BN$--OL Hears He Is Top OSU Target

Sam says Coach Warinner told him he is close to the top of the recruiting board. He will camp this weekend to earn an offer and grew up as a Buckeye fan.

Pretty athletic. Seems to stand straight up when pass-blocking. I'm not the best OL talent evaluator, so I'll defer to someone more adept.

As has been said when people worry about all of the early OL commits going to UM, offensive line is one of the hardest positions to evaluate and project- the further out they are from stepping on campus the harder it is (see: Logan Tulley-Tillman).

I hate to be that guy, but trust the coaches. I have a feeling the recruiting board is going to change drastically following camps this summer after they are able to evaluate kids in-person, particularly along the offensive line and at linebacker.

Undoubtedly talented and athletic, but extremely raw. I also see some flashes of a mean streak but I really would want to see him in person to see the consistency. I like his feet in pass pro and he keeps the defenders at bay with those long arms (love the frame obviously). Needs to work on getting engaged at the second level...he washes down well but seems a little lost in space. Overall, I think he looks like a project but one that is likely worth taking with the state of our OL recruiting (pending camp evaluation to see him in person). Honestly, Meadows has a very similar skill set/upside, so it will be interesting to see how they stack up at camp.

I coached against him for the past two years. He is athletic and has the body that can be molded by a college strength and conditioning coach. But, he was not overly impressive last year from what I saw. Most of his highlights are against poor competition (Wickliffe, Chardon, etc.) It appears that he had a good game against Chagrin Falls, which is a good opponent. I must admit, his second highlight in the film was against our best DL last year. Gave me a chuckle watching it on here.

Sam Coverdale could write his own ticket right now to some of the more-prestigious schools of higher learning in this country: Stanford, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Virginia, Harvard, Yale, Cornell. They all want him to pursue football and his education. He is considered to be an all-around achiever on the elite level.

?Yeah, I could end up really in almost any region of the country if that?s the way I go,? said Coverdale, who also has offers from Arizona State and Boston College.

But this morning, the offensive lineman from Chagrin Falls Kenston is headed down I-71 to Ohio State to take part in the first session of coach Urban Meyer?s first Buckeyes summer camp. He?s not bringing a tent or a blanket. He?s bringing his cleats.

The first day is called an advanced camp, and for $75 each, it gives seniors-to-be such as Coverdale a chance to show their skills in front of scores of college coaches, especially Ohio State assistants and Meyer. Coverdale has yet to receive a scholarship offer from OSU.

?My mission statement? I?m coming down there to compete and, hopefully, earn a scholarship,? Coverdale said.
However, to deny the allure of possibly playing for the Buckeyes and Meyer would not be truthful, Coverdale said.

“The appeal of Ohio State is it’s a top-tier football team,” said Coverdale, pointing out that most of his offers are from programs that don’t quite match up to that. “Ohio State is a team that has the potential to go and contend for a national championship every year.

“And I grew up an Ohio State fan, and to go to my in-state school and play for one of the top programs in the country, that would be real exciting.”
