Flint (MI) Powers Catholic

Height: 6-foot-5
Shooting: Good
Rebounding: Developing
Handle: Good
Passing: Good
Strength: Developing

Strengths:
Hawkins is a true shooting guard who is long and very athletic. he is an excellent rim attacker that displayed NBA three point range mostly off the catch from the wing on the break or when he received kick outs created by dribble penetration. Hawkins has a good first step that allows him to beat defenders and get to the rim where he can finish in heavy traffic or draw the foul. Hawkins will not hesitate to post a smaller defender and simply elevate over them. he competes and has a great motor as well. Hawkins has the length and athletic ability to defend both wing positions.

Weaknesses:
Hawkins will need to continue to add strength and tighten up his ball handling when under intense pressure. Hawkins must also improve his decision making because at time he seems to have his mind made up on what he wants to do which can cause him to pick up a foul or costly turnover. Hawkins could also be more of a factor on the glass given his length and athletic ability.

Bottom Line:
Hawkins reminds us of Detroit Pistons wing Richard RIP Hamilton. He is a long and highly skilled wing scorer that that competes and plays with great energy.

Former Flint Powers Catholic basketball standout JaVontae Hawkins

FLINT, Michigan ? Former Flint Powers Catholic basketball standout JaVontae Hawkins recently transferred to Huntington Prep in West Virginia to finish out his final season of prep hoops.

Hawkins, a Flint native, led the Chargers in scoring with 17.8 points per game last season and seemingly maintained his pace over the summer with the AAU Michigan Mustangs during the Best Buy Classic in Chicago. In a video recently posted on a video sharing site, Hawkins can be seen draining 3-point and mid-range shots with regularity.

Hawkins was one of the Flint area's top players in 2010-11 and is rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, a scouting- and recruiting-based web site. The 6-foot-5 guard reportedly has offers from Ohio State, West Virginia, Michigan and the University of Southern California, among a handful of other programs, according to Rivals.com.

Hawkins to South Florida; Henderson to West Virginia

By Adam Zagoria on October 24, 2011

Javontae Hawkins, the Rivals No. 23 shooting guard in the Class of 2012, has verbally pledged to South Florida.

?USF is getting an extremely high level athlete and scorer,? Huntington (West Va.) Prep coach Rob Fulford told SNY.tv. ?Javontae will be an immediate impact player for [head coach] Stan [Heath].

?He is a gym rat who is a potential all-Big East player. I anticipate Javontae to have a huge year at Huntington Prep and we are very excited for him.?

The 6-foot-5 Michigan native chose South Florida over Cincinnati, DePaul and Iowa, Fulford said.
