#20 Ohio State 87, Garner Webb 58 (final)

42-25...Halftime

ONLY 2 turnovers.....

Dials 11 points (dominating inside)
Lewis 10 points (getting it done)
Foster 9 points (Mr. Reliable, a little of everything)
Mayes 4 points (solid play)
Butler 3 points (really progressing)
Sullinger 2 points (solid play)
Terwilliger 2 points (showed up on the boards)
Sylvester 1 point (showing good hustle on the boards)

We are shooting 45% from the field while holding them to 32%.
We are shooting just 50% from the line (7-14)
We are shooting 33% from downtown (3-9)

Defense has been the story in the first half, now we have to sustain it for the second half. This is where we have lost focus early this season, lets see how they respond.

76-46....6:00 left...

Dials has sit down for good with 23 points and 9 rebounds unofficially.

The Buckeyes are now just the 4th team in school history to start the season 9-0. Unbelievable.

What a great defensive effort.....Foster has 6 steals tonight.

Buckeyes jump to early lead, cruise past Runnin' Bulldogs
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Terence Dials would not let Ohio State get caught looking ahead.

Dials scored 11 of his 23 points in the first half as Ohio State (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) opened a big lead and cruised to an 87-58 victory over Gardner-Webb.

The Buckeyes (9-0) were playing their final tune-up before Saturday's showdown with Louisiana State of the Southeastern Conference. Ohio State then begins its Big 10 schedule one week later.

A member of the Big South Conference, Gardner-Webb (5-4) kept it close early, drawing within 9-8 on a pair of free throws by Tim Jennings. Dials answered with a dunk at the other end, igniting a 24-4 run that broke open the game.

Dials added eight more points before Matt Sylvester capped the burst on a free throw with 6:23 remaining that made it 33-14.

Ohio State pushed the lead to 42-25 at the half and coasted over the final 20 minutes.

Je'Kel Foster and Ron Lewis scored 14 points apiece for Ohio State, which improved to 15-0 at home against non-conference foes under coach Thad Matta.

Simon Conn had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Gardner-Webb, which shot 36 percent (22-of-61) from the field and committed 20 turnovers.

What I liked:
- Man am I gonna miss Foster next year. This kid can do it all; shoot, play defense, pass the ball, steal...wow
- Terence had a helluva game. He looked hungry for shots and rebounds
- We took Gardner-Webb totally out of their gameplan
- Lewis drawing fouls and playing improved D
- Turnover ratio

What I didn't like:
-
Syl's foul shooting
- Khan (sp) feasting on Twiggy
- JJ didn't have his best game, but no big deal
- We got outrebounded

We totally dominated this game. We took Gardner out of their gameplan and scored easy buckets off great defense. I can't say enough about Foster, and will miss him after this season about as much as losing Redd a number of years back. 9-0 and ready for LSU on New Years Eve. How about starting this non-conference season 10-0? :p

FTM-A = 3-4
OFF = 0
REB = 3

From http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/ncaa/men/recaps/2005/12/28/35436_recap.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio State coach Thad Matta badgered his team for the past few days for not playing hard enough in a narrow win last week.

The Buckeyes got the message.

Terence Dials had his way inside with 23 points and No. 21 Ohio State remained unbeaten with an 87-58 victory over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night.

''I told them after Christmas that we didn't play hard enough against Tennessee State to really evaluate the tape,'' Matta said. ''We're not a good enough basketball team to do that. If we don't play with the intelligence and intensity we have to, there's going to be some long nights for us.''

The Buckeyes (9-0) are one of only 10 Division I teams without a loss. Two more fell by the wayside on Wednesday night. The last time Ohio State won its first nine games was a 17-0 start to open the 1990-91 season.
Dials continued to pull out of an early slump which included games of three and five points. He had 19 points in the 74-65 win over Tennessee State last week.

