Small forward
Raleigh, North Carolina
Word Of God Christian Academy
AAU: Garner Roads

Ht:6'7"
Wt:200 lbs
Class:2012 (High School)

Strengths:
T.J.'s a big, versatile wing player who knows how to use his body like a savvy veteran creating off the dribble from the wing. He moves well without the ball and utilizes screens to free himself; after the catch he has a great shot fake and drive. He has a knack for drawing contact and has a nice touch from the free-throw line. He prefers to shoot it off the catch. Sneaky athlete with good size and has consistently gotten taller with each passing high school season. Mix in the fact that his father played college ball (NC State '74-'76) and you have a good player with college genes. Intelligent player, has the ability to carry a team.

Weaknesses:
T.J. is not a great defender at this point but he should improve with more discipline in the future. He can knock down a shot from the perimeter, but is going to need to rework his release to become a more consistent shooter from the 3-point line. He is a decent athlete in regards to running and jumping (not going to wow you). We would like to see him play with a higher motor and greater sense of urgency. He owns too good of a body to not be a better rebounder. Also needs to work on replicating efforts and keeping his focus. Would like to see him become a vocal player and not settle for 3's.

Bottom Line:
T.J. is very skilled for a young player. He is a fantastic natural scorer. T.J. can score inside and out. He uses his size very well inside on post ups. He's a Top 100 level prospect who spent his first two seasons at Durham Riverside before transferring. He'll be a first or second tier recruit for high-major schools.

Lewis, Warren light up the court
BY J.P. GIGLIO - Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- Tyler Lewis and T.J. Warren starred on the same basketball court Saturday at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in Raleigh.

Lewis, and N.C. State fans, hope that becomes a regular occurrence. Lewis poured in 47 points for Team Loaded, three short of the tournament's all-time record, and Warren scored 41 for Garner Road.

Lewis, a class of 2012 point guard who has committed to N.C. State, led his team to a 90-81 win in the 17-and-under pool play in the highlight of the tournament Saturday afternoon.

"Hopefully, next time we'll be in the same jersey," Lewis said.

Warren, a 6-foot-7 wing from Durham, ranks among the top 40 recruits in the class of 2012. He said he has a scholarship offer from N.C. State, where his father played for Norm Sloan in the late 1970s, but is leaving his options open.

New N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried already has Lewis and top 25 guard Torian Graham lined up for the class of 2012, the players who have one year of high school ball left.

"I want to play with Tyler and Torian," said Warren, who played last season with Graham at Word of God.

While Lewis remains committed to N.C. State, even after the coaching change, Warren's still early in the process of picking a college team. He listed N.C. State, Ohio State, Kansas, Florida, Arizona State, Miami, Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina as schools of interest.

As much as Warren likes Lewis and Graham, he said that would not be the sole determining factor.

"We'll see where that goes in the future," he said, coyly.

TJ Warren, a 6-foot-7 class of 2012 small forward out of Word of God Christian Academy (NC), was one of the day’s best players. The Garner Road star showed why he able to list off scholarship offers from Georgetown, Florida, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Miami, Arizona State, and Kansas. Warren said that he has no favorites and that all of the schools are recruiting him equally hard.

So far Warren has only taken visits to Georgetown and North Carolina State. He will visit NC State again next Tuesday and also has three other trips visits on tap. Warren will head down to Florida in about three weeks, Georgetown from June 23-25 and will also be at Kansas' elite camp.

Perhaps Matta is so interested because of the David West connection with TJ (and vice-versa!):

There's Hollywood and then there's Raleighwood. One's known for turning out stars on a daily basis. The other, well, it's been a good run for the capitol city of North Carolina the past few years. From Chris Wilcox, who won a national title at Maryland, to John Wall, last year's No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, Raleigh's kicked out its share of players in the last decade.

One NBA all-star grew up just outside of Raleigh in Garner, N.C., and he's helping usher in the next round of prime time performers. David West of the New Orleans Hornets is affiliated with the Garner Road AAU program and for the past few years he's helped small forward T.J. Warren (Durham, N.C./Word of God) with the nuances of the game. Warren was a star last season at Word of God, the Raleigh program that also produced Wall in 2009.

West was in attendance at last weekend's Tournament of Champions and watched Warren go for 41 points in a pool play game.

"It's about that time for him," West said of Warren. "Things are starting to click in terms of his mindset and he's gotten a lot better. He's worked on some things we asked him to do and he's going to continue to get better."

Ranked No. 39 (and rising) in the ESPNU 100, Warren's spring play has been spectacular. He's been a big scorer largely due to his 3-point stroke. However, his AAU coach, Dwayne West (David's brother) says his star forward has been more than just hot, he's been efficient.

"He's shot at least 60 percent every time he's had 40. He's very efficient," said Dwayne West.

Prior to the spring, Warren was a fixture in most Top 100 lists, though he rarely cracked the Top 50. His superior wing size and stroke were always calling cards, but there was something holding him back; something missing from his game. Dwayne West credits Warren's awakening to his newly minted mindset.

"In the past, when he was challenged he used to get angry," Dwayne West said. "Now he becomes more aggressive and proves what he can do."

