2006 Buckeyes Forecast, Recruiting, and The Game (Merged)

experience at the CFB level very true but Colt McCoy was 34-2 as a starter in High School and knows how to play football, his over all record is alot better then Vince Youngs was when he 1st came into Texas as the QB.

Also, UT fans correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Colt played against some pretty lousy competition compared to Vince playing the cream of the Texas crop.

texas will struggle the first half of the season or until the new qb gets it going. i think OSU will walk into austin and take care of business becuase the offense will be amazing and the defense will be good enough to stop the new qb

if the defense is 75% of what was on the field this year look out

I hope we do just walk in there and win but I dont think it will be that easy

Looking ahead to the 06 season one thing that has been of concern of mine the past couple seasons even with the great defenses is the lack of turnovers we create. I think of the success the Bengals had this year and alot of it had to do with the fact that they forced alot of TO's. Their D wasnt the best but they seemed to be able to create at least 2 or 3 and sometimes 5 or 6 TO's a game.

TO's could be something that could really help us early in the year.

Last year even with that great defense we were 104 in the country in TO margin.

We recovered 6 fumbles and had 6 ints. That is a whopping total of 12 TO's we created last season.

We lost 16 fumbles and threw 5 picks on the year. For a total of 21.

That is a difference of 9.

I am really hoping we can improve on those fumble numbers this year, b/c the number of picks is about where it needs to be.

We should be able to force at least 2 TO's a game with the speed we have and the pass rusher we have.

Anyone have any explanation why we can't create TO's.

My guess would be that both Ginn and Gonzalez will be splitting a vast majority of those catches. Albert Dukes is supposed to be Holmes' clone (supposedly just as good of a route-runner) but we haven't seen him play much save for garbage time here and there. I'd like to think that Ginn will become "the guy" as he has really started to refine his WR skills (a position he didn't play in HS).

For our 4th WR look out for Robiske. I think he is going to step up in a big way. I think Hall is going to have a breakout senior season.

Sorry for the double post, hall creates tons of mismatches on the field with his size. I'd love to see him lineup as a tightend here and there, especially since that has yet to be on film.

I think that the TE experiment is over. I think Frost and Nicol are going to man that position just fine.

I think we are going to see Hall take over for Holmes. He really stepped up and had some big catches in the scUM and Notre Dame games.

I think we are going to see quite a few different formations this year, much like last year.

Yeah, but I don't think we can expect anywhere near as much production this year.

Well maybe not the same types of plays, but those will go to Ginn and Gonzo and Hall is going to be the possession reciever, who can go get the jump ball in the redzone.

It will be a litle different passing game this year. Tress will adapt to our stregths.

Hall will have a breakout season. Take it to the bank.

And second question, obviously Ginn is a world of talent, and Gonzalez and Hall are back, but which one is going to be ol' reliable?.
- Holmes simply cannot be replaced. His speed and hands can be matched, perhaps even his clutch catches (if a youngster steps up). But his route running was simply unbelievable.
- Ginn will continue to improve, as seen late in the year (much sharper wideout skills than in september). He was still to raw as a WR against texas, and if that changes his home run ability will be a factor, unlike last year (outside of returns).
- Gonzo is our #2, but will remain in the slot in 3+ wide formations.
- Hall was a steady possession WR for us, but never a major target. The coaches are very high on his progression.
- Dukes, Robiskie are the early "next" guys, as both have drawn rave reviews from the staff. Albert is supposed to be a Holmes clone and was better coming out of HS. He showed serious talent at our spring game, but had a case of the dropsies. Robiskie provides us with another "big" target, but I see him riding the bench behind Hall early in september.

Synopsis: Still pretty good at WR.

The above discussion regarding the receivers got me thinking about other position battles that will be fun to watch this spring:

1. Even more than the backers, what's happening at corner? Jenkins should be solid, and Amos vs. Coleman will be interesting. Been quiet on the Underwood front lately. There's opportunity for new guys here.
2. Obviously all eyes will be watching to see who emerges at the LB spots. The possibilities and combinations are endless.
3. Penton vs. the DE's - again, there are a lot of things that could happen. If Penton has a great spring, it could push Patterson out to end. If the ends step up, Patterson stays inside. The way Heacock rotates, a lot of guys should see time.
4. Pretorious vs. Pettrey - in JT's eyes, this is probably the most important battle.
5. Boeckman vs. Schoenhoft - yeah, I know, who cares who's #3? But I think it will be interesting to see who gets a leg up heading into 2007.
6. Wells vs. Wells vs. Haw - This should be a fun one to watch. Contrasting styles, we'll see who produces running with the ones (with Pittman out).

Fun to speculate about what happens. New faces in a lot of places. Older guys with new roles, a now or never mentality for some. Should make for some great competition this spring.
