'10 OH OL Matt James (Notre Dame Signee - RIP)

James is very close to Massa, not the walk-on. There was a talk of Massa and James being a package deal to UC. While I don't think that's up high on James' list, it sure didn't hurt when coupled with Kelly's departure to ND. It just added another plus in ND's favor. I personally think ND will be the pick, but that's just an educated guess.

That is debatable. But I do agree I don't see this as an uphill battle, but just that Massa made it real close.

First hand knowledge that what Block-O posted should not be up for debate. Back to Mr. James.

15. Matt James will continue the trend of Notre Dame landing top talent from Midwest Catholic schools; he'll join teammate Luke Massa, and fellow Cincinnati Catholic school stars Andrew Hendrix and Alex Welch.

Also in the mix for Kelly is Offensive lineman Matt James from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, the same school as recent Irish get , quarterback Luke Massa. James will pick from Ohio State and Notre Dame and will announce his choice Wednesday. He visited Notre Dame this past weekend.

The headline from IrishCentral.com makes it sound as if BK is commenting on a specific current recruit. Isn't that a recruiting faux pas? Punishable by death?

I had said the same thing when the article was posted in the Henderson thread.

Having looked a little closer though, I be no such statement by Kelly ever took place. IrishCentral isn't a Notre Dame website, it's a website for Irish people. They probably have no connection to what's going on right now with ND recruiting. They're just telling their readers what they want to hear.

A couple of things about the "Massa Effect"...

St. X usually sends 40-50 kids to Ohio State every matriculation year.

St. X also usually sends 10-15 kids to Notre Dame every matriculation year.

Therefore, I find it a bit presumptuous to assume that Massa going to Notre Dame would have much bearing on James's decision, regardless of their friendship. On the other hand, it's very easy to assume that James has, at the very least, 1 or 2 friends going to Ohio State that he's at least as good friends with as Massa. I would bet that the number is a lot higher than 1 or 2 in fact. Also, the fact that there are a number of St. X kids that go to Notre Dame also helps relieve some of the uncertainty of going away to Notre Dame. Massa's presence may not be significant if James has a familiarity and/or friendship with a number of Notre Dame incoming freshman from St. X.

James is not heading to Cal where he would literally only know fellow football players. Massa's presence would be a huge factor in such a situation (ala the now defunct Grimes and Murphy deal to Michigan). He's heading to Notre Dame or Ohio State. He's not exactly stepping out into the realms of the unknown here.

Just my two cents.

You mean kids other than football players might be friends with James and might be headed to OSU or ND and regardless of such probably won't have that great of an impact on his decision, just like Massa's won't, because in the end he will do what is best for himself and his family?

Brilliant post, emu...greenies for you.