After every game last weekend, Warren and David West seemed to hold a debriefing session. David West is visible with Garner Road, engages with the players and Warren values the relationship.
"I spend a lot of time with David, he's like my mentor," Warren said. "He tells me what I need to do, what to work on; he's a real good guy."

Warren is the son of a former NC State player, Anthony Warren, who played with the Wolfpack in the late 1970s. T.J.'s never actually seen his dad play, but understands his pop had a big reputation around town as a player in his day.

"When I hear people (talk) they say he was the man back in Raleigh," T.J. Warren said.

T.J. will have a chance to be the "the man" for NC State because he too has been offered by the Wolfpack and new coach Mark Gottfried wouldn't mind T.J. following in his dad's footsteps. But the Wolfpack has company. Florida, Kansas, Ohio State, Miami, Texas and Georgetown are also in the mix. Warren's been to see the Hoyas and he's been on NC State's campus as well. He has plans to see Florida at the end of the month.

Ohio State is an interesting school on his list. David West was recruited and coached by coach Thad Matta at Xavier. West enjoyed his Xavier experience so much that he skipped out on the NBA to return to school. Now Matta is the head coach at Ohio State and he's got his eye on Warren; recently the Buckeyes offered him a scholarship.

"Ohio State's been following me for a long, long time," Warren said.

With a mentor who played for Matta, a father who ran with the Wolfpack and a jump shot that could work for anybody, T.J. Warren is his own man. In the fall, we'll see where his path takes him. For now, he's on the rise and making the most of his chances to carve out his own niche in Raleighwood and beyond.

I guess the question regarding Ohio State's recruitment of Warren is how many scholarships we will have available for the 2012 class because one of them will certainly have to go to a big man with the assumed departure of Sullinger.

I guess he could take Buford's position but then we are really limited in scholarships for the 2013 class.

I really don't think we need to worry too much about scholarships opening up. Guys going to the League after a year or two have a way of working those things out.

Currently, schools are noticing this blossoming talent. As of now, Warren has a list of, ?Florida, Georgetown, Ohio State, NC State, Kansas and North Carolina; that?s probably the list I?m focused on right now,? he said. However, Warren says that could change with some new schools coming into the mix and showing solid interest. Those potential schools are, ?Louisville, Rutgers, Missouri, Syracuse and Duke.?

Warren and Thomas to Brewster; Recruiting Roundup
By Adam Zagoria on June 30, 2011
By ALEX KLINE

After losing a starting lineup full of stars, Brewster Academy in New Hampshire has officially reloaded.

T.J. Warren, a 6-foot-7 2012 small forward, decided Wednesday to attend the institution in Wolfeboro over Oak Hill Academy, while Aaron Thomas will join him.

?It?s official, I?m going to Brewster Academy for my senior season,? Warren, who had been at Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God, said by phone. ?The education at Brewster is great. I?ve been talking to [Memphis player and former Brewster player] Will Barton and he?s been giving me good advice about it. The tradition of the basketball program is great. It?s just a good fit for me.?

Warren settles on summer seven
T.J. Warren (Durham, N.C./Brewster Academy) recently made a significant decision. He's heading off to Brewster Academy for his senior year where he'll star alongside Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster). Warren began his high school career at Durham Riverside then switched after two years to Word of God in Raleigh, N.C. Now at Brewster, he'll face a tough northern prep schedule.

His collegiate recruitment could have him returning home in the fall of 2011. Warren recently trimmed his college list to seven programs: Georgetown, Florida, NC State, Louisville, Kansas, Texas and North Carolina. Each program, except the Tar Heels offered him a scholarship. The 6-foot-6 small forward with exceptional shooting touch and deep range is the son of a former NC State player.

Here?s a sneak preview of some prospects who will draw the attention of Matta and his assistants this month:

T.J. Warren
Height, Weight: 6-7, 215
Position: Shooting Forward
School: Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy
ESPN Ranking: 6th among SFs, 39th overall in class of 2012
Considering: Florida, North Carolina, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
Camp This Week: adidas Invitational
Outlook: Originally from Durham, N.C., Warren?s long list of schools, ironically, does not yet include Duke, presumably because he?s had some academic concerns. Still, he appears to be on track to land at a major college program and ready to make an immediate impact. The predictions are for him to land somewhere in the ACC but he insists he?s open-minded to other areas of the country. On the hardwood, he?s both a creator and a finisher with the ball. He also has a knack for drawing fouls and earning trips to the free-throw line, where he usually cashes in on his chances. Analysts praise his basketball IQ, which is at least partly attributable to the fact that his father played college basketball at N.C. State in the glory ear of 1974-76.

T.J. Warren commits to Wolfpack

By Dave Telep
ESPN Recruiting

T.J. Warren, the 23rd-rated player in the latest ESPNU Top 100, committed to North Carolina State on Wednesday, picking the Wolfpack over Georgetown.

"When I was growing up I went to a lot of games when Herb Sendek was the coach and Julius Hodge was there," said Warren, who goes to Brewster Academy in Durham, N.C. "I've always been a State fan."
