MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Vince Grier had 15 points and eight rebounds, leading energized Minnesota to a 69-55 upset over No. 12 Michigan State on Saturday.
Zach Puchtel scored 13 points, J'son Stamper added 12 and Adam Boone and Moe Hargrow each had 10 for the Gophers (12-9, 3-7 Big Ten), who have won three of four since shuffling their lineup. Shannon Brown scored 17 of his 19 points after halftime and Paul Davis had 17 points for the Spartans, who were outscored 22-6 over the final 6 1/2 minutes. They went 6 minutes without a field goal down the stretch, until Brown's meaningless layup with 46 seconds left cut the lead to 65-55.
Minnesota had 17 assists and only eight turnovers, preventing Michigan State (18-6, 6-4) from keeping pace with first-place Iowa in the conference race.
The Spartans rarely get outmuscled and outhustled, but that's what was happening until early in the second half when Brown started to get free and found his touch.
The final 15 minutes were tight and intense, with the score swinging back and forth between a tie and a two-point difference -- until Boone's long jumper with 6:22 left tied the game at 49 and sparked Minnesota on its game-closing run.
Grier had given the Gophers, and the crowd, a big boost minutes earlier with a steal and a sweeping, one-handed dunk at the end of the fast break to give his team a 43-41 lead.
Playing a ranked opponent for the fourth time in five games, Minnesota was full of pep from start to finish -- frequently pumping fists, encouraging the fans and bumping chests throughout the first victory over Michigan State since January 2003.
Coach Dan Monson has already used 12 different starting lineups. Though this one includes two walk-ons in Jamal Abu-Shamala and Puchtel to go with Grier, Boone and Stamper, it seems to be his best.
Buoyed by their second road win of the season in seven tries, 77-66 at Penn State on Wednesday, the Gophers controlled the first half with the kind of pesky defense they played routinely on their way to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2005.
Maurice Ager had all six of his points before halftime, plus three fouls. Brown tried only two shots and the Spartans committed 10 turnovers, against just six assists, in falling behind 31-25 at halftime.
Puchtel, a thick, scrappy forward who transferred from Harvard because he was bored with the athletic atmosphere in the Ivy League, tangled with Michigan State's Marquise Gray underneath the basket during a fight for rebounding position early in the second half.
Grier stepped in and confronted Gray, and both got technical fouls. Minutes later, after a few more shoves and glares, the officials made both teams huddle in the lane for a lecture that the rough stuff wouldn't be tolerated.
Another Big ten upset

NO. 18 IOWA 66 NO. 16 MICHIGAN STATE 54

Iowa increases Big Ten lead to full game over Ohio State

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

By Luke Meredith ASSOCIATED PRESS

IOWA CITY, Iowa — It’s been a long time since Iowa has won a Big Ten regular-season title. So long, in fact, that no team that’s called Carver-Hawkeye Arena home has done it.

But last night, the 18 th-ranked Hawkeyes took a huge step toward their first outright conference title in 36 years.

Greg Brunner scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jeff Horner had 15 points and six assists and Iowa picked up its fifth straight win over a ranked opponent, beating No. 16 Michigan State 66-54.

The Hawkeyes (20-6, 9-3) set a school record with their 16 th consecutive win at Carver-Hawkeye — which opened in 1983 — and are a full game ahead of Ohio State in the Big Ten standings with four games to play.

Iowa last won the Big Ten in 1969-70, when it played at U of I Fieldhouse.

The Hawkeyes held a share of the crown in 1978-79.

"It’s a tremendous win for our program. We’re in the midst of a special journey. We’re trying to win something," Iowa coach Steve Alford said. "It’s going to be an incredible battle, but this was a big hurdle."

Horner keyed a 14-4 run that gave Iowa an 11-point lead midway through the second half. He pushed Iowa’s lead to five with a threepointer, drew a charge on the ensuing possession and then hit two more threes — the last a 25-footer — to help give the Hawkeyes a 58-47 lead with 7:42 left.

With Paul Davis and Shannon Brown hampered by foul trouble, the Spartans were never able to mount a serious comeback. Brunner gave Iowa its biggest lead, 65-50, on a threepointer with 2:49 left.

The loss was a crushing blow to Michigan State’s conference title hopes.

The Spartans are tied for fifth place — 2½ games behind Iowa — with five games left.

Michigan State committed 18 turnovers, had just nine assists and shot 3 of 17 from threepoint range.

"I’m disappointed that we can’t seem to find the basket," said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. "That affects other parts of the game, too. Now we need to regroup."

Alford dubbed last night’s affair a "separation game," in the Big Ten race.

Even though Michigan State has won only two of seven Big Ten road games, Alford was quick to point out just how important it was for his team to get past a Spartans squad with four starters back from last year’s Final Four team.

"Until somebody proves otherwise, they are the class of our league," said Alford. "They’re getting everybody’s best shot. We gave them our best shot tonight."

Davis led Michigan State (18-7, 6-5) with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Brown added 12 points and eight boards.

Michigan State led briefly early in the second half, 37-35, before Iowa took the lead for good with an 8-0 run highlighted by a pair of putbacks from Erek Hansen.
The Hawkeyes rallied from an early seven-point deficit with a 16-4 run and led 30-26 at the break.

Indiana coach Mike Davis resigned last night effective at the end of the season following the Hoosiers’ 71-68 loss to Penn State in State College, Pa.

A source in the Indiana athletics department told SI.com that Davis informed school officials of his decision more than a week ago, and terms of his departure were finalized this week.

Davis, who missed Saturday’s loss to Iowa because of the flu, has been a target for Hoosiers fans. Indiana (13-9, 5-6) has lost six of seven.
Geary Claxton had 20 points, including a decisive three-pointer late in the game, to lead the Nittany Lions (12-11, 4-8).

No . 14 Illinois 63, Northwestern 47 —

Rich McBride scored 17 points and Illinois (21-4, 7-4) broke a two-game losing streak in beating Northwestern (12-11, 4-7) in a Big Ten game in Champaign, Ill.

The Wildcats mounted a final push with a 12-2 run that trimmed a 13-point lead to three. But the Illini answered with 14 straight points.

Michigan 72, Minnesota 50 —

Michigan (17-6, 7-5) jumped to a 31-6 lead in the first half in routing Minnesota (12-10, 3-8) and ending a three-game losing streak in a Big Ten game in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Looking at the remaining schedules and the current standings you gotta believe this Wednesday's game at MSU is for our share of the B10 title(at least).

I know there are no gimmies in this leauge but scUM, @NU and Purdue is a very doable way to finish after MSU.

The others (Iowa, Wisky and Ill) all tangle still iirc so this game could put us in the drivers seat.

I like the way that sounds. Wednesday will be huge.

All the Big Ten teams with 4 conference losses have at least 1 tough game on the road against one of the other top teams. Wouldn't be surprising at all if the big ten title ends up being a 4 way tie between 5 loss teams.
