ANN HEISENFELT | ASSOCIATED PRESS Minnesota’s Spencer Tollackson and Wisconsin’s Jason Chappell scramble for a loose ball.

No. 21 Wisconsin 64, Minnesota 62 — Alando Tucker had 22 points to lead Wisconsin (13-2, 3-0) over Minnesota (9-4, 0-2) last night in a Big Ten game in Minneapolis.

Wisconsin took a 25-6 lead in the first 17 minutes, and Minnesota made just one of its first 21 shots from the field and only hit three in the first half. But the Gophers’ full-court defense helped force 22 turnovers that led to 28 points.

One thing was obvious in the Wisconsin-Minnesota game: Wisconsin cannot handle full court pressure. They closed the first half with a 11-0 run thanks to a full court press and came back quickly from 15 points down in the second half the same way.

Wisconsin responded to the press with a haemorrhage of turnovers every time.

Wisconsin's style of play is very much like Ohio State's (great offensive efficiency, moderate defensive efficiency and moderate game tempo, see http://www.kenpom.com/). So, it would do us a lot of good to remember that full court defensive pressure will beat these guys.

By the way, maybe a Big Ten record? Minnesota did not score a field goal for the first 15:46 of the game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: BIG TEN ROUNDUP

Illinois converts its free throws at end to defeat Michigan

Sunday, January 15, 2006

ASSOCIATED PRESS

No . 7 Illinois 79, Michigan 74 —
Illinois led by one point with 17 seconds left yesterday in Champaign, Ill., when Warren Carter walked to the free-throw line after getting fouled under Michigan’s basket.
"I knew as soon as I got fouled that I was going to make those free throws," said Carter, who was shooting 63 percent from the line this season.
Both shots swished and the seventh-ranked Illini had all they would need to hold off the Wolverines in a Big Ten game. It was their 31 st consecutive win in Assembly Hall, a run that started Jan. 17, 2004, and ties the school record set between Jan. 15, 1984, and Jan. 4, 1986.
Dee Brown scored 26 and James Augustine 23, and Illinois withstood Michigan’s second-half charge.
Illinois (16-2, 2-1) led 69-60 after Brown made his fourth straight three-pointer with 7:04 to go, but Daniel Horton brought Michigan back with eight points to make it 69-68.
Dion Harris’ two free throws completed a 10-0 run and gave Michigan (11-3, 1-2) a 70-69 lead with 4:01 left, but Augustine put the Illini ahead with two free throws and a layup.
Horton scored 19 points and Courtney Sims 16 and Michigan lost to Illinois for the 11 th consecutive time.

Purdue 72, Minnesota 55 —
Marcus White scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half and Purdue began a 15-5 run with six minutes left to pull away from Minnesota in West Lafayette, Ind.
Matt Painter’s first Big Ten win as Purdue coach ended the Boilermakers’ four-game losing streak and Purdue (7-8, 1-3) matched its victory total from last season.
Adam Boone led Minnesota (9-5, 0-3) with 11 points. Vincent Grier averaged 18 points per game, but Purdue held him to 10 on 3-of-9 shooting.

No . 21 Wisconsin 68, Northwestern 52 —
Alando Tucker had 20 points and seven rebounds in Madison, Wis., and Wisconsin remained the only unbeaten team in Big Ten play.
Northwestern (9-6, 2-2) came in with the stingiest defense in the conference and was averaging a league-low 11.7 turnovers per game. But Wisconsin (14-2, 4-0) used a first-half flurry to build a double-digit lead, went on another run in the second half to put it away.
Vedran Vukusic scored 15 for Northwestern.

Iowa 80, Penn State 76 —
Adam Haluska scored a careerhigh 29 points and Iowa held off Penn State in State College, Pa.
Haluska shot 9 of 17 from the field, including 6 of 10 on three-pointers, and the Hawkeyes (13-4, 2-1) withstood a charge from the Nittany Lions (9-5, 1-2) in the final four minutes. Jamelle Cornley (Brookhaven) tied a career high with 20 points for the second time in three games for the Lions.

Streaking Indiana wins

squeaker against Illinois
No. 13 Indiana 62, No. 7 Illinois 60 -- Marco Killingsworth scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half to help host Indiana beat Illinois on Tuesday night.
Indiana (11-3, 3-1 Big Ten) won for the seventh time in eight games. Illinois (16-2, 2-2) was led by Shaun Pruitt's career-high 17 points, but lost for the second time in three games. Brian Randle added 15 points, but leading scorer Dee Brown, who averaged 15.6 points, had just five.
Indiana used a 15-6 run in the second half to make it 55-40 with 8:23 to go.
The Illini rallied with 12 consecutive points to close to 55-52 with 4:52 left, and Brown missed a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left that would have tied the score. Jamar Smith tipped in the miss to make it 61-60. Robert Vaden then made 1-of-2 free throws with 3.6 seconds left, and Rich McBride's half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark.

</IMG> DUANE BURLESON | ASSOCIATED PRESS Forward Bernard Cote of Northwestern defends a shot attempt by center Courtney Sims of Michigan during the first half of their Big Ten game last night in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan pulled away in the second half for a 68-51 victory to hand Northwestern its third league defeat after two opening victories.

