-Matt Costello, the 6'8 PF from Bay City Western (MI) is a coaches dream. He plays hard, he plays smart, he converts on everything he is supposed to, and he's not a project. This kid is good right now. One of the best shot blockers in the state, and his range is extending to the three point line now. His potential is crazy, could be the most productive big man in Michigan this year. Top 2 in 2012 in Michigan.

2012 Michigan Players Receiving Interest

Two of Michigan's Top 5 players in the 2012 class are already receiving high major interest. 6'8 Matt Costello, who is the #1 2012 player in Michigan by BOTB, is receiving interest from Michigan St., Michigan, Iowa, Purdue, Ohio State, Cleveland State, Penn State, Marquette, Norte Dame, Detroit, and Providence. Costello and his family have already visited Michigan St, Ohio State, Cleveland State, and Purdue. Expect numerous high major schools to check out Costello in open gyms this week as colleges are now able to check out players workouts. High major offers should follow quickly.

In the future, Heritage coach John Wilson expects to see Matt Costello playing on television for a Division I basketball team.

For now, however, he'll settle for beating Costello and his Bay City Western team.

Costello, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, but the Hawks overcame Western, 70-55, in a non-league game Tuesday at Heritage.

"People say he's a Division I player, and I'd have to agree," said Wilson, a former Division I player at Kent State. "He really impressed me. He was on fire. He's better than I was. He has range."

Costello, who made four 3-pointers, had 15 of Western's 25 first-half points as Heritage took a 30-25 halftime lead.

Q&A: 2012 Forward Matt Costello
Published

Matt Costello is a 6-8, 210-pound forward from Auburn, MI. He?s playing AAU ball with Team Pride this summer and his stock has been on the rise. He had an impressive season playing for Bay City Western this season. I went to watch him at the Motown Showdown earlier this summer and here?s some of what I had to say:

Costello is tall, long, tough and coordinated. A lot of times with young big guys, you get the sense that they?re still growing into their bodies, but he looked perfectly at home. You looked at him and expected him to dominate the glass, and he did. He kept the ball high in the post, which takes some guys years to learn. When didn?t receive entry passes, he went and got them. He was quick on his feet for someone his size, losing his defenders in the post and staying in front of whoever he was guarding.

Costello isn?t that well-known right now (he is unranked on Rivals and Scout) but he?s definitely a player to watch. I got a chance to sit down for a quick phone interview with him earlier today.

Sam Webb: Recruiting
Bay City big man Matt Costello weighs offer from Michigan

Bay City hasn't often registered as a point of interest for college basketball coaches on the recruiting trail, but over the past year they've made a habit of plugging the small mid-Michigan town into their navigation systems. The reason for that sudden rise in interest is Bay City Western big man Matt Costello. The 6-foot-8, 215-pounder is already widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the state's 2012 class.

During his sophomore campaign, Costello contributed 16.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.4 blocks and three assists per contest en route to fueling his team's run to a district championship game. There, the Warriors fell to Mt. Pleasant and Central Michigan-bound forward Trey Zeigler. It marked the third time last season that Costello was on the losing end of a match-up with Zeigler, and yet Costello's potential still drew substantial praise from his elder counterpart. That, though, served as little consolation for a youngster that only sees the bottom line.

As strong as their feelings for Michigan are, both father and son have made it a point to remain open to the opportunities that other programs might present. Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana and Butler all have shown a great deal of interest -- as well as Michigan State.

Kentucky Hoopfest: Matt Costello
by Alex Bozich in Video | July 11th, 2010

One of the latest 2012 prospects to pick up an IU offer is Bay City (MI) forward Matt Costello. The 6-8, 210-pound Costello, who plays for Dorian?s Pride, talked to Inside the Hall after a 16-point effort in front of Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley on Sunday at the Kentucky Hoopfest:

No offer yet from tOSU but he does mention their interest...

Indiana University is high on the list of one of the top prospects participating in this weekend's Kentucky HoopFest in Louisville.

Matt Costello, a junior-to-be from Linwood, Mich., who said he recently was offered a scholarship by IU coach Tom Crean, has been drawing a crowd at the Kentucky Exposition Center through two of four days at the HoopFest.

The 6-foot-9 Costello plays for the Dorians Pride team that is coached by former NBA player Tim McCormick.

"He's tracking as a high-major project," Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels said in his report from the event.

Costello also has offers from Xavier, Michigan, Southern California and Oakland. He's visited IU, Michigan, Purdue and Butler and said Tennessee, Syracuse, Cincinnati and Cleveland State are among schools also showing interest.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has been at two of his games, and Michigan coach John Beilein, Tennessee's Bruce Pearl and West Virginia's Bob Huggins have been spotted at his HoopFest games.

Costello said he probably will visit Michigan State soon and that he does "really like" Indiana.

"I like Indiana's tradition," he said. "I never really knew about the tradition because I really didn't pay attention that much and they really haven't been that good the past couple years. But it's started to pick up, and coach Crean is doing a really good job."

Matt Costello, Bay City Western (MI), Dorian?s Pride (pictured): Costello, a high-energy prospect that rarely takes a play off, is a versatile forward that can knock down shots from the perimeter and also finish in the post. His mid-range game is solid, too, and he doesn?t shy away from taking the open look. Costello excels at doing the little things it takes to win ? like setting hard screens and diving for loose balls. He?s listed at 6-8 or 6-9, but looked to be closer to 6-7 based on observing a game and then standing next to him for an interview. It?s tough to imagine Costello leaving his home state with offers from Michigan and Michigan State already in-hand.
