Thanks Redhawk, I have tried that and installed it and used the old Windows Media Player, but it is still choppy as all hell....I don't know what the heck to do!

How old is your computer? My previous computer would always choke on the HD avi/mkv/etc videos. My newer computer seems to play them fine.

Can you play this video in youtube in HD mode? Follow the link and choose HD 720p or 1080p. If you can't play that (assuming you let it buffer), you may not be able play any true HD file. My work computer can play the 720 but not 1080 version. I doubt it could play the HD mkv files.

Finding a way to covert them to a different format may help. A free one that I use to convert videos for my blackberry is this:

You can use it to convert to avi with different levels of quality. I haven't tried to use it to convert a large HD file, though.

Thanks for the responses Redhawk, my cpu constantly gets upgraded. It's home built, I know hardware, but the software part I'm lost!!! Lol. That youtube vid (awesome by the way!!!) worked fine in 720, a little choppy in 1080. I am going to try to convert the video using the link you provided. Thanks again man, and I'll keep an update...

I downloaded the Rose Bowl in x246 720p HD and tried to play it today...

Here are some steps to follow if you're looking to make it work...

Sounds like something else is interfering with your video playback. I have a C2D 4300 with an Intel 965 video card (mobo integrated), 1gb RAM, and it plays back fine on a 47" LCD screen.

FFDShow: No problem playing back 720p, h264, AC3 files (slight stutter on 1080p)
CoreAVC: No problem playing back 1080p, h264, AC3 files
Zoomplayer as the player, though Media Player Classic works too

Since my computer has less impressive specs than yours, I'm suspecting a software issue.

Here's what I did to get my software the way I wanted it:
--(Uninstall everything related in your case. Use Insurgent from CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack to remove extra stuff) [DO NOT DO IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING]
--Install your DVD player (WMP11 is the only one that truly works for me)
--Install the Combined Community Codec Pack. (My codec pack of choice. Very light.)
--Install CoreAVC [protip: TPB]
--Use Radlight Filter Manager to change PowerDVD h264 to less preferred, FFDshow for normal preferred for h264, and CoreAVC to preferred for h264 (Google to find download)
--Reboot

It's a fairly complex process, but if you want to ensure that you'll be able to play ALL HD MKV files this is what you need to do. Remember that if you've had codec packs installed, unless you manually remove all of those additional codecs with the CCCP Insurgent you will not be able to play MKV files in anything but WMP11.

CCCP Codec pack is okay though, it's mostly a filter package.

The most important step here is installing CoreAVC, find it & get it, install it and use WMP11. Most PCs with dual core should be able to handle anything up to 720p with most video cards. You may need a heftier PC/Card to deal with anything up to 1080p, but with these steps most folks shouldn't have issues.
