As he sat 10 rows behind the Ohio State football team on Sept. 2 at Ohio Stadium, J. Schroeder witnessed first-hand what Division I college football is like.
Watching as a guest recruit for the Buckeyes' opener with Marshall, the St. Charles Preparatory School senior could also relate to a play that was only a blemish for the host school.
Being recruited as a kicker and punter by the Buckeyes, he watched as freshman Drew Basil had his 53-yard field-goal attempt blocked by Marshall's Johnny Jones and returned by Ahmed Shakoor for the Thundering Herd's only score of the contest.
"I was straight down the line from where (Basil) kicked the ball and the middle of the line just gave out and (the Marshall defenders) just bum-rushed him," Schroeder said. "They brought everyone and the middle of the line broke."
Schroeder, on the other hand, has been perfect this season for the undefeated Cardinals. He made all four of his field-goal attempts and all five of his extra-point kicks.
St. Charles opened with a 27-20 win over visiting Canal Winchester on Aug. 27 as Schroeder made field goals of 41 and 42 yards to account for the first six points scored by his team this season. He also added a 20- and a 33-yarder last Friday in a 20-6 win over host Eastmoor Academy.

Schroeder attended several football camps. The road map for his summer camp tour dotted across much of the eastern U.S., including Alabama, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana State, Ohio State, Missouri, Penn State and Toledo.
"He's been working with (former Ohio State and NFL kicker and punter) Tim Williams and he went to a lot of camps over the summer," coach Jeff Pharion said. "That's when he first started to get noticed."
