Vikings run 'wild' in winTEXT SIZE By: Mike Bires - Beaver County Times
Sunday October 25, 2009

ROBINSON TWP. ? Rushel Shell is dangerous enough when lining up in the ?I? formation. But now that he?s also a ?Wildcat?, he?s even more of an offensive threat.

Shell, Hopewell?s sensational sophomore running back, proved that Friday night in a 30-23 win over Montour.

Down 14-10 after three quarters, Shell ran 58 yards for a touchdown out of the Wildcat formation on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Then after Montour went ahead 20-17, Hopewell used the Wildcat to strike again. This time, Shell took the long snap and then handed off to quarterback Matt Hundenski, who was lined up as a blocking back.

But instead of running with the ball, Hundenski threw a 53-yard TD pass to wide receiver Mark Ross.

The flea-flicker worked so well that all three receivers on the play ? Ross, wide receiver Ryan Costanza and tight end Dayne Smith ? were wide open. Had Hundenski thrown to either Costanza or Smith, the play probably would have resulted in a touchdown.

?The Wildcat is a package we use on occasion because we have a guy like Rushel who can run it,? Hopewell assistant coach Pat Tarquinio said. ?It?s a nice little package that gives our opponent something to think about.?

Hopewell has been practicing three different Wildcat formations ? each with Shell directly behind center in shotgun formation ? for much of the season. But the Vikings didn?t really use the Wildcat until last week?s win over West Allegheny, which uses the Wildcat extensively.

?I love the Wildcat,? Hundenski said.

On the night, Shell rushed for 263 yards and two TDs. He added to his WPIAL leads in rushing yards (1,724) and touchdowns (24). He also threw a pass out of Wildcat formation.

Beside his 58-yard Wildcat touchdown run, Shell also scored Hopewell?s last TD on a 66-yarder scamper out of the Vikings? base ?I? formation offense.

But Shell seemed to get as much satisfaction for his role in the flea-flicker that resulted in the Hundenski-to-Ross TD.

?That was one of our secret weapons,? Shell said. ?We?ve been working on it in practice. It was a good play call by Coach (Dave) Vestial. He pulled it out of our playbook at just the right time.?

Rushel Shell rushed for 288 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 9 and 7 yards, as the No. 2 Vikings (9-0, 6-0) finished the regular season with an unblemished record and claimed the Parkway Conference title with a shutout of the visiting Tigers (0-9, 0-6). Shell has 2,043 yards on 193 carries for the season. Hopewell's Matt Hundenski threw touchdown passes of 34 and 12 yards to Mark Ross.

Rushel Shell, So., RB, Hopewell (Aliquippa, Pa.)
Update: While Shell is still a longshot to climb to the top of this list, we might as well ship the National Sophomore of the Year award to Hopewell High School now. The 6-0, 210-pounder reached 2,000 yards on the season in a 49-0 win over Moon Area as the Vikings improved to 9-0.

Hopewell's star running back suspended

HOPEWELL TWP. ? Rushel Shell, Hopewell High School's star running back, will not play Friday night when the Vikings open the WPIAL playoffs.

School administrators have no comment on the matter. But The Times has learned that Shell has been suspended from class for three days ? and thus is ineligible to play in a first-round game against Derry ? because he was caught with a can of smokeless tobacco in his pocket during school hours.

Advertisement Shell, a sophomore, leads the WPIAL with 2,044 rushing yards. He has scored 26 touchdowns for the 9-0 Vikings, the No. 2 seed in the Class AAA playoff bracket.

Even without Shell, Hopewell will be favored to advance against 3-6 Derry.

WPIAL Class AAA: Vikings step up for shutout
Teammates shine with RB 'shell' of himself

Saturday, November 14, 2009
By Rich Emert, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Last week, Hopewell proved it could win a game without standout running back Rushel Shell.
Last night at Ambridge High School's Moe Rubenstein Stadium, Hopewell proved it could win a game with Shell not having, for him, a great game.
. . .
Hopewell defeated Mars, 33-0, on a perfect night for football in a WPIAL Class AAA second-round contest. And while Shell rushed for 253 yards and scored three touchdowns on 28 carries, he was hardly the reason the Vikings had a commanding, 21-0 lead at the half.
. . .
Any anxiety he had went away when Shell ripped off a 91-yard touchdown run with 8:51 left in the third quarter to give Hopewell a 27-0 lead. Shell set up the score by intercepting a pass at the Vikings 9.
. . .
Shell, who led the WPIAL in rushing in the regular season, scored on runs of 27 and 12 yards in the first half. But it was Hopewell's so-called supporting cast that sparked the first-half surge.
. . .
Shell closed that one out with a 12-yard dash up the middle.

Shell, a sophomore who did not play last week because he was suspended for violating a school policy, now has 2,296 yards rushing this season. He needs 188 more yards to reach 4,000 for his career.
