Beachem another Purdue target in 2013 class
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

With its 2012 class possibly already in place (Fort Wayne South's Raphael Davis, Dublin, Ohio's Kyle Molock and Jay Simpson of Champaign, Ill.), Purdue appears to be making some strides with some of the top in-state players in the 2013 class.

V.J. Beachem, a 6-5 shooting guard from Fort Wayne Harding, said he recently picked up a scholarship offer from Purdue on an unofficial visit.

"My mom (attended) Purdue and she came with me," Beachem said. "I liked it a lot. We weren't able to walk around too much because of the construction, but we drove around saw a lot of the campus. I like Purdue. I could see myself playing there one day."

Beachem has also visited Indiana, Ohio State and Xavier and said Illinois and Notre Dame are also recruiting him. Although he's rail thin and weighs just 160 pounds, coaches at major Division I programs see his potential bubbling at the surface.

Recruiting 101: Beachem Holds High Major Offer
By Joey E on July 21, 2010

V.J. Beachem is a 6?6 rising sophomore wing currently playing AAU basketball with All-Ohio Red. During the high school season, V.J. plays for Paul Harding High School in Fort Wayne, and averaged 12 points per game as a freshman in 2009-2010.

?AAU has been going really well with All-Ohio Red,? Beachem said. ?We went down to Little Rock, Arkansas for AAU Nationals, and it was a really fun experience. We came in second place down there.?

V.J. most likely projects as a small forward or a big shooting guard.

?I think my strengths are my ability to shoot, rebound, and handle the ball,? he said. ?I?ve also got really good length.?

Beachem is quick to note though that his game has room to improve.

?My weakness right now are my strength and my defense,? said Beachem. ?I?m working really hard to improve on my weaknesses and build on my strengths.?

Beachem?s talents on the court have caused College coaches to take notice, earning interest from all over the country.

?Purdue, Ohio State, Indiana, Xavier, Notre Dame, Illinois, Florida, and Syracuse are the schools recruiting me,? V.J. said. ?Purdue is the only school to offer so far.?

It?s early in the process, and Beachem doesn?t yet have a leader or favorite, and isn?t in a rush to make a decision.

?Right now I?m not really leading towards any schools or coaches,? he said. ?Right now I would like to make my decision before my junior season.?

So far V.J. has taken visits to Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State, and Xavier.

V.J. Beachem, Ft. Wayne Harding (IN): Beachem joined up with the Eric Gordon 15u team this weekend. Beachem is well known for having a boatload of potential, and this weekend he showed off many of his versatile skills. At 6?6 he?s got good size for a wing, and also has the length that lets him play big down low. He?s got so many ways to impact the game, and showed off a little bit of everything this weekend. He?s got feathery touch on his shot, good control of the ball off the bounce, great athleticism, length, and nice lateral quickness. This weekend he knocked down some jumpers, threw down acrobatic dunks, made his presence felt on the glass, and disrupted opponents on defense. He definitely needs to get stronger and play with more overall consistency, but there is no denying his talent and upside.

Beachem may be somebody not many people have heard of, but with an offer from Purdue and unofficial visits to Indiana, Xavier, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and Notre Dame scheduled, that may soon change.

?It is a challenge,? Beachem said of playing in the SAC. ?I wanted to be more physical over the summer and play better defense, hopefully everything else can fall into place.

?You always want to go out there and prove that you are the best. Here in Fort Wayne it is a lot of other guys trying to do the same.?

So, who?s next in the 2013 class? Fort Wayne Harding?s V.J. Beachem, a 6-6 wing, has an offer from Purdue. But his father, Victor Beachem, said Smotherman?s commitment won?t impact his son moving his timeline forward.

?We were actually just talking about that,? the elder Beachem said Wednesday. ?There are so many guys committing early it seems like. But I think V.J. is pretty content to sit back and wait.?

Though Purdue is his only offer, Beachem said Ohio State assistant Brandon Miller was at practice Wednesday and Notre Dame visited earlier in the week. Michigan and Michigan State have also shown interest, and Beachem attended Butler?s game earlier this season against Stanford.

?(V.J.) just turned 16 a month ago yesterday so we?re still taking our time,? Victor said. ?I don?t think he has a need to rush.?

Beachem is averaging about 20 points a game for Class 3A Harding, which is 7-9. The Hawks upset Fort Wayne Northrop (which features Scott and his twin brother Brenton), 72-64 last week. Beachem had seven 3-pointers and 33 points in that game.

?He plays most the ?2? or ?3? and posts up smaller players when he has that matchup,? Victor Beachem said.

