Blog guest star: Devin Davis Jr. on visits to Ohio State and Tennessee
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

Warren Central sophomore-to-be Devin Davis Jr. is writing a weekly blog for us here at Recruiting Central throughout the summer. The 6-5 Davis has offers from Indiana and Purdue and took unofficial visits to Ohio State and Tennessee last week. He's writing about those visits today. He also has trips lined up soon to Michigan and Xavier. Check out Davis' work every Wednesday. Here's this week's entry:

Over the weekend, I had the chance to visit Ohio State University and the University of Tennessee. Both of the visits were extraordinary and another great learning experience. I learned new things from both Ohio State and the University of Tennessee. The most interesting thing about both of these visits was meeting the coaching staff and learning each team's style of play.

On my visit to Ohio State I met coach (Thad) Matta and most of the assistant coaches. I learned a lot of what the Ohio State program was about, what they are trying to do as a team and as individuals. One of the first things I noticed was the quotes on the wall. During my visit the coaches introduced me to Evan Turner, the National Player of the Year. We watched some of his workout and you can see why he's the top player. After the coaches and I left his workout, they showed me their arena, the Jerome Schottenstein Center. This was the most magnificent college arena I have seen so far. We also went to the locker rooms to see the Big Ten trophy, players' lockers and their new jerseys. Afterwards we went to their weight room and the weight coach showed me some before and after pictures of their players. He showed me the importance of strength training and remaining flexible. I also me the athletic director. Ohio State is a great school and I look forward to visiting again.

On my visit to Tennessee I participated in the elite basketball camp. At this camp there were bigger, stronger, faster, older and more athletic players than me. So I really had to think and use my head. The camp was fun and it really helped me to get better. It showed me how fast-paced Tennessee likes to play. After the camp, coach (Bruce) Pearl and his assistants had me stay after and watch their open gym. It was extremely exciting to watch some of their star players go at it. After watching the players, me and my dad talked to coach Pearl. He told us about their program and how they like to play. I really look forward to visiting coach Pearl and his staff again.

Therefore, my past week was fantastic thanks to my visits to Ohio State and the University of Tennessee. Thank you to everyone that has taken time to read my blog.

Five storylines from first evaluation period

3. Purdue and 2013s: The top talent in the 2013 class is starting to identify itself and it should be quite a battle to secure those commitments. Purdue has offered several players in the class, including Heritage Christian's Basil Smotherman, Warren Central's Devin Davis, Fort Wayne Northrop's Bryson Scott, Cathedral's Collin Hartman and Fort Wayne Harding's V.J. Beachem. Indiana and Xavier have also offered several of these players and it's so early that it's tough to tell how it will all shake out. Other schools will certainly get involved. But with three commitments already in the 2012 class, it's obvious Purdue is making this class a priority.

Devin Davis, Warren Central (IN): This weekend Davis showed off versatility and the ability to do a little bit of everything. He?s usually one of his team?s primary scorers, but isn?t afraid to mix it up as a rebounder and shot blocker. With Smotherman and Zak Irvin doing the scoring against MBA Select, Davis handled the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds. People familiar with Devin?s game know he is a tenacious rebounder, but he?s been improving and expanding his game all sumer long. This weekend he showed the ability to knock down perimeter jumpers, score off the bounce, and mix it up inside in a physical game. He?s one of the best athletes in Indiana?s 2013 class, and he uses that to his advantage on the boards as well as on offense. It will be interesting to see how he continues to develop his game between now and the high school season.

Any relation to Miami Redskins legend Devin Davis?

Not sure but plays his HS ball for ex-Hoosier guard Greg Graham and is on the Eric Gordon All-Stars [2013 squad] with Basil Smotherman of Heritage Christian and Zak Irvin of Hamilton Southeastern, both of whom also have offers from Indiana and Illinois. Purdue is also heavily involved with all three. Jeremy Hollowell and Ronnie Johnson are on the 2012 squad for the Eric Gordon All-Stars.

