2003 Fiesta Bowl Pass Interference

I don’t remember much about the Bucknuts days, but I do remember the hours that followed that game. The board was visited by a fair few fine folks from Florida (and some bandwagon riders), committed to doing their civic duty to uphold justice. They were kind enough to inform us that, among other things, we should be prepared for disappointment as an appeal had already been filed with the ncaa (I wonder how that’s going). They were so concerned about our impending disappointment that they were kind enough to also warn us about the immediate return to mediocrity that we would soon suffer. I for one am so glad that they did, as we have less than a full percentage point lead over Boise State for the best record in the FBS since then (when you eliminate the 12 wins from 2010). And oh by the way: kudos to our south Florida brethren for maintaining their own dominance over that time, sitting securely in the top 25 (24th), right between Louisville and Northern Illinois.

This was all very touching, but recall how overwhelmed we were when their concern for us continued over the days that followed. It was so sweet of them to 1) warn us that a suit had been filed in an Arizona court and 2) enjoin us to savor our “soon to be overturned” championship while it lasted. I wonder how that lawsuit is going...

But now... to hear that their concern for us didn’t just last for the hours or even days following that game... that they are still filled with such empathy for us after almost two decades... I don’t even have the words... pardon me I need a moment

Not too long after the game, I read a well-written post on grassy or whatever it was called by a poster named "The Buckeye". It was a long and detailed report, worthy of a newspaper, that detailed how the University of Miami was changing their logo. It went through interviews, it had pictures, the works. In the end it was the image Script shared above (The Buckeye named him "Little Timmy")

To this day it stands as the finest thing I have ever read on the internet.

I accidentally left ESPN on when the replay was over last night and they did a great 2-3 minute factoid job on just how badly the programs had diverged after that game.

Officially told the rest of the world via the world wide propaganda machine that Jim Tressel did indeed break Miami.

Here, I'll do it for you....

"Moxie ... plays in space ... Miami needs to step up here ... tempo ... c'mon America! ... Andre Johnson passes the look test ... tempo ... mesh routes ... Dorsey makes all the throws ... plays in space ... ears pinned back ... moxie ... Miami has speed and confidence ... physicality ... c'mon America! ... Sean Taylor looks good in a uniform ... moxie ... tempo ... I would never let my son play in Jim Tressel's offense...."

I try to keep it classy on Twitter. Yeah, I know, I'm an army of one in that war zone.

Some people on BP actually like Herbie and respect his work, and as the BP Minister of Twitter, I represent those poor lost souls as well.

Now if someone else wants to cut and paste and Tweet, be my guest.

I have as yet to date purchased the requisite Twitter machine.

"The U was back, baby! One of the most entertaining programs of the 80s and early 90s was back with a vengeance and had dudes like Sean Taylor and Johnathan Vilma and Willis McGahee and Kellen Winslow and I guess Ken Dorsey all kicking enormous amounts of ass and looking cool doing it.

The Miami Hurricanes were an established brand that smelled like a dynasty, and nothing gets sport media (and a lot of fans) all hot and bothered like a nice juicy dynasty to build up and then tear down with equal amounts of glee. Their second national championship in a row was something preordained, because without it Miami really couldn't claim to be as dominant as they claimed to be, and if they weren't then what the hell were we wasting all this time talking about them for?

Jim Tressel's Ohio State team, on the other hand, was perceived to be everything that Miami wasn't; boring, more lucky than good, a flash in the pan that likely would flame out after a year, etc.

So when the result of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl turned that narrative on its head, instead of taking a look at just how amazing the Buckeyes' run was, much of the attention was turned to trying to explain why the Hurricanes couldn't seal the deal and enshrine themselves into history. There was more disappointment that Miami hadn't lived up to expectations than amazement that Ohio State had done something that no other college football team had ever done in the modern era. Which was dumb.

For all of these reasons, Miami, you are The Worst."

Just sayin': A pretty good Eleven Warriors article, it pretty much.....