Harding will close at the end of the school year. Victor Beachem said it remains undetermined where V.J. will attend school next year.

a pair of uncommitted wings (V.J. Beachem and Zak Irvin) brought out several coaches, including Stevens, Crean, Matt Painter (Purdue), Thad Matta (Ohio State), Izzo and Jamie Dixon (Pitt), among others. New Haven?s 6-6 Beachem, who has Butler and Purdue offers, said he?s still early in the process.

2013 New Haven wing V.J. Beachem still claims offers from just Butler and Purdue, but told reporters he’s very interested in Indiana. Beachem has always been labeled as a “potential” guy, but is beginning to show signs of putting things together.

V.J. Beachem, 2013, Eric Gordon All-Stars 16u- Beachem displayed consistency throughout pool play, showing off the versatility that makes him such a highly regarded prospect. The 6-7 wing was watched closely by coaches from Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Butler, Michigan State and more schools on Wednesday and Thursday. Beachem was aggressive when attacking the rim, looking to draw contact and finishing with either hand around the basket. He also was reliable from the 3-point line, keeping defenders honest and knocking down the perimeter jump shot when open. Beachem hit the glass hard, rebounding and taking advantage of second chance opportunities on the offensive end.

Can you just tell us where you?re at as a team and how you?ve progressed from April to July?

I think some people will think this is hard to believe but we?re still getting better. We?re still getting used to each other and, like I said, we?re still getting better. I don?t want to lose all July, we?ve just got to come out and play hard.

One of the things you mentioned in the spring was that you needed to work on rebounding. You were very aggressive on the glass here, talk about your progression.

I spent a lot of time being the biggest guy on the floor during June so that made me rebound. Now I?m coming out here and I have to rebound to help my team.

What?s it been like having all of the coaches there compared to the spring? how much fun Do you glance over there at all? Yeah, I glance over there quite a bit I?d say, but it?s very fun knowing that those guys are here to see us play. Here to see us do our thing.

Where are you in the process? I would say that it?s starting to speed up a little bit. After July, I think that it will speed up a little bit more. But I?m still taking my time for right now. [August] is probably when I?d make my decision. I don?t think it would be a whole lot longer before I?d make it.

What?s your school list now? Indiana, Butler, Purdue, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Xavier, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Florida , Stanford.

Beachem grabs coaches' attention
Top names watch still-undecided junior at tourney.
By Tom Davis
of The News-Sentinel

INDIANAPOLIS ? The lights are beginning to shine a lot brighter on V.J. Beachem.

A year ago, a handful of college basketball programs had him on their radar screens, but he certainly wasn't a focal point for the biggest names in college coaching. That's not the case anymore for the New Haven High School junior. At the adidas Invitational last week in Indianapolis, wherever Beachem played, some of the top programs followed.

?It's fun and it's great,? Beachem said of the attention, ?knowing that they are coming to see (me) play.?

Beachem has spent the past two seasons at Harding High School. But with the closing of the school, he and former Hawks coach Al Gooden will take their talents to New Haven.

Playing on the talent-rich Eric Gordon All-Star team, Beachem has drawn a lot of attention, and rightfully so. On his team were Indiana University recruits Devin Davis (Warren Central High School) and Collin Hartman (Cathedral High School), as well as Purdue recruit Basil Smotherman Jr. (Lawrence North High School).

The 6-foot-7 wing player hasn't yet made his college choice and has become one of the most sought-after recruits in the Midwest.

?I do notice (the coaches),? Beachem said. ?There are quite a few guys out there.?

Some of the coaches watching his every move over the tournament were Butler's Brad Stevens, Ohio State's Thad Matta, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Notre Dame's Mike Brey ? among others.

?It doesn't really bother me,? Beachem said of the pressure. ?I'm used to it. I kind of use it as motivation.?

Beachem recently received a scholarship offer from Butler, but has also visited Michigan State and Michigan this summer. He also lists programs such as Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Xavier, Ohio State and Florida among schools that intrigue him.

i've had a number of conversations with his much older cousin, who played at scum (football) awhile ago. he stated that vj may still be growing. two or three inches is not impossible. if vj does grow to be 6'9"+, he will be a player everyone wants, especially given his jump shot. ohio state would be a surprise selection, however. purdue and msu appear most likely.

Beachem closer to college decision

Fort Wayne New Haven?s V. J. Beachem is one of the top uncommitted juniors in Indiana, but he says he?s getting closer to a decision.

?I would say it?s starting to speed up,? the 6-7 Beachem said. ?I am still taking my time right now, but when I make my decision, I don?t think it will be a whole lot longer.?

He listed Indiana, Butler, Purdue, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Xavier, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Florida and Stanford as schools still in the mix. He said there are ?no favorites? but ?a few stick out.?
