Carol City RB Freeman's work ethic draws raves
BY J.T. WILCOX
Miami Herald Writer

Carol City junior running back Ernest Freeman takes the adage ``work while everyone else is resting'' to a whole new level.

Last season while the 5-11, 185-pound prospect was hobbled by knee injury, he continued to go through weight room sessions and participated in practices as far as his body would allow -- usually against the coaches' wishes.

Chiefs coach Harold Barnwell recalls Freeman's will to workout.

``We literally had to run him out of the weight room and off the field,'' Barnwell said. ``He wanted to keep working and wanted to keep doing things. I can appreciate that because it sets an example for the rest of the team, but we wanted him to rest and get back healthy.''

``His work ethic is second to none,'' Barnwell added.

Even before Freeman was promoted to the varsity squad, he was considered one of the most physically fit athletes in the program -- registering a 280-pound max bench press and a 4.51 40-yard dash time.

Miami Herald recruiting analyst Larry Blustein gave Freeman high praise.

``Freeman has everything you are looking for in a quality back,'' Blustein said. ``He has tremendous vision, great balance, speed and quickness and super instincts. He's also very good out of the backfield, catching passes and creating mismatches.''

Freeman's physical tools and potential to have a breakout year in 2010 have drawn the attention of many schools, including Miami, Ohio State, North Carolina and Oklahoma. But Freeman has remained open about his choice as it's still a year away.

``I just want to play football, really,'' Freeman said. ``I just want to help my team win. All that other stuff will come when its time for it to happen.''
