Maple Heights quarterback Shaq Washington jokes with teammates while waiting to take the field against Valley Forge on Sept. 11. - (Joshua Gunter - The Plain Dealer)

New Shaq in town has Maple Heights buzzing
Tim Warsinskey, Plain Dealer Reporter, September 18, 2009 10:17 a.m.

Maple Heights has your "Shaq Vs."

How about "Shaq Vs." for the Division II state football championship?

No, not new Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal and his summer TV show on ABC.

We're talking Maple Heights junior quarterback Shaquille Washington, who has enough charisma to share a first name with O'Neal - whom he was named after - and perhaps enough talent to have the Mustangs sharing thoughts about winning a title.

"I think this is a state championship team," senior tackle Dominic Flewellyn said.

The statement is repeated often by Mustangs players and coaches, and it's not hyperbole. The eighth-ranked Mustangs, who take a 3-0 record into tonight's game at No. 17 Shaw, truly believe they have the essential combination of talent, speed, size, experience, fortitude and something else.

"Shaq has the it factor," said senior guard Tim Love. "He has the speed, the athleticism and he's a leader out there on the field. With him behind our line, we're unstoppable."

Washington is charming, funny, smart (3.7 grade-point average) and sounds like he's running for office. In fact, he already has a foot in the door at City Hall. Following a season-opening victory against Avon Lake, Maple Heights Mayor Jeffrey Lansky invited Washington to a council meeting and gave him a proclamation declaring Sept. 2 "Shaquille Washington Day" in the suburb of 26,000.

Shaq Attack: Maple Heights Receiver Brings The Speed | Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Recruiting, OSU Big Ten Football, OSU Basketball – Bucknuts.com

Posted by Mark Porter on Oct 15, 2009 at 03:08 pm
The saying goes "the smaller you are, the faster you better be" when it comes to college football recruiting. When Shane Wynn, the 5-8 WR from Glenville, got his offer from OSU a few weeks back, this saying was never more true.

Today we look at another undersized WR/ATH from the Cleveland area in Maple Heights High School product Shaq Washington. If you read the Bucknuts.com Front Row, you have already learned that Shaq has transferred from Glenville to Maple Heights this season.

Shaq is the starting QB for Maple Heights now and through five games this season, he has put together quite a highlight video. Being just 5-9 and 165 pounds, if Shaq was not fast we could not even talk about him as an elite high school prospect. But needless to say, his video will show lightning quickness, acceleration, and speed.

In addition to the game highlights, there is also a portion of the video filmed during Shaq's off-season combine workouts where he lines up at WR. This is the portion of the video that I found very interesting because he displays elite WR skills. While watching his game highlights, you wonder if he can project to WR. Then you see him play WR during combine drills and all those questions are answered.

Check out Shaq Washington's junior highlights from his first five games here.

Cardinals drive to victory in final 1:58

Joe Magill, Special to The Plain Dealer, October 17, 2009 1:39 a.m.

When you play a schedule such as the one faced by Mentor's football team there is little margin for error.

So when the Cardinals, who entered Friday's game with three losses, found themselves on their own 36-yard line with 1 minute, 58 seconds to play and on the short end of a 24-21 score to visiting Maple Heights, it was surprisingly simple what needed to occur.
. . .
Mentor seemed on its way to an easy victory, holding a 21-6 lead at the half. However, the Mustangs stepped up their game in the second half and were just a few minutes away from stealing a big victory, scoring 18 unanswered points and taking a three-point lead with 6:41 to play on a 63-yard pass from Shaq Washington to Andre Stubbs.

Maple Heights surges into football playoffs: High school roundup - cleveland.com

Plain Dealer staff reports, October 31, 2009 11:33 p.m.

The first round of the football playoffs will not be officially determined until Sunday, but here is a warning for the teams in Division II, Region 6.

Maple Heights has snapped out of its doldrums.

Junior quarterback Shaquille Washington delivered the wake-up call.

After dropping consecutive four-point losses to Division I schools Mentor and Euclid in each of the past two weeks, the Mustangs tuned up for their first playoff appearance since 2006 when Washington completed 11 of 17 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs (8-2) routed host Shaker Heights, 33-6.

Juniors Levon Perkins, Andre Stubbs and Claybourne Miller all caught scoring passes from Washington. Senior linebacker Fred Robertson had nine tackles for the Mustangs, who probably will play at Toledo Rogers on Friday.

I've loved this kid ever since I saw him in the camp circuit. His best attributes - for the most part - weren't on display last weekend. He goes up/out and attacks the football, has soft hands, darts in and out of his cuts and has excellent toughness despite his size. The latter was evident at times Saturday night, completing some tough passes with a defender about to lay him out.

He is very undersized but is a perfect slot WR. I can't figure out why UM hasn't been all over this kid.

Watched this kid in person a few weeks ago against Toledo St. Francis.

Probably not 5'9. More like 5'7. Quick feet, plays quarterback. Very fast when he gets into the open field. I won't doubt his speed, but durability is a problem, and the team as a whole played dirty and undisciplined. However the kid is constantly a big play waiting to happen. I will, though, be surprised to see him get an offer.

Plain Dealer's football Offensive Player of the Year: Shaq Washington, Maple Heights
Tim Warsinskey / Plain Dealer Reporter, December 18, 2009 10 a.m.

Maple Heights quarterback Shaq Washington, The Plain Dealer?s Offensive Player of the Year, passed for 1,766 yards, ran for 901 (during the regular season), and directed his team to the Division II state championship game. - (Scott Shaw / The PD)

Much has been written and said this fall about junior quarterback Shaq Washington, who led Maple Heights' remarkable run to the Division II state final. Perhaps guard Tim Love said it best back in September.

"Shaq has the 'it' factor," Love said. "He has the speed, the athleticism, and he's a leader out there on the field."

Washington proved it week after week. He was outstanding. He was consistent. He is The Plain Dealer's Football Offensive Player of the Year.

Considering we offered Wynn first where does this leave Shaq? Given the Talblooders MO of deciding late in process, is he the only slot to get an offer.

I sure wouldn't mind Shaq getting an offer, not that it matters. When he was named all combine team, what position was that for?
