CJ linebacker, fullback to showcase versatility

DAYTON - Throughout pee wee football, Darrien Howard bulged past the weight limit rule to run the ball. Instead, he diversified.

"I made him learn every position," said Howard's father, Darrell, of the Chaminade Julienne High School junior. "He learned how to play center, guard, tackle, defensive end, defensive tackle, nose guard. That made him a well-rounded player."

Preparing for his third varsity season that begins later this week, the linebacker and fullback could show off even more skills. Howard will join several teammates in playing stints on both offense and defense as the Eagles try to rebound from a disappointing 4-6 season with first-year coach Marcus Colvin, who was promoted from assistant coach.

"He's also a heck of a long-snapper," Colvin said. "Just little things you don?t notice about some players. He's a heck of a linebacker, can carry the ball, he's a heck of a blocker. He's also one of our best pass-catchers, in terms of hands."

At 6 feet 2 and 250 pounds, Howard started as a freshman. He holds a scholarship offer from Cincinnati and drew increased recruiting interest while attending several camps this summer.

By Helmholdt...visiting MSU on 9/10 and plans to go to a couple OSU games...UC has offered...Nebraska is also recruiting him...16 tackles, 2 FRs and an INT in his first game this year.

Based on the measurables and the first game numbers, it's impossible not to get excited about this recruit.

Trotwood sweeps D-II district player of the year honors

Area player of the year sweeps were the norm in four of the six divisions. QB Luke Creditt (Waynesville) and linebacker Darrien Howard (Chaminade Julienne) were the top D-IV players. QB Nick Campbell (Versailles) and lineman Maverick Long (Anna) were the D-V players of the year, as were QB Brian Kelly (Springfield Catholic Central) and linebacker Caleb Ranley (Fort Loramie) in D-VI.

Coach Meyer conversation with Howard

4* LB Darrien Howard visited the Buckeyes for Junior Day on 2/12/2012 and was one of the few that met Coach Urban Meyer for 1 on 1.

According to Howard, Meyer told the Linebacker he just recently saw his film a few days ago and was impressed. Said the kid hits like a brick wall and covers sideline to sideline well.

Coach Urban Meyer told Howard he wants him to be a Buckeye but will continue to learn more about him before a offer is given.
Coach Meyer told the 6'2 250lbs. LB to continue his speed training and plan to be back to visit the Buckeyes in the spring and for summer camp.
