Article from today:
His name is God?s Gift and according to his coach, he might just be that for some college program.

God?s Gift Achiuwa is a 6-foot-8 power forward originally from Nigeria who competes at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. His father is a minister in his home country and gave him the unusual name.

He is being recruited by Ohio State, Cincinnati, St. John?s, N.C. State, Marquette, Hawaii and Niagara, according to Erie coach Alex Nwora.

?He?s not going to take any visits until afer Christmas,? Nwora said Wednesday by phone. ?After Christmas, we?re going to cut down and narrow down to three or four schools he?s going to visit and then we?re going to make a decision and sign in April.?

Nwora said Achiuwa could make a verbal commitment before April, of course.

?After he takes his visits, if he sees a a school he likes he might give a verbal commitment so they won?t keep recruiting that position,? he said.

St. John?s head coach Steve Lavin, who still has eight scholarships to give and embarks Thursday on a weeklong recruiting adventure, visited Achiuwa last week.

?Yes, he came down last week and had a very good visit with him,? he said. ?Tony Chiles came out first and Steve came down and he had a good talk with them.

?That?s one of the schools that?s on his radar.?

Nwora, a fellow Nigerian, founded Global Sports Advantage six years ago and now operates various camps in Africa aimed at helping the top players come to the U.S.

Achiuwa has only been here a year but averaged 13.1 points, 13.5 rebounds and two blocks per game as a freshman. He earned third-team all-American honors and helped lead Erie to a 27-2 record.

?I think he?s one of the best power forwards in the country right now,? Nwora said. ?I?ve been in junior college for 12 years. This is my 22nd year in the U.S. Out of all the kids I?ve come across, he?s the one that has a very good chance of getting drafted.

?If he keeps doing what he?s doing, he?s got a good chance of getting looked at by a scout.?

Nwora didn?t rule out that the possibility that Achiuwa could go pro after this year instead of attending college.

?He?s that good,? he said. ?The kid doesn?t stop working. Somebody could come after him to get into the draft.?

As for his unusual name, Nwora said Achiuwa?s Erie teammates don?t give him a hard time.

?He?s one of those kids, he?s serious about the game,? he said. ?He?s serious about his life. He?s very religious so most of his teammates respect him and treat him seriously.?

God's Gift is coming to college hoops

He may even come to your school.

God's Gift Achiuwa, a 6-foot-9 forward at Erie Community College, was a third-team All-America last season after averaging 13.1 points, 13.5 rebounds and two blocks a game as a freshman. As an added bonus, he logged a 4.0 GPA last fall, and a 3.8 this spring.

Sounds like someone's living up to his name.

How'd he get that moniker, anyway? Achiuwa, a native of Nigeria, comes from a religious family. His dad's a minister and thought it was appropriate, writes Jeff Eisenberg over at the Dagger.

"His name is the first thing that anyone asks about when they meet him," Erie coach Alex Nwora told Eisenberg. "Everyone thought it was a nickname or something, but that's his real name. Fortunately, he's a religious kid, so he likes it."

I'm guessing Achiuwa also likes the attention his play - and his name - are garnering. Kansas, Pitt, St. John's and Tennessee all have shown interest, though Nwora says Achiuwa's game still needs a little work. But the possibilities for when he does hit D-I are endless. Adam Zagoria has about four different catchphrases prepped if Achiuwa plays at MSG.

Though I'm hoping Stu Scott doesn't pull the SportsCenter highlights...

God's Gift Achiuwa Star Player For Erie College Basketball

Erie Community College Basketball Is Hoping God's Gift Achiuwa Lives Up To His Name And Maybe Be Better Than God Shammgod

LeBron James maybe King but God's Gift Achiuwa is, well, God's Gift to basketball - at least Division Three basketball in Western New York.
God's Gift Achiuwa, that's right his name is God's Gift Achiuwa (and no, God is not his nickname) is a Nigerian born basketball player for Erie Community College in the NCAA's Western New York Athletic Conference.

The Nigeria native's father is a minister, so the first name he chose for his son is a reflection of the family's devout religious beliefs."His name is the first thing that anyone asks about when they meet him," Erie coach Alex Nwora said by phone. "Everyone thought it was a nickname or something, but that's his real name. Fortunately, he's a religious kid, so he likes it."

