ouglass' Smith has matured at the checkerboardAs told to Michael Carvell
Douglass High School?s Garrison Smith, ranked as the nation?s No. 2 prospect at defensive tackle, doesn?t like to lose.

Garrison Smith (left) picks up wisdom from his 83-year-old neighbor Jon Brown. But Smith is no match for him in checkers.
So Smith laughs when he talks about his winless streak in checkers against his elderly neighbor, Jon Brown.
Brown, 83, has become like ?second family? for Smith, who spends several days a week across the street. It provides an escape of sorts from a big decision Smith is facing ? he has more than 50 scholarship offers.
I?ve been going over to Mr. Brown?s since we moved to the neighborhood. He and his wife are real nice. They are the type of people that when you meet them you instantly feel their loving spirit.
My brothers and I always used to play checkers against each other, and one day Mr. Brown saw us playing and said that maybe he could teach me a couple of things. Not knowing how good he was, I went over there expecting a few easy wins. But he turned out to be the greatest checkers player of all-time. It has been 13 years, and my brothers and I have never beat him once.
He is just a master at checkers. He studies his craft and works at it. You can?t beat the master, I guess. I can beat everybody else, but I can?t beat him.
Anytime I have free time, I like to go over there. They welcome me like they would their own child, always asking if I want something to drink or eat. Mr. Brown always wants to have fun and compete.
We sit in his den and will play checkers for hours. When I finally get tired of getting beat, I break out the cards and play this game called ?Tonk.? I can beat him every now and then in cards. One time I got out to a 10-0 lead and was teasing him about it. Then the next time we played he won 11 straight. He has just got the luck of the games. He wins everything.
Smith: I'm 'Georgia-bound'
By Marc Weiszer | [email protected] | Story updated at 11:18 pm on 7/18/2009
One of the state's top football prospects appears to be headed to Georgia.
Defensive tackle Garrison Smith from Atlanta's Douglass High might have upstaged tonight's scheduled announcement of his college choice when a recorded video of Smith revealing his decision was already posted on Rivals.com.
"Georgia-bound," Smith said while wearing a red Georgia cap. "It's a great place. I love the state. There are a lot of great people here, a lot of great fans, a lot of great coaches and I've got a lot of loving family that I love and cherish, and I know they want to see me play."
The 6-foot-31/2, 260-pound Smith is from the same school as current Georgia defensive end Rod Battle and linebacker Akeem Dent.
Smith will become Georgia's 16th commitment for the 2010 class.
"I guess that's what he's going to do, but I don't want to say because I don't know definitely," Douglass coach Kenneth Barrow said Saturday.

UGA 5-star commitment Garrison Smith talks Bama visit
October 27, 2009, by Chip Towers
The text messages started hitting Garrison Smith?s phone while he was still in Tuscaloosa on the Alabama campus.
?Are you really at Alabama?? he was asked. ?Are you there on a visit??
The answers were ?yes? and ?yes.? But the five-star defensive tackle from Douglass High, one of the prize commitments in Georgia?s 2010 class, assured one and all that the Bulldogs have nothing to worry about.
Smith went on to explain that while he did attend the Alabama-Tennessee game as a guest of the Crimson Tide, he was there mainly to support former Douglass teammate Jonathan Atchison, a freshman linebacker at Alabama.
I?ll let Smith explain:
?I was free this weekend,? he said. ?I didn?t have a game on Saturday. So I had been talking to John and he?d been telling me to come down. He told me his family was coming down to see the game and spend a weekend with him and I should come. I told him it wasn?t problem, it was cool. So they told me I could ride with them and get away for the weekend. I decided to go down, hang out with them and have some fun.?
So Smith and a Douglass teammate rode over with four members of the Atchison family and picked up two complimentary tickets as Alabama?s guests. Of course, that meant that Smith was given the full-on recruit treatment at the game.
?Yeah, I talked to pretty much everybody while I was there,? the 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive tackle said. ?Nothing major. They understand. They said they respect that I?m committed but they still want me to take a look. They showed good sportsmanship.?
So, to be sure, I asked Smith if the Bulldogs have anything to worry about?
?No,? he said. ?I?m still committed to Georgia.?
Georgia fans are a bit paranoid of late. With the Bulldogs struggling this season and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez drawing increased scrutiny, some recruits are starting to waver on their commitments.
