I was looking up a Jets player named Ed Bell and stumbled across a newspaper from 1973. Just on that one page not all that long ago...
You could buy a Ford for $47.25/month,
You could get a set of tires for under $100,
Police officers were starting at just over $8,000/year,
48% of NBA draft hopefuls were black.
The paper? The Baltimore Afro-American, established in 1892 and still published (weekly) to this day.
As for Mr. Bell, it appears he was pulled over in Manhattan back then for driving while black, aka a "routine check" according to the report.