God's Gift Achiuwa is a pretty mean basketball player too. God's Gift stands 6 foot 9 and apparently has grabbed the attention of St. John's University.
God?s Gift Achiuwa, a forward on the Erie Community College men?s basketball team, was recognized by the Western New York Athletic Conference as its co-Freshman Athlete of the Year.
Achiuwa previously was named a Third Team All-American by the NJCAA and was Co-Region III Player of the Year after leading Erie to a 27-2 record in 2009-10. He averaged 13 points, 13.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game during his freshman campaign.

By the way, God's Gift Achiuwa is not the first basketball player to have the word "God" in his name. That honor belongs to God Shammgod who played for the Washington Wizards in the 1997-1998 season

Zagoria, July 4, 2010:
Up until this holiday weekend, my favorite college basketball name was Just-in? Love Smith of Siena.

You can?t beat ?Just-in? Love,? can you?

Turns out you can.

My new favorite college basketball name is God?s Gift Achiuwa.

That?s right. His name is God?s Gift and he?s a 6-foot-9 Nigerian forward from Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. He is being recruited by St. John?s, among others.

?Nigeria is a very, very religious country,? said Joe Boncore, who mentors numerous Nigerian players but has no connection to Achiuwa. ?They are devout Catholics. You gotta have religion because where they?re coming from, it?s pretty bad.?

God?s Gift was named a Third Team Division II All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association. He was previously named the Region III co-Player of the Year and helped lead Erie to an all-time best 27-2 record last season. He averaged a double-double of 13 points and 13.4 rebounds, while blocking 2.1 shots per game.

Imagine the possibilities if he landed at St. John?s in the Big East.

?God?s Gift takes the floor at Madison Square Garden.?

?I?m God?s Gift to basketball and I?ll be taking on Villanova and Georgetown this season.?

?There goes God?s Gift, throwing down a dunk on South Florida.?

And we can only hope that one day we will hear David Stern say??And with the 15th pick in the NBA Draft, the New York Knicks select ?God?s Gift.??

Even LeBron can?t promise that.

Is God's Gift to Matta depth in the post? I guess we'll have to wait and see!

I like God's Gift in theory, because he could be that hybrid F/C JC player who's not going to scare off any high profile '12 recruits, but will be gone by the time the '13 class rolls around so TM won't have to worry about a scholarship being devoted to a 4-year project with no return on the investment. Honestly, TM probably could get a '13 recruit who would be more productive as a frosh than many of the '11 HS targets (perhaps all of the uncommitted ones other than Amir) would be as a JR.

I guess we can just call him "Gift".....

Re: Meet God's Gift Achiuwa, a 6-foot-9 forward at Erie Community College who has already caught the attention of some high-profile Division I programs because of both his stellar play and unusual name. The Nigeria native's father is a minister, so the first name he chose for his son is a reflection of the family's devout religious beliefs.

Achiuwa doesn't have a nickname, though his teammates sometimes call him "Gift" for short.

I wouldn't necessarily compare him to Hunter, but his coach saying he has potential to be drafted by the NBA does seem similar to something that Hunter's coach had said about him, although Hillsborough CC typically has a lot better talent coming through it than Erie CC (which is a D-II Juco, the same level that Jeremie Simmons played at - Simmons averaged 16.6 ppg as frosh whereas Gift had 13.1 ppg, 13.5 rb, 2 bpg).

I think this kid is one to watch, but him not wanting to take visits until after xmas makes it less likely OSU gets him IMO.

The young man's dad is a pastor, and when he named his son, it may only be a coincidence, but the origin of the name is an Anglicized form of the Hebrew words for God, "El" and Gift "Matta".
Thad you might mention this--you and El could be family!

God's Gift Achiuwa chooses St. John's
By Kieran Darcy
ESPNNewYork.com

St. John's coach Steve Lavin has to hope his newest recruit is as impressive on the basketball court as his name.

God's Gift Achiuwa -- a 6-foot-8 power forward and first-team juco All-American from Erie (N.Y.) Community College -- is the ninth player to commit to the Red Storm for next season. St. John's has the No. 3-ranked recruiting class, according to ESPN Insider's top 25.

The Nigerian native, whose father is a minister, chose St. John's over Washington and Cincinnati.

"I am excited to come to St. John's and New York City. I really like the coaching staff and the way St. John's plays. They are a running team and that's what I like, fast paced basketball," Achiuwa said. "I also like the winning tradition of the new coaching staff. They came into the St. John's program and turned things around in less than a year. I think that's a good indication that the program is on its way back."
