Zurp

I have misplaced my pants.
(I did a search for 2002 vs. 2007, but nothing came up. Feel free to bitch-slap me and merge, if you want to.)

If you were building a team, which of the following players would you use? Choose all of the players associated with that year.

(Note: try to consider only the players' abilities only from that year. Also, assume no injuries to any player.)

Quarterback:
2002 - Craig Krenzel
2007 - Todd Boeckman

Running Back:
2002 - Maurice Clarett, Lydell Ross, Maurice Hall
2007 - Chris Wells, Maurice Wells, Brandon Saine

Fullback:
2002 - Branden Joe, Brandon Schnittker
2007 - Dionte Johnson, Trever Robinson / Tyler Whaley

Wide Receiver
2002 - Michael Jenkins, Chris Gamble, Chris Vance
2007 - Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline, Ray Small

Tight End
2002 - Ben Hartsock
2007 - Rory Nicol

Offensive Line
2002 - Ivan Douglas, Adrien Clarke, Alex Stepanovich, Bryce Bishop, Shane Olivea
2007 - Alex Boone, Steve Rehring, Jim Cordle, Ben Person, Kirk Barton

Defensive Line
2002 - Darrion Scott, Tim Anderson, Kenny Peterson, Will Smith
2007 - Robert Rose, Doug Worthington, Todd Denlinger, Vernon Gholston
(You may choose Lawrence Wilson over Robert Rose)

Linebackers
2002 - Cie Grant, Matt Wilhelm, Robert Reynolds
2007 - Marcus Freeman, James Laurinaitis, Larry Grant

Defensive Backs
2002 - Dustin Fox, Chris Gamble, Donnie Nickey, Mike Doss, Will Allen
2007 - Malcolm Jenkins, Donald Washington, Kurt Coleman, Anderson Russell, Chimdi Chekwa

Kicker
2002 - Mike Nugent
2007 - Ryan Pretorius

Punter
2002 - Andy Groom
2007 - AJ Trapasso

On defense I would take the '02 D-Line and DB's. Everything else from '07
On offense I would go with CK, '02 recievers, everything esle from '07
I would go with Nuge and Groom in the kicking game.

Its kinda scarry to think that it was tough to make these decisions.

im guessing you mean you have to pick an entire squad and can't pick 1 dl from 02 and another from 07.

qb: ugh... krenzel might have been the worst best qb i have ever seen. boeckman is a better qb. but then, so was mcmullen. gotta give the nod to krenzel. 02

tb: 07. no question. beanie is just as good if not better than moc. wells light + saine is better than ross and hall.

fullback: hmmm, another tough call. i'll go with 07 here.

wr: 07 again. jenkins is the best wr on the list, but robo, hartline and small as a group are much better than the 02 group.

oline: 02.

dline: 02, no question about it.

lb: going with 07 here. unless you let me start hawk over grant, then i might have to rethink things a bit :p.

db's: you little sob! :p i was soooooo ready to jump on 07 till i realized you put the safties into that mix. crap! id have to give it to 02. as a group, they were better.

kicker and punter both go to 02.

2007 - RB (depth, better attitude), WR, OL, LB

either way - FB

Man was this hard....

QB: Craig Krenzle, he just was so clutch and a tough runner

RB: wow ugh.... MOC was so good, but knowing what happened to him after makes this tough. B/C Beanie is nagging an ankle injury this year... MOC and the 02' boys i guess

WR: Well if i could mix and match that would be sweet, but B/c I can't I have to go with 07 WR's, That might be the toughest one to decide on.

TE: 02 group

OL: 02 group

DL: 02 group

DBs and Safeties: Wow, Doss was so good, for now I have to go with 02 group but it's tough

LBs: No offense 02 group, but 07 group is better IMO

Kicker: Nuuuuuugggg no doubt

Punter: Hmmm Groom won the Ray Guy, so he gets a slight edge over Trapasso.

THIS WAS REALLY TOUGH, BOTH TEAMS ARE SCARY SIMILAR.

Yeah... jwins was just mentioning on the other thread about dpeth in general... and that's what really strikes me here...

I mean... at Linebacker... you had Hawk, Carp etc waiting in the wings in 2002... but...

DB's really... tought to lump them together... I mean... yeah.... Doss, Will Allen, Nickey... really nice group...

But... if we're talking about "This point" in '07 vs '02.... We had some problems... I mean, we had to move Chris Gamble to CB.... and... really that hurt our WR experience level quite a bit... so... 2 positions in '02 that were very shaky because of depth issues... Also... keep in mind that Cie Grant wasn't really a known commodity at LB that season.

