Sam Webb: Recruiting

One of the best high school football games in Michigan last season took place during the first week of the state playoffs. Detroit Cass Tech and its triumvirate of Michigan-bound athletes took on seemingly overmatched Warren Mott.

The Technicians had the name recognition and the prospects with scholarship offers, but those things mattered little once the teams took the field. The underdog Marauders gave their favored foes more of a game than anyone anticipated before eventually falling 27-24. By the time the dust settled, though, Mott DE/TE C.J. Olaniyan had earned a little name recognition of his own.

By Wallace...favors Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State and Kentucky (all offered except OSU). His coach thinks OSU may offer once they see him in person this weekend.

This kid is starting to really put together a nice offer list from schools that know defensive line talent such as LSU (interest) and PSU (offer). Will be interesting to see how our interest goes once we see him in person.

Warren Mott's C.J. Olaniyan close to setting top-5 list
Sam Webb / Special to The Detroit News

The biggest recruiting enigma in Michigan might be Warren Mott defensive end C.J. Olaniyan. A fiery and explosive talent on the football field, Olaniyan is soft spoken and reserved off of it.

Those traits have made keeping his recruiting leanings close to the vest fairly easy, but sometime in the next month or two he plans to clue everyone in on which schools are the favorites for his services.

Warren Mott coach Tom Milanov has been instrumental in helping his star pupil bring his recruitment into greater focus by shepherding him across the Midwest to as many schools as possible. Along the way the Marauders' coach offered sage advice on how and when the youngster should go about trimming down his list.

"He's been telling me to look at my options," Olaniyan said about his coach. "He finds questions for me to ask about each school that I like. In August or September we'll break it down for a top five."

Olaniyan currently has more than 20 scholarship offers and has already visited Penn State, Kentucky, Iowa, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State.
