1968-1975 a quick reminder of a golden age

This came up in the countdown thread and i thought I'd post a quickie but a goodie about it. The 8 years between 1968 and 1975 were probably the single best era in OSU history and for those who don't know why I'll give a quick recap and compare it to current times.

The super sophs could very well have gone 30-0 with 3 straight NC's.
1968 10-0 B10 and National Champs. Outscored opponents 323 to 150.
1969 9-1 last game of the season was played for a NC but lost to tsun in the single worst loss in tOSU history imo. Outscored opponents 383-93 that year and never had a close game untill The Game. We beat a huge underdog tsun team and we are B2B NC's. The team could not go to a second consecutive RB at the time.
1970 9-1 B10 champ and some say NC although we lost to Stanford in RB. 4th quarter collapse vs another underdog team costs us NC, I personally never could count this as one. You can't lose the last game and still be NC imo.

Quick reload year
1971 6-4 Super Sophs were gone and AG was a year away. Still took a blind ref to let tsun win The Game. Fuck Darden.

Archie G era
1972 9-2 B10 co champ beat tsun. The MSU loss was a TO fest that we gave to them but the USC loss was an ass beating from a clearly better team.
1973 10-0-1 We were #1 untill the tie vs tsun, the went to Pasadena and rolled USC 42-21. A very convincing argument can be made that this was our best team ever. Outscored opponents 413-64 including 4 shutouts and a 5 game stretch of surrendering a total of 7 points! Fucking Domers were voted #1 because of the tie. Remember that BS anytime you start to feel pity for their second tier asses in the current era.
1974 10-2 B10 co champs. The big upset in east lansing that will never be forgotten. The RB loss to USC was a battle of 2 pretty even teams so you can't say it was a missed NC opportunity year.
1975 11-1 B10 champs. Loss to a UCLA team we pounded in the Rose Bowl earlier that same year costs us a NC. Complete fucking head scratcher.

Overall 8 year record:
74-11-1 .860 win %
6 B10 Championships
5-2-1 vs tsun
6 Rose Bowl appearances
Played for 4 NC's
1 National Championship(some contend 2)
2 Heisman's

Our current 6 year run under JT by comparison:
62-14 .814 win % (can't catch up)
3 B10 titles (can't catch up)
2 NC games (mathmatically able to match but probably unlikely)
5-1 vs tsun (advantage current era)
1 NC (current era could hopefully win this category)
1 Heisman (Wells for Heisman in '08 anyone?)

So the current era can't match up in terms of win % or B10 titles, has to win 1 of the next 2 to claim an edge in The Game, probably wont match in total NC opportunities but hopefully will exceed NC's won. The second Heisman has a fairly reasonable shot as well.

Just another reminder of how you must take advantage of those NC games when you have them in hand and how truely fortunate we are to be living out this current era under JT.

I grew up with those teams of 68 - 75, so I was terribly spoiled in what I expected tOSU football to be from that point on. (As many on here undoubtedly grew up with the 93 - 98 teams)

70 - for some reason we go out there and play zone and they light us up. We had an all All-American defensive backfield, for crying out loud! Let them make plays! Put Plunkett on his ass! Geez!

In 73 scUM was undefeated and I think ranked 4th in the country. We play them at their place to a tie with a QB at less than 100%, then cruch USC in the RB. We should have been NC that year regardless of the tie.

I will still argue with anyone that 73 was the best tOSU team ever and that Randy Gradishar was the best LB we ever had!

75 who knows what happened. I'm sure our guys thought they would roll them like they did in September. Vermeil was a helluva coach, though and got his guys ready.

69 was a case of playing at their place with nothing to play for, Bowl-wise anyway. And Bo bieng new - they were hyped to the gills and we got away from our gameplan in the second half.

I got just about as much satisfaction from the 97 RB as I did from 02 because of the way we won the game. Give up a late TD, and I had the exact same sinking feeling in my gut as I did all those years under Woody we would go out and blow the RB (and the 80 RB under Bruce). "Here we go again!" Then to actually pull it out. That was pretty satisfying.

I too lived through the 1968-1975 era. Ohio State was awesome then. But yes the Buckeye should have had several more National Championships. They say one of the reasons Woody stayed maybe too long was his desire to win another National Championship.

I have said before to some Penn State fans about Ohio State playing for the National Championship, Meaning win the last game and you are National Champions. Speaking of Woody waiting to win another championship dont forget 1979 the Buckeyes played for the National Championship again.

No team was ranked #1 more weeks in the 1970s than Ohio State.

And Penn State during this period had a good record but they played weak schedules until the late 1970s and 1980s. I can recall when the Lions had navy drop off the schedule in 1975 and 1976 and the PSU AD Ed Cjekj sp wanted to upgrade the schedule along with Paterno and thats how the 75 and 76 Ohio State games came about. Also the Lions have never been ranked #1 even for a single week until 1978. So they did play better schedules later in the 1970s and 1980s but in the 1968-75 era the schedules were weak.

Ohio State had some close calls to be champs from 68-75 and had some very very good teams. I remember them all and the games.

40 YEARS: A LOOK BACK AT A POWERHOUSE 1975 OHIO STATE TEAM

Walk back with me in time. We’ll set our time machine for a nice round number and go back 40 years. The year was 1975 and Woody Hayes presided over a powerhouse Ohio State roster.

Many of those Buckeyes are iconic. Even if you’re too young to have seen them play, you’ve heard the names: Archie and Ray Griffin, Cornelius Greene, Pete Johnson, Brian Baschnagel, Tim Fox, Bob Brudzinski, and Tom Skladany. Even Tom Cousineau was on that team, in the two-deep as a freshman.

The 1975 Buckeyes were coming off a 10-2 season the year before, with an inexplicable 16-13 stumble against a seven-win Michigan State team in East Lansing and a one-point loss to No. 3 USC in the Rose Bowl. The MSU loss was wrapped in controversy, as Ohio State’s apparent winning touchdown was ruled to have come after the clock expired. The USC loss in the Rose Bowl was just as heartbreaking, with a winning field goal attempt falling short after a penalty pushed the team back.

With the squad Hayes had returning, there were extremely high hopes for 1975 across Buckeye Nation. Ohio State entered the season ranked fourth in the country, behind just Oklahoma, Alabama, and Michigan, in that order. Alabama then lost on Sept. 6 to unranked Missouri (LOLTide), boosting the Buckeyes to No. 3.
