Geno Thorpe, one of the WPIAL's up-and-coming basketball stars, left Shady Side Academy and returned to Shaler.
A 6-foot-3 rising sophomore, Thorpe averaged 15.6 points per game during his one year at the private school in Fox Chapel.
"Some things didn't work out at Shady Side Academy for me and my family," Thorpe said. "We just decided that Shaler was a better choice."
Thorpe, a guard, attended the Hoop Group Elite camp this week at Albright College in Reading, a basketball clinic that draws some of the country's best high school players.
He said he has drawn interest from college programs, including Pitt, Ohio State, Louisville, Arizona, Temple and George Washington. Thorpe received his first formal scholarship offer two weeks ago from Rutgers and Mike Rice, the former Robert Morris coach.
"Me and Mike Rice were real cool with one another," Thorpe said. "I'd been to some of his camps. It felt good to get that first offer."
His arrival should be a boost for Shaler, which was 11-11 last season and reached the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.
"I'm looking forward to Quad-A competition," Thorpe said.
Thorpe also played football at Shady Side but will play only basketball at Shaler.
"I knew basketball was where I was headed," said Thorpe, who teamed with fellow freshman Michael Young to help Shady Side reach the WPIAL Class AA basketball semifinals.
"I liked Shady Side," Thorpe said, "but Shaler was home."

?[I?m] probably a favorite of the Big Ten. Ohio State is where I?d want to end up, but I like the Big East too,? stated Thorpe.
Thorpe is planning to visit the Buckeyes at the end of the month. He recently had the opportunity to visit Rutgers and has a previous relationship with new head coach Mike Rice who was previously at Robert Morris.
