A star is born: Brewer shines for Chaparral

Connor Brewer was the water boy during Scottsdale Chaparral?s 4A-I state title game last year.
On Friday, he gave the Firebirds a much sweeter drink: A big gulp of a state championship.
Brewer, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound sophomore quarterback, threw for one touchdown, ran for another and played well beyond his years in Chaparral?s 34-21 5A-I victory over Tempe Marcos de Niza at Sun Devil Stadium.
?What a transformation,? Brewer said. ?I couldn?t ask for anything more. Hopefully it?s one of many in my time here.?
That kind of talk may seem arrogant, but given Brewer?s talent and the fact that he still has two more years of high school ball left, it may well be prophetic.
Simply put, the kid is special. The mailman who delivers to the Brewer home in Scottsdale might want to add a few core exercises to his daily routine, because the mailbox will soon be stuffed with press guides and letters from college coaches across the country.
?He?s amazing,? senior tackle Andrew Gustafson said. ?I?ve never seen a young kid like him be so poised. He?s a leader. And the scary part is he?s only going to get better.?
Brewer?s numbers weren?t anything special Friday: He was 6-for-9 passing for 147 yards and he ran six times for 24 yards, but he arguably made the three biggest plays of the night.
