'12 OH OL Ryan Anderson

Roosevelt lineman continues making visits

Kent Roosevelt junior offensive lineman Ryan Anderson continues to visit some college programs. Anderson, who is regarded as one of the state?s top players in the 2012 class, attended the Pittsburgh-West Virginia game last Friday and the Ohio State-Michigan game on Saturday, according to Kent Roosevelt coach John Nemec.

Anderson (6-4, 300 pounds) has an offer from Pittsburgh, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

Anderson and Stanko are two nice linemen from Ohio IMHO. That said, the Buckeyes need Tackles not guards. Both project to be guards. I look for Dodson to get a Buckeye offer at Tackle and then 2-3 more from OOS.

Kent Roosevelt football standout Ryan Anderson, a junior, was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in the lower part of his right leg this week.

The form of bone cancer, which is considered to be extremely rare in teens, will abruptly end the gridiron career of the 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive lineman.

Anderson was a First Team All-Metro Division selection for the Rough Riders the past two years and had already received college offers from Boston College, Indiana, Miami (Ohio), Pittsburgh and Toledo.

A number of other schools, including Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State, had shown interest in Anderson as well.

Anderson first began to feel pain in his right leg at a track practice during the first week of March.

A week later he visited the school?s team doctor, who recommended Anderson have an X-ray on his leg. The X-ray discovered a mass in the femur part of Anderson?s right leg.

Following a biopsy and a series of extensive testing, the mass was diagnosed as bone cancer.

Anderson was largely regarded as one of the most talented offensive lineman in Ohio and was currently ranked No. 35 in the state by scout.com.

The Kent Roosevelt football program has already received sympathetic phone calls from area schools, including Canfield, Southeast, Field, Stow, Ravenna and Coventry. Additionally, a large number of college schools have called the program to offer their thoughts and prayers for Anderson?s health.

?The number of people who have reached out to Ryan and his family has been enormous,? Kent Roosevelt football head coach John Nemec said. ?I think that is a tribute to Ryan and the type of person he is.?

My girlfriend attended that high school and knew his family.

She showed me his facebook page a few days ago and said he was diagnosed with cancer.

I recognized his name and picture as an OSU recruit.

Very sad news.

My wife practices oncology, and she said the usual treatment for osteogenic sarcoma is amputation of the affected leg and hoping it hasn't spread to other parts of the body. Definitely a horrible thing for the kid to have to go through. Hopefully it hasn't metastasized and he can still live a full life.

my brother had osteosarcoma. always an athlete, he thought the persistent but insubstantial pain below his left knee was a common sports-related issue. after finally receiving a diagnosis, the doctors chose chemotherapy and surgery, which did not include amputation. he had a few rounds of chemo and the cancer even went into submission. unfortunately, it returned and had metastasized into his lungs, abdomen, and likely his brain. eleventh-hour efforts of gene therapy and localized radiation were unsuccessful.

my thoughts go out to ryan, his family, and his friends. bone cancer is a fierce test but it is beatable, especially when the person is as big and strong as ryan. given his conditioning, he is in a great position to overcome.

Yep, could happen to any of us. Hopefully he can beat cancer[strike] and come back to football.[/strike]

Football is a secondary (or less) consideration right now.

If this young man hasn't known adversity before today, he will now. What a tragedy.
