Combine helps sort out top recruits By Christopher Lawlor, USA TODAY
SAN ANTONIO — The main event Saturday was the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but the National Combine created a buzz of its own.
While 78 seniors concluded their high school football careers at the Alamodome, the nation's top 500 juniors participated Saturday and Sunday in an event modeled after the NFL combine, measuring each athlete's speed, strength and jumping ability.
"This is early enough in the year that kids aren't intimidated to compete against one another," says analyst Tom Lemming of CSTV.
<table align="left" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td>
</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Wide receiver Percy Harvin of Landstown (Virginia Beach) and offensive lineman Andre Smith of Huffman (Birmingham, Ala.) zoomed to the top of recruiting lists last year after superlative performances at the combine.
Five of the six quarterbacks in this year's U.S. Army game attended last year's combine. Other combine alumni include Ted Ginn Jr. of Ohio State, Tom Zbikowski of Notre Dame and Derrick Williams of Penn State.
Elite juniors who attended this year included QB Pat Bostick of Manheim (Pa.), QB Peter Lalich of West Springfield (Springfield, Va.), QB Cameron Newton of Westlake (Atlanta), RB Armando Allen of Hialeah (Miami), RB Chris Rainey of Lakeland (Fla.), L Sam DeMartinis of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks Calif.), LB Lorenzo Edwards of Edgewater (Orlando), DE Sidell Corley of McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.) and RB Caleb King of Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.).
King was the combine's overall MVP. The offensive MVP was Allen, and end Brandon Joiner of Shoemaker in Killeen, Texas, was defensive MVP.
"(Combines) have a value because coaches can get a true evaluation of a player and usually the players are pushing themselves to excel against their peers," Nebraska assistant John Blake says.

"A beast to watch out for right now is Anthony Davis, an offensive lineman from Piscataway High School in Piscataway, New Jersey. Davis has a huge frame and also a huge nasty streak. He didn't just want to dominate, he wanted to humiliate."

Maybe Jenkins can help us with this kid!

Jordan Mabin from Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio was our pick for the combine's best defensive athlete. Truth be told, we thought Mabin's play at defensive back was so good that we had to figure out a way to get him on the list, and his athleticism is as good as any of the defensive backs that showed up.

Wecould be looking at bringin in 4 SUPER athletes next year in Jordan Mabin, Brian Gamble, Devon Torrence and Donnie Evege. All are around 5'11" - 6' and 185-200 pounds. Speed kills and they all have it. This team will be very exciting if we can bringin all 4. They can all play CB, or RB.. and maybe Torrence as a WR. I cannot stop smiling.

2006 U.S. Army All-American Combine team, based on their performances.

Players of interest to Ohio State.....

Dan Barry, OL from Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio.
Jordan Mabin as a defensive back.

They also said:

On defense, it was nearly as hard to try and limit the number of amazing defensive linemen to only four. Kaniela Tuipulotu from Kahuku, Hawaii and Joseph Barksdale from Cass Tech in Detroit missed making the cut by a nose, but deserved to be included here because of their overall play.

Torrence will play WR, I hope. Deep class of defensive backs next year in Ohio.

True and I think he will. Very explosive with the ball in his hand. Kind of Ted Ginn-ish. Maybe not quite as good at this point as Teddy was, but same frame and athleticism. I say we look to get Evege and Gamble as CB's and Oliver and Clifford as Safeties. This would be the ideal class DB imo and we won't have to leave Ohio.

I would like to bring in Mabin at CB as well. Torrence on offense. I think we are recruiting Nick Sukay (same school as Andy Miller) from PA at Safety along with Oliver and Clifford. Also, in a new Bucknuts recruiting update article they state that Kyle Jefferson (they list him as 6'4" 180) as playing safety.

Any word if we are recruiting Sidney Glover from Warren Harding as a safety. He was one of the best safeties I saw last year along with Brian Gamble. Gamble is just an amazing athlete and could play multiple positions.

I wish there was more Ohio talent represented at the Junior combine.
