Townsend giving USC stronger look

By Phil Kornblut
Marlboro County LB Lateek Townsend (6-3 208), who as been a public lean to Clemson, said Monday night USC is now as strong with him as the Tigers. "I like South Carolina as much as I like Clemson," Townsend said. "I'm not trying to be a player who leaves the state. I'm going to try my best to look at South Carolina and see if I'm missing something. I'm going to look at South Carolina real hard. They have been on my mind a lot. I definitely want to get there for a spring practice. I've been talking to Victor Hampton and I know Marcus Lattimore. It wouild be great to play with them." Townsend said he last was at USC for a bowl practice in December. Cincinnati is his most recent offer and he's expecting one in the mail soon from Ohio State. Some of his other offers are Illinois, NC State, Maryland, Texas A&M, Alabama, Miami, LSU, Tennessee, North Carolina, Nebraska, Michigan State, Georgia Tech and Southern Cal.

I wish South Carolina would concede the whole USC thing. Since it is accepted in college football circles to denote tOSU so as not to confuse with Oregon State and Ok State, maybe we ought to circulate a petition to denote Southern Cal as tUSC.

Regardless this kid has an impressive list of suitors...

For the record, South Carolina has been a USC since 1865, Southern Cal since 1880.

By Phil Kornblut

Recruiters from Clemson and Florida were on hand at Marlboro County Tuesday to watch LB Lateek Townsend (6-3 205) in another spring practice workout. The Tigers and Gators have been among Townsend's favorites along with USC and Southern Cal. He plans to attend a camp at Southern Cal this summer.