''I had a little space out there,'' he said. ''I got deeper in the post. Once I get two feet in the paint, I don't have to make moves, I just have to shoot. Then I just took my time and finished.''
He was expected to be challenged physically by the Bulldogs' 6-foot-9 Aussie center, Simon Conn . Instead, Dials continually muscled his way over or around Conn, who led Gardner-Webb (5-4) with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

''That's one of the few games I'll ever have where I'll be quicker than the guy guarding me,'' Dials said with a laugh. ''I tried to use my advantage.''
Je'Kel Foster had 14 points, six steals and three assists to key Ohio State's defense, which forced 20 turnovers. Ron Lewis came off the bench for 14 points.

Ohio State avoided the fate of fellow Big Ten member Minnesota, which lost 73-72 to the Bulldogs at home on Nov. 28. Gardner-Webb also scared defending national champion North Carolina in its opener before losing on a last-second shot, 83-80.

Matta had preached to his team for several days that the Bulldogs were not pushovers.

''Well, the first question you all are going to ask me is, how did we beat Minnesota and play Carolina so close?'' Gardner-Webb coach Rick Scruggs said. ''It's a tale of two teams. Ohio State just took it to us tonight and we didn't have an answer for them. A lot of it had to do with Ohio State.''

Ohio State had just five turnovers and hit 49 percent of its shots from the field while holding Gardner-Webb to 36-percent shooting.

Scruggs said he came away impressed with the Buckeyes.

''I think they're a ton better than Minnesota,'' he said. ''I think they match up well with Carolina, although I'm not sure if Carolina's perimeter players are as strong as Ohio State's.''

The Buckeyes never trailed after Foster hit a 3-pointer barely 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

Holding onto a 9-8 lead, they scored on consecutive trips down the floor on Matt Sylvester passes to Dials, good for a backdoor dunk and a three-point play. That was the start of a burst which saw the Buckeyes go on a 16-2 run. Foster added a 3-pointer and Lewis hit two baskets during the surge as Ohio State built a 25-10 lead.

After Tim Jennings scored for the Bulldogs, the Buckeyes ran off eight more points in a row - the first four by Dials on moves inside.
The Buckeyes led by at least 20 points most of the final 20 minutes after taking a 42-25 lead at the half.

Brian Bender added 12 points and Ricky McPhee had 10 for the Bulldogs.
Ohio State finished with just five turnovers - another product of a hard week of practices.

''Two trademarks I'd like for people to say about our basketball team are that they play hard and with intelligence and they take care of the basketball,'' Matta said.

I don't know how the rest of you guys felt about the game because this was only the second time ive been there all year, but i was making some noise. Me and my friends were getting on Gardner players early and we were trying to get OSU players pumped up during warm ups. I thought the crowd was pretty good tonight. It seemed like high school day because the hole south side of the stadium i think it was was filled with high school students. They definitely were making some noise. I had a blast....just wish i could have those tickets during big ten season because that would be insane.

A very good game once again by the bucks. They totally took a decent team out of their game and destroyed them.

The defense this team plays is relentless.

I think we are really going to enjoy this season.

Agreed! I think I already am enjoying this season! A few quick thoughts.

The computers had us at 12-19 point favorites tonight but these guys weren't cupcakes. They played played NC and Minnesota tough even if they did get beat by 27 at Auburn.

Across the various computer ratings, we should be ranked in the #6-#13 space after this win. The computers aren't as good after ten games as is the case in football because the OOC schedules may inflate some teams ratings (e.g., a higher winning performance because of scheduling easy wins). Our schedule is not highly ranked by most of the computers and that is a reason for caution. Nevertheless, that's far higher than most of us thought and it is a good indication of just how good this team is, after so many games being played.

I didn't hear the game but wonder why they did so much worse than previous games at the foul line. Tired from cranking it on defense? They won't be able to beat good teams shooting less than 80%.

I really like the distribution of the ball and scoring by this team and I like Lewis off the bench.