No. 23 Iowa 76, Minnesota 72, 3 OT — Erek Hansen scored a career-high 20 points and Iowa relied on clutch freethrow shooting to beat Minnesota last night in the first triple-overtime game played in Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (14-4, 3-1 Big Ten) made nine straight free throws during a stretch of the second and third overtimes. The Gophers (9-6, 0-4) went 5 of 12 from the line in the extra periods, including missing four straight when they had a chance to seal the victory in the final minute of the second overtime.

Iowa, winner of three straight, pulled away early in the third overtime when Adam Haluska made two free throws to put Iowa up 71-67, their biggest lead since halftime.

Two free throws by Maurice Hargrow got the Gophers within 73-70, but Jeff Horner made three of four free throws over the final 37 seconds and the Hawkeyes held on, handing Minnesota its fourth straight Big Ten loss and sixth in its past seven games in Iowa City.

Greg Brunner had 17 points and a career-high 23 rebounds for Iowa. Horner added 12 points and Haluska 10.

Hargrow led the Gophers with 16 points. Vince Grier had 15 and Adam Boone 14.

Minnesota, playing in its first tripleovertime game since 1982, had plenty of chances to get its first Big Ten win.

Grier had two chances to be the hero, but missed last-second game-winners at the end of regulation and the first overtime.

Brunner had a chance to put Iowa up by one with 35 seconds left in the first overtime, but he missed the second free throw. Minnesota was content to run down the clock and let Grier take the final shot, but his jumper in heavy traffic missed.

The Gophers led by as many as four points in the second overtime, but Iowa clawed back to tie it at 67 when Hansen made two free throws with 51 seconds remaining. Minnesota squandered a chance to take the lead late in the second overtime, but Jonathan Williams missed two free throws with 18 seconds left.

Michigan 68, Northwestern 51 — Lester Abram scored 20 points and Dion Harris had 15 to lead Michigan (12-3, 2-2) past Northwestern (9-7, 2-3) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines broke open a close game with 11 straight points from late in the first half to early in the second.

Wildcats reserve Mohamed Hachad scored 17 points and Vedran Vukusic scored just two of his 15 points in the second half.

The Wildcats have lost three straight after starting 2-0 in the conference for the first time in 23 years.

Penn State 74, Purdue 54 — Geary Claxton had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Walker’s outside shooting sparked a key first-half run as Penn State (10-5, 2-2) defeated Purdue (7-9, 1-4) in State College, Pa.
Matt Kiefer and Marcus White each had 13 points to lead Purdue.

Wisconsin hits rock bottom-Loses to North Dakota State

God this is bad...
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Ben Woodside scored 24 points and North Dakota State upset No. 15 Wisconsin 62-55 Saturday, snapping the Badgers' 27-game winning streak at home against nonconference opponents.

The Badgers tried to rally from an 18-point deficit in the final seven minutes, closing to within 54-47 on Kammron Taylor's layup with 2:00 remaining.

But Alando Tucker missed two free throws with 1:46 remaining, and Woodside intercepted Joe Krabbenhoft's inbounds pass with 1:31 remaining. He was fouled by Taylor on the play, and made two free throws to put the Bison (11-9) ahead 56-47.

The Badgers (14-4) had their chances in the final minutes. But as was the case all game, they couldn't make their shots. Wisconsin shot 16-for-72, including 4-for-27 from 3-point range. The loss added to an already rough week for the Badgers.

The Badgers lost their first Big Ten game at Ohio State Wednesday night, and will be missing two key reserves for an indefinite period of time. The school announced Wednesday that Greg Stiemsma is taking a leave of absence because of undisclosed personal medical reasons. No timetable has been set for his return.Wisconsin also had suspended freshman forward Marcus Landry for the past two games, although the school has not provided a specific reason for the punishment.

The Badgers had another scare Saturday when Krabbenhoft appeared to hurt his jaw with 10:32 remaining in the half.

After sitting on the bench surrounded by trainers, Krabbenhoft went to the locker room. But he was able to returned to the lineup with 6:20 left in the half. He played the second half with a bandage on his chin.

The Badgers' shooting problems began in the first half, as they went a horrid 5-for-29 in the first half and went into halftime down 30-16.

Wisconsin was 1-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half -- including two airball 3-point attempts on the same possession by Ray Nixon and Taylor.

The Bison took a 13-11 lead on Andre Smith's putback, and extended the lead when guard Mike Nelson, a native of Madison, hit a layup to put them ahead 15-11 with 7:19 remaining in the half.

After making only three of their first 13 shots, the Bison made 11 of their last 15 to end the half. Ben Woodside led the Bison with 11 first-half points.

Wisconsin had one field goal in the final 11:50 before halftime.
This is North Dakota State's first year of D1 ball.

IU is getting a lot of calls going their way, fouls that aren't being called the other way...

they need all the ref help they can get, b/c they are leading purdue by 1 with 13 min to go

"indiana having trouble shaking purdue, we expected that... purdue shooting terribly from the field, we expected that." hmm... if you're gonna be arrogant you probably should do a better job of it.

Purdue 32-38 IU