Devin Davis enjoys Saturday trip to Bloomington
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | October 3rd, 2010

After a stellar summer with the Eric Gordon All-Stars, 2013 Warren Central forward Devin Davis Jr. is quickly becoming one of the most sought after recruits in the state.

The 6-5, 190-pound sophomore already holds offers from Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Xavier and is drawing interest from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Butler.

Davis was among the impressive group of visitors at Saturday?s Indiana-Michigan football game and gave Inside the Hall a quick recap of the day.

?I didn?t play in the open gym, but it was pretty cool seeing most of the other players there like Jeremy Hollowell and Cody Zeller,? he said. ?They took us out on the field for the football game and introduced us to some of the players.?

Davis, who was accompanied by his parents, said he talked briefly with Tom Crean and the IU head coach emphasized the importance of hard work and continued improvement.

?He just told me to keep working hard and don?t let the recruiting process get to my head. Just keep working hard and get better.?

Davis, who was recently invited to tryout for the 2011-2012 Team USA Basketball Developmental National Team, is just beginning to sort through the recruiting process.

?I?m just taking it all in and trying to get every visit I can, see every school I can, see the different kinds of campuses,? he said.

As for a return trip to Bloomington, the Indiana staff invited the Warren Central sophomore to return on October 15 for Hoosier Hysteria, but he?s not yet sure he?ll attend.

?They invited me,? Davis said. ?I don?t know yet, I?ll have to talk to my Dad.?

Recruiting notebook: Warren Central's Davis enjoys his experience at USA Basketball tryout

It didn't take long for Devin Davis Jr. to realize his invitation to try out for USA Basketball's U16 team was a special honor. It took even less time to figure out how stiff the competition would be to make the team.

Davis, a 6-6 Warren Central High School sophomore, was one of 31 of the nation's top 14- and 15-year-olds to participate in the two-day Developmental National Team minicamp last weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"It was really exciting," said Davis, who started as a freshman last season. "If I make the team or not, it was a good experience. There were a whole bunch of bigger, better players, and I thought I played pretty good."

The camp consisted of two three-hour sessions Saturday and Sunday as prospects were run through skills competitions and scrimmaged. The only other Indiana native was Fort Wayne Bishop Luers freshman James Blackmon Jr., who committed to Indiana University last month.

Blackmon pitched the Hoosiers to Davis as they were paired as roommates. Davis has scholarship offers from Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Xavier.

"It was kind of funny," said Davis, who has made recent unofficial visits to Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State. "He was talking to me about it a little bit. I'm not really looking to make a decision right now, though."

Davis said he might not hear if he made the team until April.

Davis slowed by injury

Warren Central sophomore standout Devin Davis Jr. could miss "a game or two" at season's start due to a stress fracture in his back, coach Greg Graham said.

Graham said he expects the 6-6 Davis -- who has scholarship offers from Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Xavier -- to be fully cleared by a doctor today to resume all physical activity. He suffered the injury three weeks ago, falling hard to the floor after attempting to block a teammate's shot in open gym. Graham said Davis is questionable for the Warriors' season opener Nov. 27 at Noblesville and that he wants to be cautious.

"You don't want four weeks to turn into six months," he said.

Davis and Hartman, top 2013 prospects, commit to Indiana
Nov. 21, 2010

Sunday marked another huge in-state recruiting haul for the Indiana University basketball program, this time in the state?s sophomore class.

Warren Central?s Devin Davis Jr. and Cathedral?s Collin Hartman both committed to the Hoosiers and coach Tom Crean while on campus for IU?s game against Evansville.

The 6-6 Hartman said he was ?about 15 minutes? back up the road to Indianapolis when he told his mother, Melissa, to turn the car around.

?She said she was behind me 100 percent,? he said.

Hartman said he was also seriously considering Butler, Michigan State and Purdue.

The 6-6 Davis is also considered one of the top sophomores in the country. He was one of a select group of 14- and 15-year-olds invited to USA Basketball tryouts this summer.

?Devin and I had talked a little bit about what we were going to do, just getting each other?s opinions,? Hartman said. ?I knew there was a chance I?d commit when I came down here today.?