This year, though... Piles of WR's, Enough DB's... and.... RB depth? The drop off from MoC to Lydell... was... ummm... precipitous... Keep in mind that Clarret was dinged, too... much of the year (knee/stingers)

Also... as far as QB... 6 games into the season... how was CK really viewed at that point... and... how would he have been viewed had Belisari not gotten nabbed for a DUI the year before and CK didn't have the win over Michigan in his pocket?

And... if you want to worry about TB's picks... How about MoC holding on the the rock?

6 Games into '02 we were giving up over 16 points per game.

Kenny Peterson was still a bit of an "underacheiver" and.... this year we just have a lot of guys... if they aren't quite as talented as that group in the 4 starters...

Anyway... I'm sorry about the "point in time" comparison... but... if we look back... we know a lot more about the intangibles of that 2002 club than we do about this one... and... six weeks into '02... we didn't know all that much about them, either...

More worried about the scare vs. UC and struggling against a bad NW club on the road...

The real question is what this '07 teams does when it gets in a real scrap....

Quarterback:
2007 - Todd Boeckman (Todd may not be as smart, but who is?? Todd's much stronger in the pocket and is decent at being mistake free)

Running Back:
2007 - Chris Wells, Maurice Wells, Brandon Saine (I would've said MoC but our backups this year give us better depth)

Fullback:
2002 - Branden Joe, Brandon Schnittker (I like Whaley, but you can't beat those two fullbacks)

Wide Receiver
2007 - Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline, Ray Small (I like Robo over jenkins, and I like the depth no contest here)

Tight End
2002 - Ben Hartsock (Ben was a great combo of reciever and blocker, best we've had so far since tressel)

Offensive Line
2007 - Alex Boone, Steve Rehring, Jim Cordle, Ben Person, Kirk Barton (This line would've gotten MoC a Heisman)

Defensive Line
2002 - Darrion Scott, Tim Anderson, Kenny Peterson, Will Smith (This was the toughest one for me but decided the Tackles of 2002 were too good to pass up, but I believe the 2007 ends are better this year. Will Smith is the best end but the 2007 book end combonation is better than Darrion/Smith)

Linebackers
2007 - Marcus Freeman, James Laurinaitis, Larry Grant ( I like the 2002 linebackers but James and Marcus are both better than our best 2002 backer)

Defensive Backs
2007 - Malcolm Jenkins, Donald Washington, Kurt Coleman, Anderson Russell, Chimdi Chekwa (We have two lock down corners and thats crucial for a defense, no contest for me. The 2002 defense had better safty combo, but Coleman/Russell are still VERY YOUNG so I like the upside. To even add on this even further I think both Jenkins and Washington are better than gamble and to me thats HUGE. I know peole love our safties from 2002 but come on boys the safties for 2007 are still very good, and the drop off from 2007 to 2002 at corner is pretty noticable.)

Kicker
2002 - Mike Nugent (I like Pretorious, but come on Nugent is well NUGENT)

Punter
2002 - Andy Groom ( I like Trapasso's ability to do fakes and such, but Groom had a great leg)

Quarterback:
2007

Running Back:
2002 - Maurice Clarett was just so dominant. He could take over a game and I have yet to see that from Wells. His vision one the best I have seen from a college RB. Had great hands as well. Him alone puts this group over 2007 IMO. But depth is better this year.

Fullback:
2007 - Tyler is a bulldozer, Dionte does not get enough love.

Wide Receiver
2007 - Jenkins was a star, but the way Robiskie is playing is comparable. Small and Hartline are better then Gamble was as a WR.

Tight End
2002 - Based of production. Wish we used Rory more.

Offensive Line
2002 - They also had Nick Mangold and Rob Sims in rotation. Didn't one of them start in NC game?

Defensive Line
2002 - Easy choice here. The pressure they put on Dorsey was amazing(he was sacked only twice before the NC game). Great against run and pass rush. All have started(Peterson @ GB???) in the NFL.

Linebackers
2007 - I would compare this group to Hawk/Carp/Schlegel

Defensive Backs
2007 - Close but I always thought Nickey/Fox were liabilities in the secondary. The 2007 unit seems to have no weakness and is very deep considering we can move the best corner in the nation to safety/nickle to get another great corner in the game.

Kicker
2002 - Mike Nugent

Punter
2002 - Andy Groom

they did but you shouldn't include rotation of players... because The LB's from 2002 also had Carp/Hawk and it becomes unfair to the 2007 group because we can't say how our backups will play 2 years from now. Lets just go with the starting groups because we can atleast compare the two years. Back ups are irrelevant.
