'13 IN SG V.J. Beachem (Notre Dame Verbal)

Fort Wayne Junior V.J. Beachem Is High On Gophers' Radar Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Monter August 11, 2011

Victor ?V.J.? Beachem, a 6-foot-7 rising junior forward, is one of the Midwest?s top players in the Class of 2013. He played for the Eric Gordon All Stars this summer and spring and drew the attention of Minnesota head coach Vince Taylor. Beachem has attracted offers from several Midwest teams, including Minnesota and is one of their biggest recruiting targets in the Class of 2013. GopherHole.com caught up with Beachem to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Beachem, who played last season at Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Harding has already earned scholarship offers from Purdue (his mother?s alma mater), Butler, Notre Dame and Minnesota. Beachem has a tie to Minnesota as his mother?s cousin was former Golden Gopher Nate Tubbs.

Beachem comes from a basketball family. His father, Victor Beachem played at Fort Wayne Elmhurst and then at Cisco (TX) College and Cincinnati Tech (which is known now as Cincinnati State).

GopherHole.com caught up with Beachem to learn the latest on his son?s recruitment.

GH: What are you hearing from Minnesota?

VB: I really like those guys. They can see me being a ?Tayshaun Prince? type of player with Coach Smith.

GH: What type of things have you been working on to improve yourself as a player?

VB: Definitely, hitting the glass harder and playing better defense

GH: You had a really good opening game in Las Vegas against the Wisconsin Playground Warriors?

VB: I had a pretty good game. I had around 21 points and we won by one point. It was a good game. It was real tough. A dog fight for us.

GH: You played in a very tough pool in Las Vegas, facing the Wisconsin Playground Warriors with Bronson Koenig, Ohio Basketball Club, who had won the 15-anmd-under division in the Best of The Summer last July and New Heights, which made to the adidas Invitational finals this year and finished 3-0. You had to be proud of your team against such tough competition?

VB: We beat New Heights down in Indianapolis the first time, so the second time, we knew that they were going to come at us hard and we were able to win that game. We beat Wisconsin and they were tough. They run their stuff really good and we were able to gut out a win against Ohio Basketball Club.

GH: What other schools are you hearing from?

VB: Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Georgetown, Stanford, Purdue, Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati, Tennessee and Florida.

Recruiting: New Haven 6-7 forward Beachem nears decision
Oct. 7, 2011
Written by
Kyle Neddenriep

A college decision could be coming soon for one of the top junior high school basketball players in the state.

New Haven 6-7 forward V.J. Beachem, ranked No. 73 in his class nationally by Rivals.com, may make a commitment before the beginning of the season, which is about six weeks away.

"He's been hinting around about getting it done sometime before the beginning of the season," said his father, Victor Beachem. "He's talked about getting it done before the end of the season, but I think he may want to do it before."

Victor Beachem said coaches from a number of schools, including Butler, Georgetown, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame and Stanford, have visited open gyms at New Haven in recent weeks. Beachem recently picked up scholarship offers from Iowa and Minnesota. He also has an offer from Notre Dame and hopes to make an unofficial visit to South Bend on Oct. 22, when the Irish host USC in football.

The elder Beachem said there are no "leaders" at this point, but when asked about Notre Dame, he said his son "feels comfortable" with the program.

"He likes them a lot and they've been on him the longest and hardest for the last three years," Victor Beachem said. "(V.J.) said that distance from home really isn't a factor when we've talked about it from time to time. He just wants to find the best school."

The elder Beachem said there are preliminary plans to make a visit to Michigan State, though a date has not yet been set.

"All of the attention (from schools) has really been a blessing," he said. "It just goes to show all the hard work has paid off."

Beachem to play for Notre Dame
New Haven star believes Irish are 'perfect fit'
By Tom Davis
of The News-Sentinel

Notre Dame men?s basketball coach Mike Brey has made it a priority to reach out to a select type of Indiana high school players and let them know that for the elite student-athletes his program is a fine choice.

V.J. Beachem happens to fit that mold perfectly. That is why the New Haven High School junior verbally committed on Sunday afternoon to play for the Fighting Irish beginning in the fall of 2013.

?Number one I wanted to play close to home,? Beachem said. ?Then playing in the Big East and the power of a Notre Dame degree were factors in my decision.?

Beachem plans to study a business-related field once in South Bend and he is looking forward to the challenge of succeeding both in the classroom, as well as on the basketball court.

?I definitely view it as a challenge, both on and off of the court? Beachem said. ?But I?m ready for it all.?
