Analysts Continue To Hail Victor

July 31, 2012
As Ohio State and other major college programs look for immediate help and chase seniors-to-be, they also have an eye toward the younger standouts on display at various summer camps.

One of them is Craig Victor, a 6-8, 205-pound power forward from New Orleans and one of the top prospects in the 2014 class.

The affable Victor is also a fierce competitor, and he?s followed up a breakout sophomore season at St. Augustine High School with a terrific summer in which he?s tangled ? and held his own ? with many of the top senior post players in the country.

One such outing came in early July at the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis as he battled top 2013 prospect Chris Walker. Victor and has New Orleans Elite squad came up short but he clearly proved he belongs on the same court with the top players and a first-rate AAU outfit like Walker?s Florida Elite.

?I do real well against guys like him,? Victor said moments after the high-profile game at North Central High School with OSU head coach Thad Matta, assistant Jeff Boals and many other coaches in the building. ?I?ll tell you no lies, man, I?ll go at anybody, from wing positions to down low. From Ricardo Gathers from last year, Jabari Parker, and this year it?s guys like Chris Walker. It?s not really a big deal to me, man. Any day, any time.?

A reporter then asked him if Ohio State also was somewhere in the mix.

?Ohio State; yes, sir,? he said. ?I talk to them a lot, too. Coach (Dave) Dickerson and those guys, they came down to the Final Four and I watched that game. It was a good look. I like how they play, man. They were my favorite to win it all. They just came up short.?

The young forward added that he likes the style of Matta and that Dickerson ? a trusted assistant and former head coach of Tulane in Victor?s hometown of New Orleans ? is among the aggressive suitors.

?Everybody is calling and texting,? he said. ?Now it?s on another level. I?ve been hearing from some of them every day. UConn especially. I hear from them a lot. Kentucky, Baylor. Ohio State, I hear from them every now and then.?

Kentucky Wildcats' basketball 'America's team,' Craig Victor says

According to New Orleans power forward Craig Victor, one college stands out as an ideal option for any top-level basketball prospect.

?You know how the Cowboys are America?s football team?? he said Friday at the NBPA Top 100 camp. ?I would say Kentucky is America?s team for all high school players. That?s the dream to play at Kentucky. I believe that.?

Could the dream of playing at Kentucky become a reality for Victor, the nation?s No. 19 prospect by Scout.com?

He said Kentucky, Ohio State, LSU, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Florida are recruiting him the hardest. UK is the only one of those that has not made an offer, but Victor is willing to wait to see if one materializes.

Arizona making strong push for top-40 prospect Craig Victor
By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer
June 28, 2013

Transfers are the big ?epidemic? in college basketball these days, with upwards of 450 players from around the country looking to move to a different school this offseason. (It's not really an epidemic, but that's for another day.)

For a coach recruiting Craig Victor, though, that's likely not something he will have to worry about.

In fact, Victor calls it ?nonsense.?
Kentucky could track Victor in the summer. (Kelly Kline/Under Armour)
Kentucky could track Victor in July. (Kelly Kline/Under Armour)

?I'm looking for four things in a school,? he said. ?Family oriented. Somebody that's going to compete for a national championship. A coach that I can go to when I'm having problems so I don't have to go back home, because that's just nonsense. You know, a coach I can rely on. And a strong fan base.?

Victor, a 6-foot-8 power forward from New Orleans, is ranked No. 24 in the 247 Sports Composite for the class of 2014. He has a very good offensive game around the basket, whether facing up from the midrange or elbow, or playing with his back to the basket down low. He's constantly making himself available for entry passes, and he's also solid on the glass.

One of the top five power forwards in the class, Victor could have his choice of colleges when he makes his decision.

Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Arizona, LSU, Kansas, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, Connecticut, UCLA are all coming after him, with Kentucky also very interested despite not offering just yet.

Victor's top five at this point? Ohio State, Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona and LSU.

?I love those schools,? Victor said.

One school that looks to have plenty of momentum right now is Arizona. Victor has unofficially visited the campus and likes what the Wildcats have to offer.

?I love it,? he said. ?A lot.?

Another good sign for the Wildcats? When asked which classmates he enjoys playing alongside, Victor specified Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Stanley Johnson. Jackson-Cartwright is already committed to Arizona, and the Wildcats are also considered a favorite for Johnson.

Jackson-Cartwright was on the same team as Victor at the recent NBPA Top 100 camp and made his pitch throughout the weekend.

?He's just saying it would be a good move,? Victor said. ?He's a great point guard, and a guy like me needs a great passer. Somebody that I can rely on to get me the ball.?

While Victor isn't ready to make a commitment to any one school just yet, don't expect him to waver once he makes his decision. He's not the transferring type.

That would be nonsense.
