Mighty Middie: Vincent Edwards? lone scholarship offer so far is from UD, but the son of former Wright State star Bill Edwards is drawing high-major interest. He plans to make an unofficial visit to Michigan and likely one to Ohio State this fall.

Edwards said his dream school is Kentucky (no word from the Wildcats yet). But most players remember their first scholarship the way they do their first kiss, and the 6-6 wing is no different.

?I was kind of shocked, but I felt pretty good inside ... I?m pretty sure I?ll be staying in touch with Dayton,? he said.

He started on the varsity as a freshman last season, averaging eight points.

?He?s extremely gifted as a player,? first-year Middletown coach Josh Andrews said. ?Obviously, he has great genes and has had a basketball in his hands, it sounds like, since he came out of the womb.

?He?s an unselfish player, wants to win. He?s self-motivated. To be as young as he is and have the maturity and basketball mind that he does may be the most impressive thing about him.?

The Vince Edwards saga
Feb. 27, 2012 | Written by Jeff Washburn |

The world of social media and college basketball recruiting has become an interesting marriage, to say the least.

The most recent example involves Vince Edwards, an excellent sophomore at Middletown, Ohio. On Saturday, Edwards? mother changed her Twitter account name to ?fiutureboilermom.? Then later Saturday night, Edwards sent a Tweet that said, ?I have some good news for coach Micah Shrew,? who obviously is Purdue assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry.

I was in my hotel room in Ann Arbor writing a postgame blog when I started getting all kinds of Tweets from Purdue fans who were speculating that the young man was about to give Purdue a verbal.

However, after the whole saga this spring and summer involving Derek Willis, I was somewhat skeptical. It?s only my opinion, but after a conversation last summer with Robbie Hummel, I?m convinced kis should wait until after their junior year in high school to make that decision.

Edwards is a sophomore who still has two MORE years of high school basketball to play.

Obviously, Edwards and his mom have been bombarded with Tweets of interest in the past two days, because this morning, Vince Edwards issued a statement via his Twitter account:

?Just to set the record straight, I have not made a commit to anywhere. Don?t get me wrong, I like Purdue, but all of this is out of hand and too much.

?If I make a commitment, I will let you guys know, but I have not made a commitment to Purdue. Purdue is a great school, don?t get me wrong, but I?m still young and have not made a commitment yet. This is getting way out of hand.?

Middletown?s Vincent Edwards, a 6-7 sophomore forward, has become one of the most highly recruited players in southwest Ohio in the 2014 class.

Michigan coach John Beilein watched him in an open gym Tuesday. Tennessee invited him down for an unofficial visit. And he has scholarship offers from Dayton, Xavier and Purdue.

He visited the Flyers when they beat nationally ranked Alabama last season and could see himself fitting in at UD.

?Dayton is close to home. It feels like home as soon as you step in (the arena). It?s almost a sellout crowd every night. Dayton is a good place,? he said.

The son of former Wright State star Bill Edwards grew an inch during the season and is looking to add some beef to his 210-pound frame.

?Getting quicker and stronger ? that?s my main two goals,? he said. ?Hopefully, I can keep lifting and put on my weight. That will help me out.?
