2005-2006 Latest Men's Basketball Rankings (Currently #6)

GD01, here ya go....

But while many bracketologists favor Memphis for the final slot, ESPN's Dick Vitale said the Buckeyes will get the nod as long as they survive their quarterfinal meeting with Penn State at noon today.

"I really believe Thad Matta and his kids, if they make it to at least the semifinals, will end up as a No. 1 seed," he said Tuesday in Dayton. "You can look at Memphis, but I give the edge to Ohio State (because) winning the regular-season title in the Big Ten shows you have durability."

ESPN's bracketologist thinks they will get the 1 seed if they win the conference tourny.......because they would be the #1 team in the #1 conference.

I learn every day from Tibor. In fact, you could say he's my personal hero.

Here I was foolishly thinking that, no matter how we do in the tournament, the Buckeyes will enter one of the most important recruiting periods this year when they recruit for the 2007/8 team. I thought it might make a big difference to some kid sitting on the fence if, prior to that great class of recruits, we already had achieved a top 5 ranking, won the Big Ten, etc. Top 10 is great but some kids may not take it as much of a recommendation.

I also foolishly thought that Coach Matta might be more likely to impress parents if he gets these guys into the top 5 and gets that Coach of the Year Award.

Thanks to Tibs, I am straightened out and flying right:roll1: .

Oh, and don't you worry, I'll be berating myself the rest of the afternoon over my stupidity.

Come to think of it, it just feels right that we have Tibs here on Chuck Norris' birthday.

Given the fact that Matta was able to recruit the best player in teh country despite having an NCAA investigation over his head and an unranked team shows that a top 5 versus a top 10 ranking really doesn't mean much of anything to his ability to get recruits. Anybody with a shred of intelligence could figure that out. Maybe that's why you were confused?

:tibor:

If you really were as clever as you think, Tibs, then you would realize that Matta has been working on those recruiting relationships for the past five years. His recruiting relationship with these players began when he recruited then for Xavier, which has been a consistent top team.

You also would realize that the logic of your argument is nonexistent. Just because he recruited these players doesn't mean he could recruit others. Just because he recruited these players, doesn't mean he couldn't have done it more easily if his team was top 5 last year. Surely even someone like you, without a shred of intelligence, can see there is no logical connection in the argument you raise.

My point remains valid, to some kids a top 5 ranking means you had a shot at it all and just missed. A top 10 ranking means you had a really good team but probably didn't make it to the real elite. If you don't agree with that opinion, then fine, disagree.

But before you start referring to anyone else's intelligence, realize that in this particular case, you are way out of your league and secondly, at least try to string together a coherent argument instead of your usual fare of opinion, innuendo, and incoherence.

Except that NOBODY pays attention to the polls that will come out next week. Nobody important that is. I doubt Matta will even remember what our final ranking is a year from now. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe there is some tournament coming up? :roll1:

If you look at the pattern of losses, the Buckeyes look pretty good against other top teams. Memphis, of course, hasn't played anyone.

Team 2 losses in how many games?

Memphis 2 losses in last 20 games
tOSU 2 losses in last 12 games
UConn 2 losses in last 7 games
Texas 2 losses in last 6 games
Nova 2 losses in last 5 games
Pitt 2 losses in last 5 games
Duke 2 losses in last 3 games

Really? So, it won't be on the headers to the basketball page or appear on the ohiostatebuckeyes.com website or be anywhere else to be seen? :roll1:

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to learn from you, Tibs!

I haven't heard something that stupid in a while. Thanks for the laugh.

I hate sticking up for tibs, but I think you are a little offbase. Of course it is easier to recruit on the heels of great success, but Matta's recruiting success is because of his character, track record and attitude. I feel confident Matta will recruit well regardless of how we do in the tourney this year, as much of his recruiting for 07 and 08 is well underway (if you count Koufos and Lauderdale, he already has 5 verbals).

Oden, Conley were targets forever. I'm not sure about Cook. I'm pretty sure Lighty was not a long-term project, and I'm almost positive he wasn't recruiting Hunter over the years.

He started it off with 5-star 08 center BJ Mullens. Then the Thad5 was assembled. He then followed that up with Diebler in 07, and two 07 likely buckeyes (writing is on the wall) from Koufos and Lauderdale (both elite talents). Then he secured another 5-star in 08 in Offutt.

Any school benefits in prestige by doing well in the tourney. But Matta accomplished all of this with zero success in March (other than beating Illinois) at OSU. These kids are coming to play for Thad and what he is building, not for the football fanbase, minimal tourney presence, and almost no NBA production.

I don't mean to bash OSU, as we have a rich history that stumbled a little recently, and there are many attractive things about Columbus. But these kids are here for thad, plain and simple. And all of the above recruits decided before any of the success in 2005 took place.

If your theory comes true and it truly enhances our recruiting (which is a tall order considering our success so far), then we will have 8+ McD AA's every year.
