Recruit says he finds right fit with Boilers
Molock, a sophomore, likes coach, players and academics at Purdue

Point guard Kyle Molock was in no hurry to make a college decision.

With three seasons to play at Dublin (Ohio) Coffman High School, the 6-1 sophomore could have watched the recruiting process unfold.

But after making an unofficial visit to Purdue last weekend, Molock saw no need to delay a decision, accepting basketball coach Matt Painter's scholarship offer.

"I love the Purdue campus and West Lafayette," Molock said Monday. "I like that it's more secluded than some metropolitan campuses that I've visited."

Molock, who hopes to major in engineering, business or pre-med, said he admires Painter.

"I knew he was a great guy . . . a genuine person," Molock said. "The thing I really like is that he really is focused on you the person, not just the basketball player.

"I like his coaching style and the fact he likes to play at a fast tempo. He gives his point guard the opportunity to run the show. You can sense by watching them that he lets his players play."

Sounds like a good get, we are excited to have him. Would like to hear any more info on the kid if anybody has it. Strengths, weaknesses, etc.

I have been tracking the Ohio 2012 class for 3 years. Purdue is getting a good one. He has all the tools and intelligence to be special. This is one who should have never left Ohio. Below is what ESPN Recruiting says:

October, 2009: Kyle is a solid and strong point guard. He has an excellent basketball IQ. He is a natural pass first point guard but has really improved his ability to score in the last year. He has a solid and strong body and is good at getting in the lane and creating for himself and others. He has an improving jump shot with range to 19 feet. He is a good defender with good quickness. Molock is a good athlete and still has a very good upside. He is a good get for Coach Painter and the Boilermakers as they go into Ohio and pull out one of their best sophomores. April, 2009: Kyle is a solid no nonsense point guard. He has great size for a young point guard. Molock is a pass first point guard that is always to trying find an open teammate or create for someone to score. He is a solid athlete and should get even better in time. His size enables him to see over most points he encounters. He is a solid scorer. He is effective at getting into the lane and shooting over people. He is also a solid slasher, getting to the rim and scoring off the bounce. Molock does need to improve his shooting. He has range to 17 feet but he mostly goes to the basket. He is a good rebounder with his size and athletic ability. Kyle is also a solid defender and understands defensive concepts.

All the major scouting services beg to differ. No offense but I'm taking their word for it.
No offense taken. We all see different things. I just haven't seen the kind of court vision or handle that to me spell top collegiate PG.

Of course, remember that we OSU fans have Mike Conley foremost in our memories!

Conley was one of the best PGs I have ever seen at the high school level and performed very well at OSU. Molock is only a soph, hopefully he can really develop his game even more over the next 3 years!

This is starting to get a little confusing. Indiana schools are coming to Ohio to get players and we are going to Indiana to get similar players. It seems like the coaches could get together and save on gas mileage.

No offense taken. We all see different things. I just haven't seen the kind of court vision or handle that to me spell top collegiate PG.

2012 is a long way off. Many kids will improve greatly and some kids will slide. I just don't understand how coaches can project our players are great to turn out 3-4 years from now and I am not saying that he will not be the next best thing to Conley:wink2: Recruiting is just crazy sometimes.

We really differ on this one, the strong point of Molock's game is his court vision, that is the one strength that almost everyone agrees's that he has and his ability to make others around him better. A freshman pg who led his HS team to a 20 - 4 record and made everyone better, he has also dominated the AAU scene the last few years, has consistently been one of the better guards in the country playing with the Ohio Basketball Club.

The thing about Molock is that he's not realy flashy, but has sound fundamentals and very athletic. I had to watch him a couple of times to really appreciate what he brings to the table.

You will be very please Boilers Fan, if he stay true to the commitment. Painter will have to continue to recruit him for 3 more years because the hounds are out there.

Purdue recruit suffers ACL tear

By JEFF WASHBURN ? [email protected] ? August 2, 2010

Kyle Molock, a Purdue recruit and a junior at Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio, will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The point guard, who committed to coach Matt Painter last fall, was injured last Tuesday during an Amateur Athletic Union tournament in California.

"It's a similar injury to what Robbie Hummel suffered," Karl Molock, Kyle's father, said Sunday afternoon. "We're going to be very cautious with it.

"They are telling us Kyle is looking at a recovery period of six to nine months, which could mean he will miss his entire junior season. However, that would still give him his senior year before he ever enrolls at Purdue."

Karl Molock said the family considered having Kyle's surgery done by Dr. Donald Shelbourne in Indianapolis but opted for a surgeon who works with the Ohio State athletic program. Shelbourne performed surgery on Hummel in March.

Ohio guard no longer committed to Purdue
Jun. 28, 2011

Kyle Molock, a 6-2 guard from Dublin, Ohio, rescinded his commitment to Purdue on Tuesday.

Molock originally committed to the Boilermakers in November of 2009. His father, Karl Molock, said the family decided it would be best to reopen his son?s recruitment.

?A lot has changed in the almost two years since he has committed,? the elder Molock said. ?(Former Purdue assistant) Paul Lusk was heavily involved with Kyle and he?s left for another job (at Missouri State). Kyle is 17 now compared to 15 when he committed and things change. We thought it would be best to look at some other schools just to make sure he?s going to the best place. We don?t know right know what that?s going to be.?

Molock missed all of his junior season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was unable to play in the spring, but has recently returned and is expected to play with the Ohio Basketball Club this summer.

Karl Molock said his son is basically starting over in the recruiting process.

?We haven?t narrowed a list down or anything like that,? he said. ?Everybody who wants to be will be involved.?

You have to feel for point guard Kyle Molock (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). The senior is lugging around a cumbersome knee brace that restricts his range of motion but provides him with the relief his knee needs for the time being. He's missed a lot of time after shredding his ACL, LCL and MCL. Last month, he and Purdue parted ways and he's no longer committed.

Molock has one goal for the summer: "I want to get guys interested to come see me in open gym this fall." Most kids are playing for scholarships, Molock's playing for the chance to show in a month or two that he's worthy of one. "He looked better in the warm-ups without the brace," a coach said. Hopefully the college guys will give him the benefit of the doubt and time to heal his knee so that the dream can get back on track.
