2006 BP Awards: The Spielman (Best LB)

Chris Spielman was one of the greatest Buckeyes of all time, regardless of postion. From 1984 to 1987, Spielman manned the middle of the Ohio State defense, earning the following honors: All Big Ten (three times), All American (twice), and the Lombardi Award (1987). Ohio State has had many outstanding linebackers both before and since Chris Spielman, but one of the best is James "Lil Animal" Laurinaitis, who as a sophomore this season posted some remarkable numbers: 100 tackles, 10 TFL's, 4 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 3 forced fumbles for an undefeated team. Every time the Buckeyes' defense needed a big play, Laurinaitis was there to make it. For these reasons, Lil Animal was named the winner of The Spielman by the voters of Buckeye Planet!

The top finishers are set forth below, with number of first place votes in parentheses:

James Laurinaitis (Ohio State) - 196 (22)
Patrick Willis (Mississippi) - 163 (13)
Paul Posluszny (Penn State) - 74 (1)
Buster Davis (Florida State) - 56
H.B. Blades (Pitt) - 33
David Harris (Michigan) - 31
Brandon Siler (Florida) - 24
J Leman (Illinois) - 19
Rey Maualuga (Southern Cal) - 16
Ali Highsmith (LSU) - 12
Ameer Ismail (Western Michigan) - 10
Sam Olajubutu (Arkansas) - 10
Shawn Crable (Michigan) - 9 (1)
Rufus Alexander (Oklahoma) - 6

Great that L'il Animal gets the nod.

Also nice to see Blades getting some recognition - he had a very fine season for Pitt and will likely get a serious look early in the draft (no matter what bouffant Mel thinks).
