another level all together. Coach Ty Fleming and his tenacious Tigers did it again here Friday night, completely taking apart a formidable Mogadore outfit in a state semifinal confrontation, no less. "It's sort of surreal right now," exclaimed junior wideout Nathaniel Haney in an unsuccessful bid to comprehend what he and his teammates have accomplished. That would be the school's first-ever appearance in a state football championship game where -- this just in: the Orange will not be favored. "We know we'll be the underdog, but that's ok," smiled senior star Taylor Jovicic. "(Making it to the championship game) was one of our goals. But we won't be happy just getting there." Jovicic has spent the past two Fridays tearing through the Tuscarawas County night. His performance against Mogadore bordered on ridiculous. "He even blew me away," admitted his father/assistant coach Rudy Jovicic. "The way he's playing (in the postseason) has been scary." The superb senior has had plenty of company. Like the junior duo of Haney and QB Billy Merryman who burned the Wildcats on a number of big-time plays resulting in 200-plus yards and two scores. "We're on the same page," Merryman related. "Nathaniel runs great routes. If I can get it to him, he's usually gonna make the play." In a near duplication of their early strike vs. Danville a week earlier, the Tigers exploded on their first play from scrimmage. On a play originally designed to be a quick out, Merryman and Haney recognized coverage and went for the jugular. A perfect pass and catch resulted in a quick six. "The kids have just been executing on both sides of the ball," beamed a delighted Fleming. "I couldn't be more thrilled for them and our coaching staff. We want to enjoy this for a little while, then start getting re-focused. The job's not finished yet." Defensive coordinator Mark Holenka, meanwhile, masterminded yet another winning game plan against Mogadore. "Our guys (defensively) have been playing so well together. Right now, it's contagious," Holenka noted. "We've had great teams in the past that's come up just short (of the state finals). We've been waiting to break down that wall. Now, we finally have." For their next act, the Orange must confront a two-time Division VI titlist in Marion Local. "It's almost like playing up two divisions. That's how much talent Marion Local has," Holenka observed. "We'll break down film and do our best to get the kids ready." This much is certain: Shadyside not only will show up next Friday at Canton's Fawcett Stadium, the Tigers will play with unbridled passion and tenacity, leaving nothing on the field of play. That is their calling card. TIGER PAWS FLEMING will be renewing acquaintances with Marion Local's ninth-year coach Tim Goodwin. "Great guy and perenially a great program," Fleming explained. "Tim and I coached together five years ago at the North-South (All State Game) in Columbus. LEADING 32-0 at halftime, Fleming and the Orange expected Mogadore to attempt an onside kick. "We had all our good hands people up front and did not have an organized return set up," Fleming advised. When the Wildcats opted to kick deep, Jovicic pulled in the reception at his 13 and raced forward. Eighty-seven electrifying yards later, the senior was in the house and the outcome signed and sealed. "Taylor just hit a crease and he was gone," smiled Fleming... HUNDREDS from the Tiger Nation attended Friday's game at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium. That number should swell for next week's 3 p.m. championship encounter. "You probably won't be able to cash a check in town next Friday afternoon," Holenka laughed

I'll give Shadyside this: Beating Mogadore is something to hang your hat on. Then again, maybe Moggy lost on purpose so they wouldn't lose by 50+ to ML again.

FWIW, I think this will be a close game with ML pulling it out in the 4th.

DIVISION VI PREVIEW: Shadyside in new territory
Thursday, November 30, 2006
By Chris Beaven REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON A trip to the state finals does not come without its share of hassles, especially for a first-time qualifier. Ticket requests must be handled, travel plans made. And, of course, there's a week of practices and a game plan to install after hours of film work.
"There's headaches," Shadyside coach Ty Fleming said. "But they're good headaches when you get to this point."
Shadyside (11-2) gets to this point for the first time in eight trips to the state playoffs. The Tigers meet finals regular Maria Stein Marion Local (12-2) in the Division VI state football championship game Friday at Fawcett Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:07 p.m.
Marion Local is seeking its fourth title in five trips to the finals since 2000 under nine-year head coach Tim Goodwin.
"We know we're going to be coming in as the underdog," Fleming said. "Marion Local is a veteran ballclub that's been at this level before."
Fleming described his community, located in eastern Ohio near the West Virginia border, as being "on top of the world."
It is hard to imagine either of these teams as an underdog.
Marion Local, a back-to-back champion in 2000-01, has won 11 straight to reach the finals for the first time since 2003. Nine wins have come by at least three touchdowns. The Flyers routed Norwalk St. Paul, 47-6, last week, as Marc Otte ran for 265 yards and three TDs. Otte, though, suffered a knee injury in last week's second half, which leaves his status in doubt Friday.
Shadyside blasted Mogadore, 45-7, last week. The Tigers are winning playoff games by an average of 47.3-6.3, and have outscored opponents, 357-25, in the last seven games.
Shadyside is led by the talented backfield of quarterback Billy Merryman and backs Taylor Jovicic and Dustin Sadlowski. Jovicic had 124 yards and scored four TDs last week. He also returned the second-half kickoff 86 yards for a TD. Merryman threw for 246 yards, throwing two TD passes to Nathaniel Haney.
Shadyside uses multiple formations but runs the ball about 65 percent of the time. "We do things because of our lack of size to move people around the field," Fleming said.
Just don't look for Shadyside to line up and try to hammer the ball.
"You do that. It's kind of like beating your head against the wall against that team," Fleming said.
Goodwin is impressed with the Tigers. "They've kind of changed," he said. "They were a spread team, a passing team. Now they have that real good running back (Jovicic), and they've got some other good quick kids. ... But it all starts with No. 40 (Jovicic)."
Marion Local's offense starts with Otte, and his potential absence creates a big hole.
"We're talking about a kid who has set our single-season rushing record with over 2,100 yards and has been playing defensive back the last three years," Goodwin said. "We have kids we can replace him with, but they will not able to replace him athletically. But we'll do what we can."
If Otte can't go, starting defensive end Ben Schaefer is the top backup. He is coming back from a broken finger suffered a month ago. Starting flanker Greg Gehret and sophomore Dillon Kremer also are options.
Regardless of who runs the ball, expect Marion Local to stick with its winning formula. "We've been wearing teams down and kind of putting the game away in the second half," Goodwin said.
"They don't do anything fancy," Fleming said. "They just line up and run the ball against you. It's the same way they play defense."
