Shabazz Muhammad dunks for two of his 29 points in Dream Vision's 74-68 loss to the Atlanta Celtics on the first day of the adidas Super 64 tournament at Cimarron-Memorial High School.

It was 9:09 a.m. Wednesday when Shabazz Muhammad threw down his first dunk. About five minutes later, he dunked again. The rattling rim was an alarm clock for those in the gym still rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

Basketball might not be meant for the morning, but Muhammad is used to early starts.

"When I was 2, my dad had me dribbling a ball in the garage. I remember it now," he said.

How does a kid grow to be ranked the nation's No. 1 player in his high school class? He picks up the game early and stays late, as Muhammad did on the opening day of the adidas Super 64 tournament.

He rolled out of bed and scored 29 points as his Dream Vision (San Diego) team lost to the Atlanta Celtics 74-68 at Cimarron-Memorial High School. He returned in the evening and scored 15 in a 67-56 victory over KC Pump N Run.

Muhammad, 15, will be a sophomore at Bishop Gorman in the fall, and he's on the rise as Las Vegas' next prodigy. Hoop Scoop ranks him first in the class of 2012, and similar rankings by other recruiting services are expected to follow.

College coaches are getting to know him well. North Carolina's Roy Williams, Kansas' Bill Self, UCLA's Ben Howland, Texas' Rick Barnes and Oklahoma's Jeff Capel watched his morning performance.

Muhammad's dad, Ron Holmes, has a popular cell phone number, and UNLV's Lon Kruger is among the callers.

"It's just so early in the process. He still has at least two years until he has to make a decision," Holmes said.

The comment about his dad being called by Kruger raises a question.

I know that calls from coaches to recruits are limited in number and to certain periods. And that calls FROM the recruits to the coaches ARE NOT restricted. I believe some coaches were texting recruits telling them to call them - and thus some texting rules are either in place or being considered.

But what about calls from coaches to parents or "handlers"? Are they limited or regulated? Can Kruger call this kid's dad any time he wants and talk about his son ( so long as he doesn't call the son )? Seems like a "dodge" of the intent, no?

Shabazz Muhammad, SG- The USA 2012 team looked ragged to close out the event but the 6-foot-5 wing still seemed on top of his game. He's superbly conditioned, has the demeanor to forget negative plays and is always going to compete. He hits spot up jumpers, beats the pack down the floor to make plays at the rim in transition and has a viable post game that few, if any, wings in the country can match.

UCLA freshman phenom raises postgame eyebrows

Shabazz Muhammad took over the spotlight Thursday night, but his postgame fashion choice also caught some attention. After putting the Bruins on his back with a game-high 23 points, Muhammad put something else on his back before leaving the arena -- a black Gucci backpack. It was a nice look. Nice enough that I checked Gucci.com Thursday night and found 18 backpacks, with the cheapest going for $990 retail. ... I'm not saying there's something fishy about Muhammad's designer backpack, even though most of his teammates were sporting more modest, UCLA-issue models. (Fellow freshman Kyle Anderson also had a designer model.) Maybe it was a knockoff. I'm just saying a college kid wearing Gucci catches the eye.

You might recall the November drama that surrounded the 6-foot-6 wing player's college eligibility.
The high school All-American was under NCAA investigation for impermissible benefits received in high school ? and a lengthy suspension appeared to be a possibility until word broke about an NCAA investigator's boyfriend being overheard blabbing about the case on a plane. With the investigation apparently considered compromised, Muhammad was released from NCAA jail after missing only three games and being required to repay $1,600 in benefits received.

Muhammad's sister was not afraid to take to Twitter to share her thoughts on the controversy.

Via four tweets, Asia Muhammad wrote the following to Yahoo! Sports columnist Pat Forde:

"I read your condescending remark about [Shabazz] leaving with a Gucci backpack after beating Arizona. That was a birthday gift from myself (his sister) and his mother. I have the original receipt if you need to verify that. [Shabazz] doesn't need anything from anyone except his family. I understand you're a very distinguished writer, congrats on that. but you're barking up the wrong tree on this one."

Old story on his 3 game suspension at the start of the season, kind of interesting due to the recent "NCAA investing problems" associated with daU. etc.

The NCAA has let go of Abigail Grantstein after the unraveling of the case against Shabazz Muhammad.

The NCAA has reportedly fired Abigail Grantstein in the wake of the unraveling of the Shabazz Muhammad case. Grantstein is an assistant director of enforcement for the NCAA, who tasked her with the responsibility to investigate Muhammad. Unfortunately, her loud-mouthed boyfriend might have ruined her career.

The name of Grantstein surfaced earlier this year after a conversation on an airplane. Baxter Holmes of the Los Angeles Times reported that a passenger was caught on an airplane flight stating that her girlfriend was doing whatever it takes to ensure that Muhammad would not be eligible this year, regardless of the findings. An attorney overheard the conversation, eventually interviewed the Times and sent his findings to a former NCAA infractions committee chairman.

Soon after that revelation, the NCAA dropped their case and reinstated Muhammad, stating that he'd done enough to serve his sentence.

Overheard conversation suggests NCAA prejudged Shabazz Muhammad case
A lawyer says she heard a man say on Aug. 7 that his girlfriend was an NCAA attorney investigating Shabazz Muhammad and that he said, 'I can guarantee you that he's not going to play.'
