'12 IN SF DeJuan "Rico" Marrero (DePaul Verbal)

DeJuan Marrero, Spiece Indy Heat: Tough. That is his game. Tough defensively, tough rebounder, just tough. I, nor he, has any idea what position he will play in college. He played on the wing and struggled with his jumper and ball handling. If he gets a decent mid-range game and improves his ball handling, he will be a stud. What gets him over is he plays harder than anyone on the court at all times.

DeJaun Marrero, Bowman Academy

Maybe it?s because his phone started ringing incessantly on the first day coaches could call in June.

Maybe it?s because he?d already secured offers from Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State and Cincinnati before entering July.

Maybe it?s because his talent, energy and aggressiveness speak volumes.

Maybe it?s because he really is that cool that he?s not phased at all by the daunting month.

Marrero, a 6-foot-5 forward, said he didn?t have any worries about entering the intense recruiting scene.

?It?s a busy, busy month,? Marrero said. ?It?s like a job. You manage your time. You?ve just got to put everything in order, what you?re going to do, where you?re going to be. I don?t feel pressure at all. I try not to put myself under pressure, just go out and play and do what I?m supposed to and play my game.

?I?ve been relaxed, taking it day by day.?

Marrero said all the attention from coaches has made one thing difficult ? keeping friends, family and fans from offering opinions.

But, entering July, he said he didn?t have a leader and isn?t rushing to make a decision because ?I?m still young and have a lot of time ahead of me.?

Marrero visits Indiana and Marquette, but still taking his time
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

DeJuan Marrero is a quick leaper, plays bigger than his size and can finish in transition. He knows he also has his skeptics.

"People say I don't have a jump shot," said the 6-5 junior from Gary Bowman Academy. "So I've been working hard to get that right."

Marrero played mostly on the low block as a sophomore on a loaded Bowman team (the Class A champion) and averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds. He expects to still do damage on the block this season, but also show more versatility.

"I'm still going to be rebounding, but probably playing more on the wing," he said. "Another big thing is being a leader. A lot of my guys I'd played with since third grade graduated last year. I looked up to those guys a lot so it's up to me now to show the new guys what to do."

Marrero, ranked No. 99 nationally by Rivals.com in the 2012 class, expects to make a college decision next summer. He has more than a few options. Marrero has an offer from Indiana and recently attended the Hoosiers' elite camp. He also took a recent visit to Marquette and said he has plans to take an unofficial visit to Xavier this weekend. But his school list remains long and he's "keeping all options open."

"I'm looking at what style the team plays and if they treat you like family," he said. "Academics are important (Marrero said he has a 3.0 grade-point average) and I want to make sure (coaches) aren't just telling you stuff just to say it. In my mind, it's still pretty wide open. My mom (Yolanda) just wants me to be happy where I go."

Marrero has 'motor that never stops'
Posted by: Cody Westerlund
Thursday, September 23, 2010

Don't get Bowman Academy head coach Marvin Rea started on junior DeJuan Marrero's motor on the basketball court. You may never hear the end of it, but that's a good thing.

"DeJuan just has a drive and a motor that never stops," raves Rea, who's been coaching the 6-foot-5 small forward out of Gary, Ind., since the player was in seventh grade. "He has a motor that's unbelievable. He's always active on the court, he never settles. He just never settles."

"I don't think you'll find another player in the nation who has a motor like DeJuan has," Rea continues. "He's going to go find the ball, he's going to go get the ball."

Tenacity on the court isn't the only reason colleges such as Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Ohio State have extended scholarship offers to Marrero. Rea called Marrero a "throwback player" because he can do a little bit of everything and said one of Marrero's real strengths is his ability to run the floor and finish at the rim.

But it's still his motor that stands out.

"He's always getting a double-double. That shows he brings it every night," Rea said. "With all the hard work he's put in over the summer in the weight room and on the court, there's nothing but upside."

For now, Marrero has been focusing more on his game than the recruiting process. Many coaches have come to visit with Marrero and watch him play this fall, but "I wouldn't say DeJuan has any leaders," said Rea. The coach added Marrero will have a better understanding of the direction he wants to take when he makes more visits.

"Once he gets on the campus, sees it and is talking to a coach, he'll know what's right," Rea said. "He'll know when a school is for him."

Rea said there are plans for Marrero to go on a handful of unofficial visits this fall, including to the campuses of Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Marquette and Xavier.

"DeJuan has a good relationship with (assistant coach Jay) Price and (head coach Bruce) Weber," Rea said. "He's always had a good relationship with those guys, they've always supported him. The University of Illinois has always been on DeJuan's radar. They're just as good as any other school right now."

DeJuan Marrero Commits to DePaul

By Alex Kline

DeJuan Marrero is off the board after taking a visit on Tuesday afternoon.

The 2012 small forward out of Bowman Academy in Indiana made a trip to DePaul. Hours later, the rebuilding Big East school landed their first commitment from the rising senior. Marrero was excited to take his talents to Chicago, where he will play for Oliver Purnell.

He had three reasons behind the decision. ?Their academics are great,? he said. ?DePaul is close to my mom and I feel like I can change the program around.?

Marrero chose the Blue Demons over Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Xavier and many more. He joins a young, rebuilding DePaul team with a second-year staff that could make some noise this year with one of the top players in the Big East, Cleveland Melvin, as well as freshmen Macari Brooks and Montray Clemons, among others.
