ROBINSON TWP. ? Rushel Shell is dangerous enough when lining up in the ?I? formation. But now that he?s also a ?Wildcat?, he?s even more of an offensive threat.
Shell, Hopewell?s sensational sophomore running back, proved that Friday night in a 30-23 win over Montour.
Down 14-10 after three quarters, Shell ran 58 yards for a touchdown out of the Wildcat formation on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Then after Montour went ahead 20-17, Hopewell used the Wildcat to strike again. This time, Shell took the long snap and then handed off to quarterback Matt Hundenski, who was lined up as a blocking back.
But instead of running with the ball, Hundenski threw a 53-yard TD pass to wide receiver Mark Ross.
The flea-flicker worked so well that all three receivers on the play ? Ross, wide receiver Ryan Costanza and tight end Dayne Smith ? were wide open. Had Hundenski thrown to either Costanza or Smith, the play probably would have resulted in a touchdown.
?The Wildcat is a package we use on occasion because we have a guy like Rushel who can run it,? Hopewell assistant coach Pat Tarquinio said. ?It?s a nice little package that gives our opponent something to think about.?
Hopewell has been practicing three different Wildcat formations ? each with Shell directly behind center in shotgun formation ? for much of the season. But the Vikings didn?t really use the Wildcat until last week?s win over West Allegheny, which uses the Wildcat extensively.
?I love the Wildcat,? Hundenski said.
On the night, Shell rushed for 263 yards and two TDs. He added to his WPIAL leads in rushing yards (1,724) and touchdowns (24). He also threw a pass out of Wildcat formation.
Beside his 58-yard Wildcat touchdown run, Shell also scored Hopewell?s last TD on a 66-yarder scamper out of the Vikings? base ?I? formation offense.
But Shell seemed to get as much satisfaction for his role in the flea-flicker that resulted in the Hundenski-to-Ross TD.
?That was one of our secret weapons,? Shell said. ?We?ve been working on it in practice. It was a good play call by Coach (Dave) Vestial. He pulled it out of our playbook at just the right time.?
