Ohio State offers Winter Park DE Trent Harris, changing his commitment plans

Winter Park defensive end Trent Harris was all set to make his college choice next week. He was down to Florida, Florida State and Georgia and pretty comfortable with his final three schools.

Urban Meyer called today. That tends to change things.

Ohio State came in with Harris? 17th offer on Monday and it threw a giant wrench into the plans he had laid out for next Thursday (May 23). He was going to announce his decision after the Wildcats? spring game.

Not any more.

?Yeah, that changes everything. I?m going to try my best to get up there (Ohio State) for a visit,? said Harris (6-foot-2, 231 pounds), the second Central Florida player in the past week to be offered by the Buckeyes, joining Apopka quarterback Zack Darlington. ?I know Urban Meyer is a good coach and a good man ? and I like that.?

?I?m just truly blessed and humbled. It?s just crazy with all of this happening but I guess it?s all becoming a reality. Every time I see the phone ring, something else pops up. It?s just a great experience.?

Harris has not yet spoken with Meyer, who called Winter Park assistant coach Sinclair Brown to tell him of the news. Brown also talked to Buckeyes linebackers coach Mike Vrabel.

"No, he didn?t see it coming ... they came in after everybody else," Brown said of Harris' reaction. "I talked to Coach Meyer and he said Trent's very explosive off the ball, and has long arms and he said he sees him as a stand-up D-end or even with his hand in the dirt. He said he is definitely high on their board and they are going to attack and recruit him hard.

"He said to make sure he comes up to campus this summer and sees everything."

What makes the offer more interesting is that Harris is a die-hard Florida Gators' fan, and Meyer's past with Florida could make a big difference in the recruitment of Harris.

"It will play a huge role," Sinclair said.

Harris, currently the No. 3 player in the Sentinel's 2014 Central Florida Super60, had 50 tackles last season, as well as 11 sacks.

John Simon is 6'1".

And hes in the nfl as a guy with no set position either. Not exactly what one wants to be at the professional level...
But wasn't Dwight freeney around 6'2?

But if Harris has enough speed on the edge he'd be fine in college.

The kid's not even in his senior year of his school yet and you're already evaluating his NFL position?

Not at all. I was evaluating Simons when the previous poster mentioned height.
And just noting that freeney was the same height

Winter Park defensive end Trent Harris has released his top six choices from his list of 22 scholarship offers and he has Florida at the top of the list.

Harris? final six teams are Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State and Vanderbilt and his list is in no particular order with the exception of Florida, which is atop all the rest.

?Florida was my dream school growing up and it?s not too far from home and I like the environment and coaches,? Harris said.

He is unsure of when he wants to make his commitment, although he has said before that he?d like to do it before his senior season begins. Harris has stil yet to visit Georgia, Ohio State and Vanderbilt.

Trent Harris down to Florida, Miami, Ohio State; Decision live Monday at noon
Winter Park defensive end will make his college commitment public via Sentinel webcast
Chris Hays | Florida Recruiting Orlando Sentinel
July 27, 2013

Winter Park defensive end Trent Harris has narrowed his list of 22 college football scholarship offers to three finalists with Florida, Miami and Ohio State still in the hunt.

The 6-foot-2, 231-pound Harris will announce his decision Monday at noon via The Orlando Sentinel?s live YouTube web stream via this link.

Like most college football prospects, Harris said the most difficult part of narrowing his list was calling those coaches from the schools that did not make the cut. Among the other schools offering Harris were Florida State, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Boston College, to which teammate WR Gabe McClary committed earlier this summer.

?Oh man, it was extremely difficult,? Harris said of narrowing the list, ?and calling the other coaches and letting them know, that was the hardest part. I just wanted to thank every coach that gave me the opportunity to come play at their school, and let them know I appreciated it.

?I only made a few calls to the coaches who kept in touch with me the most, and I just had to tell them all, ?Thank.? ?

Harris, the No. 5-ranked player in the Sentinel's 2014 Central Florida Super60 and the No. 51 player in the Sentinel's 2014 Florida Top 100, talked about each of his three finalists:

Florida: ?It?s always been my favorite school and all of the coaches are down-to-earth. It?s a great school for education and it?s not too far from home.?

Miami: ?It?s a beautiful campus and the coaching staff, they?re really funny but at the same time, very energetic and very serious about football and winning. They have a great strength program to get the players in shape and get me where I need to be , and the school is great for education, as well.?

Ohio State: ?Of course they have Coach Urban Meyer there, and Ohio State has a great tradition. Plus Mike Vrabel is the position coach and he?s just out of the NFL and he can teach me the things I need to know to get there, too.?

It?s been a bit of a trying process for Harris, who said his main support for his decision-making came from former Winter Park assistant coach Sinclair Brown.

?He helped me through the whole recruiting process and making the right decision. I was in contact with him a lot in the end through my mom,? Harris said. ?I also have gotten a lot of support from Coach [Ben] St. Clair [defensive line], Coach [Craig] Russell [linebackers] and coach [Tim] Shifflet [head coach], and, of course, my mom and dad.?

As a junior at Winter Park, Harris had 50 tackles and 11 sacks from his defensive end position.
