Some may remember this story:

SI.com - Writers - Arash Markazi: Playing Beirut with Greg Oden - Monday August 27, 2007 8:32PM

Oden never stops having fun. When he finishes doing his dances he heads over to the air hockey table in the corner of the studio and challenges Isaiah Renfro, a 10-year-old boy who is wearing Oden's jersey. Up until now, Renfro has been sitting and watching Oden with his mom, awe-struck at the sight of his favorite player. Now it's hard to tell which one is the child as they pick up their mallets. "You're really making me feel good about myself, little man," says Oden as he starts dancing after scoring a goal. "You better come harder than that."

As Renfro laughs, he quickly scores a goal. Oden eventually takes the game and throws his hands in the air after he wins, runs around the studio, knocks over a chair and starts dancing in front of Renfro. "I'm sorry I had to beat you, little man," he says before jokingly turning to the mother. "I'm sorry I had to beat your son like that."

Renfro's mother, Chieko Woods, simply smiles as Oden continues playing with her son, challenging him to a game of one-on-one on the nearby court and swatting away his shots. "No sympathy," he says jokingly. "No sympathy, little man."

"I thought maybe I'd surprise [my son] and he'd get an autograph," says Woods. "I never thought he'd become friends with his hero, but [Oden'] like a kid, a really big kid."

Isaiah's mother just showed me a dvd of his 10-yr old pee-wee football highlights, and the kid is nasty. He's a dual-threat quarterback with a huge, accurate arm for a 10-year old. Obviously still very young, he was clearly a much better athlete than the kids of his own age group. He is also a standout basketball player - his travel team was nationally ranked last season.

Since it is never too early to have a kid on the Buckeye radar, I thought I'd start his thread now.

Best part? He's a big Buckeye fan with family ties to the state of Ohio.

All jokes aside, he asked me whether or not I thought Pryor would start next year, and then took a print-out of the Scout commit list for tOSU to start YouTube-ing highlight film. Not bad for 11.

Sorry, I don't have access to the 40 time. It was probably hand-timed anyway, which means its not worth a darn.

Prep football: Canyon frosh needs depth

Cowboys thin at some positions

The Canyon High freshman football team is thin at several positions heading into the season.

Therefore, the focus for new head coach Frank Nelson has been building depth.

"Running back and quarterback, our depth needs to improve there," Nelson said. "We also need it at a couple of the offensive line positions. Offensive tackles, we need to improve our depth there."

That’s not to say, however, that there’s no talent at the top of the depth chart. Isaiah Renfro is a skilled, mobile quarterback according to Nelson, while Austin Barry is solid at the running back position.

After Barry, however, Nelson said the back-up tailbacks are speedy but small.

Jordan Sykes and Tristan Harris-Holden will anchor the offensive line, which Nelson said is an area of concern at the lower levels.

"I find the most inexperience you have is on your line, because a lot of the kids are too big to have played youth football," he said.

On the defensive line, Daniel Tyus and Scott Davis will lead the group, while Andre Banister will line up at both safety and slot back on offense. Nelson also said Kerollos Sarag will be a key contributor on defense, and Shane Stach is the team’s top cornerback.

"On defense, the biggest thing we need is nose guard, and depth-wise, it's at defensive end," Nelson said. "The first group is not too bad, but the depth needs to get better there."

Canyon's junior varsity and freshman programs have helped build the foundation for the varsity team, which stands a good chance of recapturing the Foothill League title this season.

Nelson is focused on continuing that trend and getting his own squad ready for league play.

"We've got a lot of learning to do, but I think we’ll be ready for the Foothill League and we’ll be competitive," he said.
