Bob Knight, 1960 Ohio State team to be recognized at Illinois game
Ohio State will welcome back its 1960 national championship team, including Bobby Knight, when it hosts Illinois on March 5.
It will mark the latest high-profile return for Knight, the former Indiana coach who returned to Assembly Hall on Saturday for the first time in 20 years to a rousing ovation.
“It was hard not to watch it, and a pretty special moment for anybody that’s grown up following college basketball,” Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said shortly after a 70-57 loss at the Kohl Center on Sunday afternoon. “It was a pretty special, touching moment. Glad it happened, from my perspective.”
He’d been back to his alma mater more recently when Knight returned with his teammates for the 50th anniversary of the lone national championship in program history. He also returned in 2011 and was honored by the university individually when the Buckeyes hosted a Lamar team coached by his son, Pat.
In 74 games for the Buckeyes, Knight averaged 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds and played in the shadows of the likes of Jerry Lucas and the late John Havlicek.

They had some lapses in their OOC and conference play, but some of that was injury (Dosunmu) and suspension (Griffin) related (and they tweaked their defense at the beginning of B1G play, massively improving it). We're getting a fully ready and capable Illinois team and I think they are a pretty dangerous match-up for us the way they defend the perimeter and with Cockburn inside.
I think we need to look to draw fouls and our passing needs to be extremely on-point. I'd keep Kaleb on the perimeter a good bit to try to draw Kofi out and all three of CJ, Duane, and Luther are gonna need to play well and smart and in control.

Two-Minute Drill: Chris Holtmann, Seniors Preview Illinois

+ This is a big week for the Buckeyes with games against Illinois and Michigan State.
+ What wins in this league is veteran guys and tough-minded teams. That shows up on the road.
+ Thursday is a special night. It’s senior night with Andre Wesson and Danny Hummer. The 1960 national champs will also be honored and several will be in attendance.
+ Kyle Young is still day to day. His improvement has been incremental. He is anxious to get back and the team is anxious to get him back, but it was a significant sprain. He would add a lot of value against Illinois and Michigan State, but they have to weigh that with the long-term needs of the team this season.
+ EJ Liddell has responded well in the absence of Kyle Young. This is currently the shortest rotation Holtmann has ever had in his career.
+ Alonzo Gaffney is still out with an illness. “I can’t get into specifics on that.” He is still a part of the program.
+ Ibrahima Diallo could see time this week.
+ Ohio State is playing two of the better teams in the country this week. “There is never a break.” There will be no breaks in the postseason either. That’s the reality. You accept that and you embrace it.
+ Senior night festivities will take place after the game where players will address the crowd.
+ Playing against two teams vying for a conference crown means they have to match the opposing intensity. You also want to be playing as well as you can at the end of the season. “Our deal is to continue to try to build the momentum.” These are the games you want to be in.
+ CJ Walker has taken a step up in leadership and ownership. “He’s a tremendous kid. He’s going to be a really good coach.” He has settled into his role right now. Holtmann maybe understood some of the transition that was going to take place for Walker and how difficult it actually was.
+ Kaleb Wesson isn’t happy with how he is finishing, but Holtmann stressed how well he is playing defensively and his shooting outside has been effective as well.
+ Look at Andre Wesson’s stats over the years and you’ll see a guy who has worked hard to become a complete and efficient wing. When Holtmann recruited him at Butler, his hope was that he would end up being the player he’s become.
+ He’s enjoyed interacting with the members of the 1960 national championship team. “It’s been what you’d expect.” The stories are great. They are the lone national champs here, so he is trying to glean what he can. He hasn’t had any interactions with Bobby Knight in the past five or so years.
+ When Holtmann got the job at OSU, he showed Andre Wesson several of the texts that Wesson never responded to when Butler was recruiting him.
+ As a coach, you always feel bad for not being able to play walk-ons because those are some of the most passionate guys in the entire program.
+ Illinois is much different defensively than last year, but very similar on offense. They were unique defensively in the past, but they have changed to a more conventional defensive style. They have good defensive players with length. They protect the rim and they don’t foul.
+ Duane Washington’s defense is “getting there.” He has taken ownership of improving and they have seen that happen. This is going to be a big week for him to continue that improvement.
+ Illinois is a very good road team. Tough minded. They went through a lot last year and they are mostly all back.

+ It’s going to be bittersweet on Senior Night. His journey here is coming to an end. “It’s going to be special for sure.”

+ It’s a dream come true to have been able to be a Buckeye and have his dad at his games. “To make my dad proud is probably my greatest accomplishment.”
+ Playing with Kaleb has been something he’ll never forget. The last game with Kaleb will be even more special than Senior Night.

THE BULLY'S NEXT VICTIM. Kaleb "The Bully" Wesson finally gets to pick on someone who can presumably stand up for himself tonight when he takes on 7-foot, 290-pound Kofi Cockburn, which is almost certainly the largest human he's ever faced on a basketball court.
If Mark Turgeon's analysis is to be believed, I look forward to watching Kaleb push him around like a shopping cart tonight.
Ohio State is a 6.5-point favorite tonight. That might seem high, but it won't when the Buckeyes win by 13.
GET YOUR POPCORN READY. Basketball game aside, tonight's coverage of the Ohio State vs. Illinois game has the potential to get extremely interesting given a particular individual in attendance and the fellow calling the game.
If you have no idea why that's a big deal, I sincerely envy your lack of onlineness.
You Dan Dakich and Bob Knight have a long, long history together with Dakich both playing and coaching under Knight for 16 years. Now, they pretty publicly don't get along at all.
I have a fairly firm rule against picking sides in a blood feud, but you better believe I'm gonna tune in to witness any and all fireworks.
Because if there's anything Dan Dakich does terribly, it's keeping his thoughts to himself, which could pose problematic when those thoughts are inflammatory towards a sentient powder keg.

Ohio State hoops set to host Illinois
The Buckeyes are rolling lately, and now in basketball’s most important month, they face another tough test.
During No. 19 Ohio State’s last win, a double-digit win over hated rival Michigan inside a sold-out arena, the Buckeyes were able to flash what could be coming in both the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes have now won eight of their last 10. They’re elevating their level of play at the most important time. Now, they’ll welcome No. 23 Illinois on Thursday night with a chance to defeat their third ranked opponent in their last four games.
After a January schedule that tripped the Buckeyes up, Ohio State found a way back in business in February and carried momentum into the first tough challenge of March. It gave them an even bigger confidence boost than they previously had, and it will need to continue Thursday night.
Ohio State is finding its rhythm at the right time. The next challenge will tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
